i'm still thinking through this but like guys i really think we have to stop the running bit that started online in the 2000s about hating people or how exhausting other people are and how terrible social events are. because. it becomes true. i know SO many people in their late 20s/early 30s who joke around about this stuff and then never follow through with plans and leave parties early to go be at home alone with their partners and like not to be dramatic but i really think that the quirky misanthropic introvert personality going mainstream has eroded our ability to make and maintain community...

i'm saying this as someone who NEEDS alone time and who finds first dates genuinely excruciating and second guesses everything i say at a social event and who spent the first 5 years of my post-college adulthood doing a really amazingly good job at never having an uncomfortable social experience and you know where that got me? living alone, hermetically sealed into a friendless bubble right as covid isolation hit. and now that i've been consistently trying for 2 straight years to make friends by meeting new people and having social interactions with people i don't know, i see the same shit that i did to people for 5 years reflected back to me EVERYWHERE. (i've accepted that i am working through a karmic debt.)

like sometimes you have to be pushy. sometimes you have to keep following up with people. and like it's not funny or cool or ironic but you HAVE to admit to yourself AND say OUT LOUD how much you need community, you need other people (BESIDES YOUR PARTNER!!!!) and how much you (brace yourselves) actually LIKE OTHER PEOPLE. you don't have to like everyone. some or many social interactions can be draining. but you do like people. you do. and if you genuinely don't like a single party you've been to in adulthood you need different friends and different parties. sorry.

everyone. it's excruciating sometimes. your high school buttons get pushed. things go weird or go badly. you will go home and cry. but the opportunity for a genuinely loving and supportive community is too important not to risk it. not to be 100 years old about it but we have to start talking to each other again and admit that parties with our friends are fun, for the love of god.
