New Act - new vertical thumbnail! This is the image thatāll appear if Rose Tide Rising is ever lucky enough to be promoted in Webtoons āCanvasā tab! The above is the āNormalā version, and below 2 are versions with manipulated colour to make the protagonists pop more. Which do you think I should use?
Directors Daniel Kwan and Scheinert spoke to Salon about their bold new film that embraces the profound and profane
Shut up I'm not crying. Also behold the rewards of research and sensitivity!! That's practically a fable - like the lion decided out of true generosity of spirit to research mice and discovered it actually WAS a mouse and that was why being a lion was so goddamn difficult ... the analogy needs work but you get it. Anyway go and see Everything Everywhere All At Once. People said it was what ADHD feels like and going in I was like "if it gives normal people ADHD glasses then how will I, an ADHD person, even be able to distinguish that" ... and then there were scenes like "The protagonist is having an extremely fraught conversation about her taxes. She is simultaneously, in another reality having a very fraught conversation about saving the universe. In both, she is scolded for not paying enough attention although in one her interlocutor should KNOW exactly why this is difficult." And the line "I never know what is going on but I have a feeling it's my fault!" ... and I was all OK yes this is in fact what ADHD feels like.
I donāt know! Weāll see what the next movie makes me realize about myself. Itās kind of- Itās, I donāt know. Iām so lucky I get to work out this trauma and stuff like that on the big screen. Itās bizarre! But Iām glad you connected with it all.
Daniel Kwan, Co-Director of Everything Everywhere All At Once (2022) | Everything Everywhere All At Once World Premiere Q&A from SXSW 2022
everything everywhere all at once is about intergenerational trauma. about depression and passive suicidality and the gravitational appeal of nothingness. about aging, getting older in your twenties and getting older in your fifties. about the specific hurt mothers can cause their daughters and daughters their mothers. about the harsh reality of the immigrant experience and the american dream. but itās mostly about kindness and family and itās about choosing to sit at home talking about taxes with someone who loves you, and itās about telling your daughter that youād choose her over the entire universe, and itās about how even in the universes where life didnāt form, love can still exist. and itās really all of that at once.
[IMAGE ID: A tweet by āminh tĆ¢m h. š¾ on concreteā @HAEDRAULICS on Apr 20: āeverything everywhere all at once had me writing down english class notes in the theatreā with two drawings of sets of two nested circles, one black with a white center, one white with a black center. They are respectively labeled, āthe bagel (yin) // -life is mostly dull and bad // -joy is fleeting and ultimately meaninglessā and, āthe googly eye (yang) // -life is mostly good and worthwhile // suffering is transient and fixableā END ID]
When a story goes yes life and the universe is fundimentally chaotic, uncaring, and meaningless in nature... but have you considered love? And hope? THAT'S when it gets me
this is my takeaway from Everything Everywhere All At Once
