dynamodynamite:
The more he thought of escape, the more complications Nonary came across. The construction of the EMP would indeed be the largest one utilized in history- and the first to be used in a metropolis like area. Such an EMP could completely such down the entire city. Even it’s creation would be a complete scientific feat never accomplished before. A definitely tempting thing to consider when they were all out of here, but for sure they would lack all and any of the complex wiring needed to create it. Nonetheless, it was now out of consideration. Which meant that another medium needed to be found to take down the force field. The first thought would be simply destroying the machine (or person, he noted) projecting it in the first place! Given that though, there’s no solid evidence either are in the tower to begin with. The mastermind had to use Dash, their adorable fluffy messenger in order to even reach them. Though it would be some ridiculously interesting tech, such advanced long range projection of a barrier would be impressively hard to just create. Unless… A dreadful thought crossed into his mind. Sure, they were all at the gala last according to memory. But there’s no way someone wouldn’t have come to save them already. Whether it be the police or other heroes, someone had an interest in seeing everyone free.
What if Valentine had… Sent forces already? The new wave of tech they had been ready to prototype was ahead of scheduled development since he didn’t take hours off… What if somehow, the mastermind behind this managed to access important NPAR technology to trap them in? A horrible irony, the man who developed such marvels and feats to be hopelessly imprisoned by the same thing? Well, he went on a bit of a tangent on that note. There wasn’t any proof help had been sent nor that anything was stolen from him. But the more concerning thought was exactly what had occurred on the outside world given their absence. Criminals had to have taken the opportunity and capitalized on this, right? How many people had gotten hurt already? How much time had been passed since their unfortunate sleep to their unfortunate awakening? Realistically, there was no for certain way to measure that. A lot was suddenly at stake in this situation. Whoever concocted this scheme was either very powerful, very smart, or very stupid. He considered that it might as well be all three. He could sense the trouble in the air.
“More than what we think is at stake here, don’t you think so too? It’s bigger than just the sixteen of us. Ah geez, today was not the day for a moral dilemma!” He grumbles, pacing around Suga for a while. “Guwuaaaaghhhhhh, I’ll figure something out later! I don’t feel like making a big web chart of conspiracy theories right now!”
Oh right, his job! The same job he was fretting about. Asking of his boss, though? Mmm, he had to think of what to say here. Not too deeply, of course, but he couldn’t go willy nilly about her or he’d get a scolding.
“Valentiney’s a nickname. Her full name is Valentina Dragovich. She’s a bit older than me- Harvard Graduate, top of her class. I still think she used her power to see answers in school ahead of time, but insists she’s not that skeevy. And yeah, she can see into the future. She’s the reason I got my job! You could say I owe her, but by now, I think she’s more indebted to me! Kinda stuck up, but I guess she has to be professional and business like. And she typically keeps me from getting too rowdy.”
What was there to say about Valentina? She was to him, in all means of a word, the closest he had gotten to really having a friend. Sure, they didn’t hang out (he didn’t do that with anyone), but he was interested in her well being. Sometimes he even dropped off some soda at her desk with his reports. And she would tiredly comment ‘Knew you’d come through’, and he’d laugh because she actually did know. Not really the kind of person he’d care to interact any further with for multiple reasons, though. But she was a fair employer, so he was a fair employee. Yet, what is this. Is Suga… questioning him? What a joy! He always loved a good interview now and then! All of the cameras and the people watching at home, even the cliched ‘Hi, mom!’ act was all amusing to him. There was nothing wrong with basking in the limelight a bit! That’s at least, what he thought. But if things got too personal? Ah, well he could waltz around a question like no other!
“Never went to university! Don’t even have an undergrad! Started working when I was twenty one, as plain as that! A lot can simply be achieved by ingenuity and motivation. Though a bit of luck never hurts. Been this smart as far as I can remember, really. But I don’t have the best recollection, so who says I even know what I’m talking about, kuhuhu! Still never went to college. I am indeed, pretty smart though!
