Production stages in the making of a motion picture
Question One: Provide explanations for the following media industry production stages
Development:
this is where the project produces selects a story that can come form different sources or original idea, once the underlining message or idea has been identified the producer works with writes to create a outline script, once done the produce a treatment a 25-30 page booklet out lining the mood and characters of the story, this hold little dialog and stage direction but more so drawings for a visual understanding. The next screenwriters take around seven months to make a screenplay this can be re-worked many times to improve dramatization, clarity, structure, characters, dialogue, and overall style.A film distributor is sometimes contacted at an early stage to work out the likely market and potential financial success of the film.
both producers and screenwriters get together and make a film pitch/ treatment, and present it to possible financiers at this stages its also pitched to possible actors and if this goes well then the film gets the green light to go ahead meaning someone offers a financial backing most of the time this is a major film studio, film council, or independent investor
Pre-Production:
the script is broken down into individual scenes storyboards and all the locations, props, cast members, costumes, special effects and visual effects are identified. a Largely detailed timeline is produced and arrangements are made so what is needed available to the film-makers, sets are made, crew is hired, financial arrangements are put in place for the making of the film. At some point while in pre-production it’s normal to have a read-through of the script with all cast members with speaking parts, director, all heads of departments, financiers, producers, and publicists.
Production:
The Video/Film is created, extra crew will be recruited at this stage, such as the property master, script supervisor, assistant directors, stills photographer, picture editor, and sound editors.
Post-production:
This is where the video/film is assembled by the video/film editor. All the material is edited, production sound (dialogue) is edited this includes music tracks and songs that are composed and recorded if a film is sought to have a score, sound effects made and recorded all computer-graphic visual effects are digitally added, all sound elements are mixed into “stems”,
Distribution:
this is where the film is released to cinemas and sometimes directly to consumer media (DVD, VCD, VHS, Blu-ray) or direct download from a digital media provider. Film distributors usually release a film with a launch party, a red-carpet premiere, press releases, interviews with the press, press preview screenings, and film festival screenings.
Question 2a: Provide definitions & brief descriptions for 8 of the following media industry production roles:
Best Boy:
this role if the chief assistant to the gaffer, this role isn’t normal on set, but deals with the electric truck, rentals, manpower, and other logistics.
Key Grip:
The chief grip on a set, and is the head of the set operations department also works with the director of photography to help set up the set and to achieve correct lighting and blocking.
Key Scenic Artist:
under the supervision of the paint coordinator and must adhere to the design specifications as set forth by the production designer and art director also supervise a crew of painters delegated to applying special paint treatments.
Boom Operator:
an assistant of the production sound mixer
Costume Standby:
present on set at all times, responsibility to monitor the quality and continuity of the actors and actresses costumes before and during takes”
Squib:
Generally squibs are wired or connected to a remote control and discharged at the appropriate time by the special effects crew. Squibs create the illusion of gunshot wounds, drywall bullet hits and even massive head wounds.
Scene Chewing:
A common term for a scene where an actor’s acting hard that they’re picking bits of scenery out of their teeth for days,Sometimes scenes can actually require this, often the actor or director just has the character go over the top.
Room Tone:
In filmmaking and television production presence (or room tone) is the “silence” recorded at a location or space when no dialogue is spoken. This term is often confused with ambience. Every location has a distinct presence created by the position of the microphone in relation to the space boundaries.
Question 2b: explain what ADR stands for and how it works.
Automated dialogue replacement (ADR) is a process of re-recording dialogue by the original actor after the filming process has been done to improve audio quality or reflect dialogue changes (also known as “looping” or a “looping session”). it works by giving an actor a scene they have acted and the go into a recoding studio to re-record dialog to place more emotion or get the right pic of tone of voice and it is then places over the visible scene, this is also know a lip sinking

With comparing the novel to the film, in both versions of Psycho there appears to be a number of similarities. Norman Bates running the motel that started to go under once the highway was relocated is the same and is the reasons as to why there are never many guest anymore is the same, when the first victim, Mary in the book and Marion in the movie impassively steals $400,000 from a client at the business she works for and other similarities is when detective Arbogst meets Mr.Bates and questions him if Mary pasted by and after questioning him he asked about being able to talk to Mrs.Bates and when Norman refuses it sparks Arbogsts Suspicions and he makes a phone call to Sam, Mary’s boyfriend and lila Mary’s sister to say he is going up to the house to question the mother, where he is killed by the same figure as Mary

Read the Section, “Allusions” and follow the Ed Gein Link. Explain the similarities between the real Edward Gein and the fiction al Norman Bates
Ed Gein was an American killer and body snatcher, he was found guilty but also legal insane. as a young child his mother took advantage of living on a isolated farm and turned away anyone that came near and even punished Gein for trying to make friends at a young age, this can relate to Norman Bate as the fictional characters mother was very controlling of her son when she was alive. Ed’s brother was seemingly worried of Ed affections to their mother and Henry often spoke ill of her to was Ed would respond hurt and socked this suggesting a more then family love Ed had towards his mother of like in the film Bates was found to be in love with his mother and this being the reason after the murder of his mother and her new lover of what was committed by Bates he took on the mind and personality of the mother of what created this “Psycho” and “she” killed any one that came close to Norman just like Gein was punished for socialising and making friends

