I love this unicorn tapestry so so so much. Why is he so chill. He’s a captive . Escape. Be free my son. I love the idea that mythical and otherworldly celestial special animals like unicorns have to follow special unspoken laws. They used to hunt unicorns by baiting them out into the open with a virgin, they were creatures of such purity they would only appear to those who were also pure, it’s a fun recapitulation of the idealized association of purity of Christ and the Virgin Mary.

I am kind of upset these animals never really were real. They were always so real to me….

Its about holding something pure and beautiful hostage for appreciation of that purity or for desire to preserve it but in doing so its quality is diminished. The restraint of the fence traps the unicorn; it is no longer a part of the fantastical wild it appears from so rarely, but simply a novelty for greedy eyes. We don’t deserve to see the unicorn at all. We are not pure we are not perfect and we do not belong to the unicorns world anymore than it belongs in ours.

“The Dark Tower” cyanotype print on watercolor canvas board, based on my own photography of Le Torri d’Orlando in Capranica, Italy. Original photo shot with a Nikon A8008 on fujifilm 400.

According to local legend, this tower was defended by the mythical Carolingian paladin Orlando, also known as Roland. This piece of folklore fits quite nicely into the ever-growing literary tradition that has sprung from the Song of Roland, including Robert Browning’s iconic poem, and more recently Stephen King’s popular fantasy series.

Angel's Egg x MIKIOSAKABE 40th Anniversary Collection

This collection and shoot are stunning. One of the most striking aspects of Amano's character designs for Angel's Egg is the enveloping and layered fabrics that provide a scant sense of warmth and brief color in the murky dilapidated world they inhabit.

Oversized styling emphasizes the childhood of the protagonist and the threadbare world she lives in. Billowing silhouettes are maintained to complement the wispy flow of long white hair on ominous winds against dark backdrops. And the stylist even kept her little side braid, such great attention to detail!

Ironically, the lack of footwear for the protagonist of the film is remedied by a wide selection here. I especially love these mary janes; worn down to the implication of being pulled from the ashes of the dark city, like much of the girl's wardrobe, but with bubbly soles that evoke the prevalent liquid imagery of the film.

All of the 40th anniversary events and releases have been such a treat for Angel's Egg fans and this collection was such a fun surprise! A very nice tribute that honors the masterful visual direction of the original film.

It’s crazy that Catelyn Stark who had the most consistently great chapters of any POV character in the first 3 books is so hated. Her storyline never gets boring and her characterization is so strong. I will NEVER understand the Catelyn hate that’s my #goat!!!!!