This was the equivalent of Nonary’s first big vacation. He should enjoy this as much as he could, really. Even during the threat of murder and the heavy atmosphere, this could be worked around. Maybe he’d have a margarita or something! Get a little loopy! Get wild! Eh, do something, anyways.
“So, I get to not leak government secrets to a waiter at a fancy restaurant who thinks I’m cool, and the benefit of this is some hot chocolate? Well, so long as nothing you ask overstays it’s welcome, I’d be happy to answer you anything your heart desires! Again, no government secrets. Let’s start with some rapid fire questions! The eye? Happened long time ago. Yes, it is real and not robotic, and no, I do not have super sight! Age? Twenty four. Accent? Indeed from good old England! Moved here three years ago. Chocolate or vanilla? Chocolate vanilla swirl, no need to be close minded!”
As opposed to Nonary, Suga’s mind worked in a much more linear fashion. Once he was finished with a topic, he put it aside completely and focused only on the task right in front of him until something from a different train of thought was needed. Conspiracies, outside of TV shows and comics, were not something that came easy to him when it wasn’t put right in front of him. Maybe that was one of the reasons he found the NPAR such a frustrating (if still interesting) subject to think about. That, among others. But he had no doubt that it was only a matter of time before he had them figured out. He was absolutely sure that they couldn’t be THAT great.
Filing the name Valentina Dragovich under new info on it was another step closer, and he had no doubt that whether Nonary knew it or not he’d spill enough or Suga to draw his own conclusions about what was REALLY going on in that shady organization of his. But for now, the NPAR was really of secondary interest. He had to focus first on how to get out, and for that he’d have need of information on Nonary as a person, less on whatever the NPAR was up to. Maybe as a side project. But not as his main focus. So he really did not mourn Nonary’s strict rules on leaking government secrets. Whatever. He had no need for those, and if he did he could still figure them out on his own. Like that was hard, right?
What really soured his mood and made even his airheaded smile waver a bit for a moment of stinging coldness was the info Nonary had already given him so freely. He should be thankful for it, really, but he was rarely thankful for anything, and though it was practical to not have to ask all those things he definitely was going to ask anymore, the sting of definite bitterness happened right when he started his usual ramblings of useful info and filler words that Suga was, by now, getting used to.
Never went to university, huh? Not even an undergrad. Just a good old fashioned genius, hm? It was like biting down on a lemon slice. Of course there was always the possibility of him lying, but… why? No, Suga would like to believe that, but it sure did look like.... he and Nonary had the same level of education. Pf. Well. Couldn’t all be…. Eccentric scientist types with…. With implants in their face and fancy eyes and hair that was probably just NATURALLY fluffy. He bet he’d just gotten lucky. Yeah. Who would even deal with him when they could probably hire anyone they pleased? Actually, who would…?
With that question in mind, he was back in the game, and gave a small chuckle at Nonary’s completely unnecessary comment on chocolate whatever. Lord, this guy. But better keep being empty headed and fun. It was almost like they were playing the same game, but OBVIOUSLY on different levels.
“You’re such a funny guy, Nonary!”
He thought that was what he was trying to get at anyway. Sort of an affable type, right?
“But like, really young?? And you’re sure you’ve never been to university or anything?? Wooow, like, how come they let you work for them then? You must be like really impressive, right?”
After a moment of consideration, Suga did something that was, in his book, a pretty bold move- he reached out and put a hand on Nonary’s arm. Softly, not really doing anything but suggesting a direction to take, in this case the kitchen, where he so helpfully also motioned with his other hand.
“Oh my god I’m sooo sorry? It’s super awkward just standing here don’t you think? Like, I have so many questions for you, and you have like a huge headache don’t you? You should probably sit down, right?”
If it was left up to him, he’d keep this guy locked down in an interview as long as it would take to squeeze every last bit of information from him. He certainly seemed to be ready to answer some questions.