Edward and norman both seem to have never of been about to grow out of the stage as to where they fall in love with their mothers and become inflamed when the can’t live up to the mothers stands or are able to please her sexual like the father or other male in the mothers lives and Edward Gein took this aggression out on killing other woman and did this best to possibly even be a woman and the only way to the that was to take their skin
Question 4a: Explain how the Title and Credits sequence (up to when we first see the city of Phoenix), uses visual design elements, sound and film stock choice to represent Norman’s split personality.
the opening scene in the movie uses visual design with the use of black and grey and the lines going vertical and diagonal it is a representation of Norman Bate’s spilt personality, the sound of the music is a representation of this as well and along with the slashing of the knife in the famous shower seen

A title designer is designer of the movie title in which title of a movie is displayed on screen is widely considered an art form. It’s often been classified as motion graphics, title design, title sequences and animated credits.

Question 5a: Bernard Herrmann was commissioned by Hitchcock to compose the music for Psycho. Is this media production role listed under Sound Department, Music Department, or Original Music?
This role for Herrmann fits under original music and music department
Question 5b: Explain in two ways this music works technically the fear and suspense
one way the music works technically to add fear is by the way the violins are played with strings muted when a murder scene is being shown on screen and also the way notes are left to play by them self’s to leave a jarring sound
Question 6a) Explain how the opening sequence after the Title and Credits and before we see Sam and Marion on the bed, informs the audience where and when the story is set.
the way the audience is informed about the location and date from the opening scene is because of the text that appears Phoenix, Arizona : Friday, December the eleventh: Two forty-three pm
Question 6b) This bird’s-eye-view of Phoenix in the 1950s was created before helicopter cams were refined. Look at it again and see if you can explain in a paragraph or two, the production and post-production techniques used to take the audience from a very high point above the city, to a lower point where cars can be seen and heard, and finally to the narrow window sill of the hotel room where Sam and Marion are having their affair.
this was done by taking three different panning shots over the city on the top of rooftop within the city using a multiple lens and changing position of the camera and then edited together with a cross fade effect to making it look like one contuse shot with the wording of location time and date to distract the eye, the sound of cars would of been put in in post-production and the fly in into the window of where we first see Sam and Marion the location would have been changed to a prop set

Location Scout: This is when someone goes out and finds locations that are suitable to film in
Focus Puller: A member of the camera crew who re-aranges the focus of the camera when needed in filming
Location Mixer: A sounds mixer that is responsible for mixing sound that has been recorded on location
Editor: Someone that edits under eye with the director on a movie this normal talks about visual editing
Set Dresser: Someone that looks after the set via the set decorator’s requirements placing props like curtains and paintings, and moving the set decoration to accommodate camera, grip and lighting setups
Question 7: Explain in your own words how the slow overhead camera moves and cross-dissolve edits combine with music and an oblique camera angle in the opening sequence to communicate Hitchcock’s “cruel eyes studying you” view of the world.
The over head camera in the opening scene give a feeling of watching and waiting and links in with a theme of birds in the movie the over head angle feeling like a bird of prey looking for its next target looking and waiting for something to move and the way the camera zooms in on the window give a spy like feeling as if we are observing whats going on as it is appears to be something deviant

Question 8b: explain how the idea of killing off the central character so early came about.
when reading the script he felt as if the story was weak and focused to much on Norman Bates so based the first half on Marian
Question 8c: Marion tells Sam, “ I hate having to be with you in a place like this” to which Sam replies, “ I’ve heard of married couples who deliberately spend an occasional night in a cheap hotel.” Look up and describe the roles of the Property Master and Set Decorator then explain how props like the uneaten lunch and the hotel room set help us sympathise with Marion.
Property Master is responsible for buying, acquiring, manufacturing any props needed they are also responsible for all aspects of prop use on the set and, in conjunction with the script supervisor, for maintaining set continuity.
Set Decorator has total charge of decorating the set with all furnishings, drapery, interior plants, and anything seen on indoor or outdoor sets. the way the uneaten sandwich and hotel room makes us sympathies with Marion is because she used her lunch brake to spend time and meet up with Sam and the hotel rooms is normally know as to where a married person go’s to cheat on there partner
Question 8d) Who was the Costume Designer for Psycho and how does the choice of Marion’s underwear colour also helps us to sympathise with her?
Rita Riggs was the costume designer for this film and the way the underwear worn my Marion in the scene helps us sympathise with her is because it is white and white is commonly linked to purity of what shows her as a innocent young female character
