Beautiful mansion and grounds, wonderful dinner, frustratingly regressive politics.
Milky Way / Pacific surf by Art Walaszek Via Flickr: I almost gave up on this shot. I had been thinking about taking a photo of the Milky Way the night before this one, when I first spotted it over the ocean, somewhat obscured by moonlight. The next day, I had a long chat with a local who shoots astrophotography, and who generously shared many tips. That night, I set the alarm for moonset (around 1 a.m.), looked outside to see a clear night sky, and started getting my gear together. Several minutes later, it started raining, and my view quickly disappeared. Oh well. So, I went back to bed - but before going back to sleep, I noticed that the sky had cleared again. Out the door I ran, across the street to the rocks of the Poipu shore. I set up quickly, spurred on by the clouds rapidly moving towards me again. I took this photo right as the rain started to fall again. My night was done.

An unplanned bonus of our trip to Iceland was seeing the Northern Lights, which were pretty spectacular following a solar flare.
