unpopular opinions but I think both of these things are true

there are racism, misogyny, misandry, transphobia, homophobia, and other harmful ideologies in fandom space, just like everywhere else, unfortunately

not talking about anti censorship stance which is in and of itself politics; while fandom space and fan contents can be a form of activism for some, it doesn’t have to be — and it is not — a form of activism for others

someone not liking a fictional female character doesn’t automatically mean they’re misogynistic. someone disregarding/disliking a fictional female character for the sake of their mlm ship doesn’t automatically mean they’re misogynistic. the point is that you CANNOT apply real life moral compass to fictional stories or how a person enjoys and engages in fiction. you don’t know if they actually are a misogynistic piece of shit, or if they just want to enjoy their gay ship, based on their preferences in fiction or their opinions on fictional characters or how they write fanfiction. not to mention, people are allowed to hate any fictional character for any given reason that has absolutely nothing to do with misogyny or misandry or racism or any harmful ideologies. it’s fiction. fandom space is for fun. it’s not supposed to be an act of activism. and as a woman who’s experienced actual misogyny, to assume that every single person who hates a fictional female character, every single person who is mean to a fictional female character in their fanfic for the sake of their mlm ship, is misogynistic is just blatant wrong.

the exact same thing also applies to people who enjoy darkships and taboo contents in fiction. to assume that every single person who writes about taboo things, every single person who romanticizes fictional taboo things in their fanfic, must condone these taboo things in real life is just blatant wrong.

Saw someone's video for writers to "stop recommending their own fics in the conment section" and like...yeah if there's no reason for it and the video has nothing to do with it, there's no need to do that.

However, if the video says "do you have any recs for such and such trope or fandom" if whatever I've written aligns with what you're looking for, yeah, I'll comment and say "Hey, this is one I've written that matches" and leave it at that.

We aren't...begging for views?

You asked a question and got an appropriate response.

Saying, "Don't recommend that slop. I want recs from true of heart fanfic readers" is.. well, it's something alright.

So anyway, writers, don't be ashamed of sharing your fanfic if someone asks for recommendations that fall into the category they want.

From a fandom view, it isn't promotion, it's connection.

I just want to remind everyone, reader and writers alike, that while, yes, there are rules to writing, but writing is also an art.

In art, you are allowed to break the rules.

I'm currently reading The Calamity Club, and while the readers on ao3 bitch about writers "not following the rules" successful authors are doing exactly that.

Closed quotations are not the only rule to show a character is speaking.

Oh, and btw the people that argued with me about "there aren't em-dashes in real books"...

What....what do you see on the page of a published novel, hm?

For all the people that say, "I HATE authors who post chapters that are less than 2000, 5,000, 10,000 words."

I just posted a chapter at a whopping 460 words 😊

I didn't think this would have to be said, but apparently it does.

Making a tiktok where you bash authors for errors in their writing and then "defending" yourself in the comments saying that you don't comment the complaint on their fic does not redeem yourself.

You are actually worse than the person leaving hate comments on a fic because you get on your little platform and bump yourself up with tags to spread your complaints and encourage others to hate on fic authors and their writing.

If you're going to complain about the writing of the fics, then don't read them.

It's that simple.

Keep in mind that ao3 tags are not intended to be used as "reach."

Tagging your fanfic is not about the quantity of people who see your fic it's about the right people that see your fic.

If it's not in your fic, don't tag it, or the effort will only be a hit and not a reader.

I think part of the problem today is that we, as writers, are so focused on writing for what the audience will like and not simply writing for the sake of telling a story.

"I can't write 1st, 2nd, or 3rd person, use these vocabulary words, or make these two characters kiss, because someone who picks up my story might not like it."

Yeah, so?

Let them not like it and write it anyway.
