Last day in Indo also coincides with independence day.. after spending 2 months exploring .001% of the 17,000 islands that make up the country, im proud to say that i have roots in such a beautiful, warm, spiritual, and diverse place filled with equally beautiful, warm, spirtual and diverse people. Thank u to all the people I've met... your openness and kindness have meant so much to me. Today I visited the public school @barackobama attended when he live in Jakarta. There's a small statue and plaque commerating their famous alum. I can't begin to recount the number of times people gleefully exclaimed "obama!" anytime I've mentioned I'm from the US during my travela. Theres no other figure that elicits such positive sentiment from people around the globe. Obama represents everything RIGHT with our country... he embodies the American dream, with all its hopes and promises hanging precariously on its well-worn bootstraps. Obama makes me proud to be from the US. And this is why i am so alarmed about a potential Trump presidency. If obama exemplifies our best qualities, trump exhibits our worst... while his supporters may have some legitimate fears that we need to acknowledge, Trump's rhetoric alongside his complete lack of knowledge and brash reactions are dangerous when we provide him with power and legitmacy... let's not forget Hitler was popularly elected by the people... right now we are battling for the soul of our democracy... and whether we remain a beautiful, optimistic land of opportunity or become paranoid exclusionists hell bent on reverting all our progress.. theres no need to make america great again because it's already great... what we do need to do is work together to make it better for all. #livingthedrea #ImWithHer (at SDN Menteng 01 (Barry School))

Because its Thursday (#tbt) and I'm still unemployed which means I can post semi-ratchet videos... and because the US is crushing it in the Olympics 💪 #rio2016 #twerkteam #teamusa But mostly because I miss Rio, cidade maravilhosa.... drinking $2 caipis, munching on paõ de queijo and açai, impromptu samba parties on the streets at all hours of the day (fave was under the arches in lapa!!!!), wearing my cheeky bikini while watching the sunset on ipanema, listening to emphatic conversations while pretending to speak/sing Brazilian Portuguese (nay fudendoooo... ca-rai-oooooooo.. bellezaaaa... leg-owwwwww) and of course, the sexyyyyy, friendly, vivacious and lovely Cariocas... never have I felt so welcomed to a place. After spending a week living in the house where my grandma raised 7 children as a young widow and where my mom spent her childhood before leaving to attend university in the US, I realize I am the person I am today because of their strength and sacrifices. I stand, not on the shoulders of giants, but on the shoulders of two petite women with enormous hearts, dauntless aspirations and courage beyond measure. Every parent hopes that their child knows a better life than theirs and I hope I make you two proud every day... thank u for making me who I am today and giving me all the opportunities you never had #livingthedrea (at Medan, Indonesia)

In order to save a whooping $5, my friend, Antonia, and I took the local buses all the way from lake toba to Berastagi. Instead of a comfy 3 hour ride on the tourist bus, we spent 7 hours hopping on and off boats, buses and mini vans.... of course, one of the buses ended up breaking down in a small little town, right in front of a mosque where a bunch of kids were playing. They came over to say hello and give us high fives and take photos with us... we left with huge smiles on our faces even though we were tired and hanngggggry... They say "time is money" and even though my bank account is alarmingly dwindling to a very low point, I still feel rich because of encounters like this... people try and save money and save time but there comes a point that it's more important to savor them.... the memories I've made while taking the long slow way are priceless #livingthedrea (at Berastagi)
