“What I say about being happy is that I am ‘also happy.’ I’m happy among other things. Happy is one of the many feelings or experiences that I will have throughout a day. I think happy has been sort of made into this Hallmark card of a word, and I don’t know what that means. So I will just say that I enjoy my life, I make choices, I do what I want to do. I am a strong person, I’m not afraid of almost anything, and that’s a lot because of your example.”

Drawing The Line On Our Children’s Free Will
Satirical post
A trend in our society that we need to sort out is all the kids out there wasting their lives trying to be doctors. It’s one thing for them to play doctor when they are younger but as they grow older they should realize how poorly their lives will turn out if they become doctors. Just think of how many people actually become doctors, yet alone successful ones. The odds just aren't in their favour so why even try? Why go to school for more than ten years just to get a medical degree? What are you going to use that for when you are trying to find a real job?
If by some miracle they do become a successful doctors, is that really the lifestyle we want for our kids? Having to be at the beck and call of all those patients at all hours of the day, do they ever get any alone time? Just think of all the pressure doctors are under to perform well. This “career” is just too stressful for our children and they just don't understand that. They are so unaware of the awful choice they are making for their lives ... no matter how much we tell them.
It’s our job as parents to steer our kids in the right direction, and I believe that direction is far away from being a doctor. Period. Come to think of it, is any degree in the Sciences really worth it? Do we want our children to become snooty nerds or do we want them doing something worthwhile with their lives - like the Arts?

New York, New York, It’s A Helluva Town!
Travel articular
What’s the dream of a theatre kid in New York? Going to see an opera at the Metropolitan Opera House. What’s the nightmare of a theatre kid with vertigo? Being on the fifth balcony of said opera house. About two years ago this is where I found myself. Just as soon as I got to my seat, panic set in and I was quickly escorted by my friend to the closest usher to find a different place to sit. The next man I talked to, an all-business New Yorker that never looked up from his laptop at all during our conversation, gave me a new ticket and sent me on my way to - hopefully - enjoy the performance. I walked to my seat and that's when I noticed … not only did they move me to the ground floor, but to the seventh row from the stage. Let’s just say it was an amazing way to start a trip to New York City!
Now what is it that people think of when they think of the Big Apple? Well according to my friends it's not Broadway like I thought, but instead, street food. Or at least that's how they came across when all they wanted to do was look for a cheap hot dog instead of scour theatres for extra Playbills like I suggested. In their defense, the hot dogs were delicious and, for what they were, very reasonably priced.
Though I could go on about how great New York is for much more than 300 words, I’ll just leave it at this: New York is a fabulous place to visit packed full with things to do. You could go see the Empire State Building, or if you are like me and prefer to stay on the ground, perhaps a stroll through Central Park. Either way, whether you are looking to see rapping founding fathers on Broadway or just want a really good street pretzel, there is something in that city for everyone.

The Triumph of Mischief, Kent Monkman
Unsettlingly clear air covered the area, as if the environment had been preserved in pure crystal which gleamed in the light of the mid afternoon sun. The atmosphere was an eery still, in contrast with the action all around. Everything came together in weird but unusually satisfying pairings. The fresh smell of pine combined with the rusty scent of blood, leaving its sickly sweet aroma in every crack. Low muffled moans of war and the soft chirping of birds battled for dominance in a deadly tango of sound. They went back and forth, a perfect balance of calm and aggression.
The thump of hoofed feet landing was accompanied by the clank of weapons and the agonizing screams of defeat coming from a creature that was not quite human. The rusty scent never left the air, so thick one could almost taste it, yet by some sort of magic the ground remained a brilliant shade of emerald instead of the cynical shade of crimson that would seem to suit the battle taking place on the cool grass.
There was a very fine line between peace and war in this forest. One moment it appeared that the chaos of stomping feet and angry voices would win and the world would be swept into a hellish state of endless violence. Yet a minute later, the scale would tip and a serene cloak would fall over the valley. But it would never last, it would always return to its deadly dance between chaos and harmony.
Your past self and future self might be thinking about you right now, either positively or negatively.
Milkshakes and poodle skirts
“Write a scene in which an important conversation unfolds over the consumption of a particular beverage”
“Two milkshakes please.”
“Actually, one is okay.”
Jillian looked up at her friend, “Don’t you want one?”
“Don’t have enough money. I’ll just steal some of yours,” she stated with a wink. Jillian shot Angie a look then turned back to the cashier. “Two please. I’ll pay for hers.” An awkwardness fell between them as they waited for their milkshakes. A few minutes later the girls grabbed the drinks and headed to one of the booths at the back of the joint. Once they sat down, Angie was the first to break the silence.
“Why did you buy mine? We could have just shared.”
Jillian gave her another agitated look, “You know perfectly well why we couldn’t share.”
“Oh God not this again,” Angie exclaimed as she leaned back into the shiny vinyl backing of the booth. “Girls share milkshakes all the time, no one will think anything of it.”
“Yes, but we aren’t just ‘two girls’, we need to be careful.” Jillian looked down and started picking at her perfectly manicured nails. They had had this discussion before, but before Jillian could over think it, Angie grabbed her hand under the table.
“But we also need to live sometimes Jill. I know you’re scared, I am too, but… don’t you think it’s worth it?” Angie looked her, eyes full of worry. Not of what was going on between them, but of the possibility that it would end.
“Angie…” Jillian was barely speaking above a whisper at this point, “I love you.” Tears were now filling Angie’s eyes, “I love you too.” she choked out. She wanted to jump across the table and embrace Jillian but she knew she couldn’t. Not in a place this public.
Angie wiped her eyes and reached for her milkshake, “Cheers to us, and screw anyone who says different!”
Jillian blushed at her friend’s outburst but still giggled as she reached for her own milkshake. She took a sip and looked at the beautiful girl sitting across from her and smiled to herself, for once not worrying if someone noticed.

Libraries are no place for conversation
“Write a dialogue scene between two very different individuals”
“Can you believe how fucking stupid this place is?”
Ken looked up, annoyed to be interrupted by the sudden outburst. He looked around noticing a girl talking into her phone.
“I can’t believe my stupid step-mom made me come here. It’s filled with old nerds,” the girl said, still talking into her phone.
Ken made his way to the girl, “Would you mind keeping it down? Some of us are trying to read.” The girl looked at Ken giving him a look that made him regret ever coming over to say something.
“Speaking of old nerds, I have to go.” she said before putting her phone down on the table and shifting her attention to the man that was standing in front of her.
“Who the fuck are you?” she said with a tone of annoyance and disinterest.
“Excuse me, such language is not necessary. I was merely hoping you could speak a little more quietly.” Ken was very much regretting coming over to talk to the girl.
“Listen, you’re like sixty so this is harassment. Why don’t you fuck off and leave me alone.”
Ken, dumbfounded, just stared at the girl.
“And yet you are still here…” Just then her phone lit up and started buzzing as the ID of whoever was calling her came up on the screen. Brian Campbell. Wait a minute, I know that man Ken thought. At this Ken stood up a little straighter and stopped fiddling with his wedding ring.
“Alex.” He said in a much harsher tone than he was using earlier, “It is not appropriate to make light of such serious allegations and unless you want your father to hear about this I suggest you apologize and remain quiet while you are in this library.”
“How… how the fuck do you know my name?”
“My husband works with your father, and while you’re at it, why don’t you watch your language as well.”
Ken returned to his seat, leaving an awestruck Alex embarrassingly looking at her hands. He quietly sat down and continued reading his book.
“Who can say if I’ve been changed for the better? But because I knew you I have been changed for good…”
