27 Things I learned Before Turning 27!
Your tribe is the only set of individuals who are going to get you through the rough chaotic messed up days. They will be the ones to laugh at you when you fart and talk about life’s greatest mysteries at 3 am in the morning. Their hugs will feel home and their happiness will warm you up. Make time for them and cherish every single memory that you create together before time slips by. I know who my people are and they know how much I love them which makes my heart very happy.
3. There is a higher power.
No matter how hard it is to believe or wrap our minds around, there is an unexplainable force that is controlling our lives. As an individual we try to control everything, however, things such as frequencies and energy exist! Miracles do take place every day and phenomenal things are happening around the world as I type this very sentence. There is a force making things fall into place. Believe it or not.
I am a huge believer in what you put out is going to come back to you in 10 folds. Do not put out bad vibes, they will come back. Be kind, be positive and send out good vibes. Be yourself. Keep it simple. Keep it real.
5. Carbs are your friend.
You cannot walk in here and convince this Punjabi girl to stop eating bread, potatoes, and rice! Life is short folks and we are not eating 6 bagels here. Moderation is key but NEVER deprive yourself of pasta. Listen to heart and be a bit mindful while listening to it haha.
It won’t only make you feel good but it is so good for your mental health. I have suffered from anxiety and exercise is the one thing that helps me bounce back every time. It keeps your brain focused on moving rather than thinking, will make you feel fabulous once you start seeing the results, and the sweat glow never goes out of style!!
7. If He Likes You, You’ll Know.
I have been the girl who has overanalyzed texts and phone calls. THE AMOUNT OF TIME WELL WASTED over guys who did not want to invest time. The number of tears shed over men who did not reciprocate back. THE AGONY. Dating can be scary especially when you are an awkward hermit crab in front of the opposite sex. If he/ she likes you they will show you. It is all in their actions folks. Don’t trust words.
I have possibly all the movie tickets that I have seen in my lifetime along with exhibition entry pamphlets and plane tickets stored in my memory box. What I love about it is that I have so many memories in tangible form in that box that it surprises me every time to know that the littlest things can bring back some amazing memories.
9. Let Someone Finish Their Story.
When someone is telling us their story, we get so eager to add onto it because we have a connecting thought or a similar story that resonates with us. When someone is telling you a story, allow them to feel significant. Listen to them and allow them to finish. Your connection will get deeper.
10. Vulnerability Creates Connection
What are you about? What are your experiences? Asking questions can be flattering, however, until you share information about yourself, how will one know anything about you. A wise man has taught me to love everyone exactly as they are. He stripped me of having a mask on at all times. He has taught me to express my chaoticness, insecurities, fears, and above all happiness. When you love someone for who they truly are ..you allow them to feel empowered in their own essence. They feel seen and appreciated. Everyone deserves to feel like that. Strip away the small talk, the hehe hahas and get real.
11. Travel, Travel...TRAVEL MORE.
Books will only get you till somewhere, however, experiencing places and seeing them first hand will open your eyes! There are so many cultures, little bookshops, cafe’s, hiking spots, restaurants, and hidden treasures around the globe that are just waiting to be discovered. All you need to do is to fasten your seatbelt.
12. “Water” what you enjoy.
I see my hobbies as a plant. It has been planted, I truly enjoy doing them in my pass time, however, they need to be watered and nurtured. They must be taken care of because many times we fall through the cracks and say “once upon a time I used to enjoy painting” or “once upon a time I used to write”. You have to make time for things you love doing because it adds character to you. It makes you..you! Your passion is going to keep you engaged, hooked and it challenges you to perfect it!
13. Pending Administrative Tasks Will Always Pile On.
Get them done right away. Pronto. Asap. Especially if there are papers involved. Do not delay them. It will make it worse. Screw you Taxes.
