Icons can be categorized into language, science and communication as well. Symbols are used to represent concepts, ideas, and philosophies, while icons can represent those same things but and more.

Summary
In chapter 4 it discusses different types of visual persuasion. The first form of visual persuasion this chapter discusses is the concept of shock advertising. Shock advertising is used to shock potential customers and get their attention. However shock advertising can be a risky marketing strategy. It can be considered a risky strategy because it can occasionally backfire on the company. For example, when Benetton did an advertisement with prisoners on death row there where tons of backlash from families that were affected by those prisoners. This ended up hurting the company when they had to pay a $50,000 dollar fine to those victims. The second type of visual persuasion this chapter discusses is propaganda. According to the book propaganda is thought of as the duping of an unsuspecting public through misleading or false information. Propaganda is mostly seen in political ads, trying to persuade the reader to do something. An example of propaganda from the book is the picture of Uncle Sam pointing at you and saying I want YOU for U.S. army.

This link helped me in better understanding the different theories discussed in this chapter. I found that the examples used in this link where all excellent representations of the different types of theories. It was also nice because there was not much text, and the text that was there was concise and to the point.
Chapter 2
“Color is a highly subjective and powerful means of communicating ideas”
This quote from the text book is a great example of how just one attribute of an image can completely change the meaning and feel some one has when looking at it. An example of this would be how if you looked at an image with not many bright colors the feeling you might get from that image could be sad, lonely, or depressed. This doesn't mean that all dark colors are associated with these feelings, but usually images that are meant to be depressing, or sad tend to have darker colors in them.