I have never cherished weekends as much as I do now after joining a full-time job. Except now, weekends are so precious that I want to get everything done within those 48 hours. Adventure, relaxation, movie marathons and how can you forget video chats with homo sapiens that your heart absolutely adores.
15. If A Book Is Bad, PUT IT DOWN.
Just keep it. Close it. You are not obligated to hurt your brain even more.
16. Graphic Novels..are KICKASS.
Don’t get me wrong I love reading all kinds of books. Autobiographies to mysteries, science fiction, romance, fantasy, chick lit, and crime thrillers! Graphic novels have really changed my views on reading. It was a game changer because THEY ARE REALLY EXCITING. They are fast-paced and the graphics just add this heightened sense of visuals and color. You will never say “My God! That graphic novel was so boring!!”. NO graphic novels are not comic books trying too hard. You are a monster if you think that way.
17. Save -- little by little.
Your older self is going to thank you for it and you will never have to worry about having nothing for a rainy day. Also, hey how cool would it be to retire by the time you are 35! #GOALS. Investments are your friend. Keep your finances in check.
18. Have a Goal. Do something about it.
Lesson learned pretty late but wishful thinking and daydreaming will only get you a few baby steps ahead. If you don’t implement a strategy and plan out how exactly you are going to achieve your goals, they are just going to sit there. There always needs to be a plan. You need to have a solid dartboard to throw the darts into. You have to put your foot forward, grip the dart, aim it and then launch!
19. Reruns of movies and tv shows at 3 am are so much more fun!
I won’t lie. Try it. Oh. And don’t forget the tub of ice cream. Oh and don’t forget the blanket. Oh-oh-oh! and keep the lights off.
20. Make more Home Videos!
I have been looking for home videos from my mum and dad’s time, the vintage ones and it breaks my heart to not have any. Home videos are hands down the one thing that I love watching because they are so raw and genuine. I would love to make home videos for my kids one day so that they can see how much of a secret ninja his/ her mom and dad was.
21. Do not. I repeat. DO NOT mess with your eyebrows.
They are naturally amazing. Do not make it thin. Gawd, don’t draw a line. Clean it up, shape em a bit. The older you get, the faster you will realize this.
22. We all have self-esteem issues and insecurities, bro!
The thing with self-esteem issues is that people who have them often spend all their energy worrying about their 'inadequacy' and failing to please others. Stop conforming according to people’s standards and step back and see if they are fitting YOUR standards. Give yourself some credit. Don’t confuse your mind’s play with reality. Breathe. Step back. Give things a room to breathe.
23. If It Feels Forced, Leave.
You will be exhausted. Forcing to make things work when you are just not feeling it is going to build lots of pressure. You are going to build up all that pressure inside of you and overboil just like rajma (kidney beans) do while cooking in a pressure cooker. You will burst. On the contrary, if it feels organic, fluid and amazing then nurture the hell out of it.
24. There is absolutely no checklist to adulthood. All of those age-old questions -- when are you getting married, when are you having kids, when are going to grow up, have you found someone yet...when are you buying your first house. Stop. Live life the way you want it. You are not obligated to any time frame. Go at your pace. Enjoy what you have.
Legit, if you are the kind of person who can sit alone at a cafe for hours and people watch. WE CAN BE BEST FRIENDS. Grab a book, dress to the nines, reserve a fancy spot for yourself at a fine dining restaurant, watch three movies back to back at a cinema, go for a long drive alone and go on a shopping date with yourself. You need to nurture the relationship that you have with yourself. It all starts with you.
27. Being myself is quite possibly the best thing that happened to me.
I have been the kid who always tried to fit in. What others had in them I would soak that up and say I want that. In the past year, I learned that I always end up looking like a fool when I am not real with myself. It is also the amazing individuals that I have in my life who remind that I am enough #iloveyoumunchkins, however, I learned that there are so many qualities in me that the world needs right now. Why should I waste another minute trying to mold myself into something I am not. That realization was very liberating.
So what are the few things you have learned along the way?
