What Are Your Goals For Summer 2020?
Hi ladies! Summer is quickly approaching us and as we prepare to open up states, the only thing on my mind is how this summer will treat me. The summertime is my favorite season and it brings so much joy and fun before facing yet another hard school semester. There are so many spots to check out in great weather, plan trips with your girls, or even plan a baecation with your man. The summertime is for the good laughs and to forget about the horrible start to 2020. What exactly do you have planned for the summer? Any huge job/internship opportunities? However, if you don’t, there’s nothing wrong with that. You still have plenty of time to plan out your summer and of course, I’m here to help! Let’s get this party started.
1. Before we plan anything fun, how are your finances? If they aren’t doing as well as you want them to be, it’s fine. This calls for looking for a new place of employment and finding ways to accumulate multiple sources of income. You have to put your priorities first before you decide to go out for drinks with your friends or cash out on a summer shopping spree. There are tons of job opportunities; all you have to do is search, polish up your resume, and put on your interview clothing. You got this, girl!
2. Although COVID-19 took away our flights and cruises, there are other ways you can plan a trip with either your friends, family or significant other. Road trips are IN this season! You can rent a nice car and put some miles on it. You can spend valuable time with your loved ones, while enjoying the scenery around you. You can stop at multiple places, book beautiful hotel rooms, and jam out to your playlists the whole trip. You should think about it before you completely give up on your vacation dreams this summer.
3. Try something new! It’s beautiful weather all summer so this calls for a newfound confidence. One way to flaunt this new confidence is to get into something you’ve never thought you would do. One summer, I decided to take modelling more seriously so this gave me an opportunity to shoot a swimwear line at the beach and to shoot at various places in NYC. You can find this new hobby exciting and will give you something to do, that’s productive.
4. Plan self-care weekends. If you don’t want to surround yourself with a bunch of people or want to take a break from the party life, get away from all of the noise! Spas are very calming and you will be able to pamper yourself, while getting away. You can book a hotel room for yourself and indulge in the beautiful scenery. Sometimes, all it takes is a couple of days in your own solitude to bring back your sanity.
5. Switch up your usual style and go BOLD! I recently cut all of my hair and it’s definitely the look I want for the summer. It brings me more confidence and challenges me to be different from the usual look. A new hairstyle or a new wardrobe can give you the confidence you want for the summer. Go for the bold color, the risky clothing, do it all!
Rape Is A Serious Matter: Create A Safe Space For Victims
Hi girls! Today has brought the state of New Jersey in a frenzy when a Twitter page called, @safespacenj released sensitive content from multiple, anonymous young women about their traumatic experiences. Many of these women were held against their will and were forced to participate in sexual activities with these men. Every girl has come out anonymous, afraid of what might happen to them. The various comments and debates will have you in disbelief. Many people are laughing at the fact that these young women are telling their truth anonymously and believe their stories are fake. This is the main reason why women are afraid to speak out against the traumatic experiences they have dealt with because of the ignorant comments that come with it. Rape is a serious matter and isn’t something you should joke about it. These accusations can affect someone’s life; the victim’s and the assaulter. Your first natural instinct shouldn’t be to judge this person, but sympathize and understand the bravery it took to come out with a horrible truth. This twitter page can either be a great platform for young women who haven’t had the courage to speak up or can be detrimental to someone’s future if you use this platform for spiteful purposes.
Today should open your eyes to what’s going on around you. Many young men believe that they are entitled to sex from a woman because she has decided to spend time with them, wear what she wants around them, and meet with them after a certain time. Just because the meet up is after a certain time, or she agrees to see you doesn’t give you the right to push sexual activities onto her. Many of these stories show how much our young men need to change and how the people around them to speak up against it so no one else gets hurt. If you know anyone who purposely hurts woman or men sexually, please stop them; it doesn’t matter if that’s your friend or your brother or classmate.
For all women of all ages and colors, you should carry a weapon to ensure safety. Women are seen as vulnerable and uncapable of fighting a man off because of their height and weight advantage. Weapons can help you in a situation that can threaten your safety and allow you to get away from an assaulter. You should carry weapons that are legal in your state and easy to carry, such as pepper spray, mace, a handknife, etc. You should share your location with your friends or family members so they can know your whereabouts if you ever can’t reach your phone and you’re in danger. You should also, always tell someone about your whereabouts if you are unsure about your safety in this specific place or with a specific person.
Many women have been raped or sexually assaulted and are afraid to speak up against it. If you know anyone who has been through something so traumatic, please help them speak up against it even if it’s anonymous. You deserve the right to share your story to prevent this happening to another girl like you and deserve justice for the heinous crime this person has committed. Rape is nothing to joke about and certainly shouldn’t be frowned upon when someone speaks up against it.

Cut All Of Your Dead Ends: My Natural Hair Journey
Hi girls! I have recently stepped into the natural world and I can honestly say I love it here. Before I decided to do the big chop, my hair was struggling due to the several months of excessive heat and it caused severe breakage & a very loose curl pattern. I was so tired of washing my hair and becoming so disappointed in the lack of health it showed. I decided during Quarantine, I should try new things including cutting all dead ends.
By cutting dead ends, I was talking about hair; but also, toxic relationships. While I decided to cut my dead hair off, I chose to leave people in my past who were no good for me, decided to find new routines that influence growth in my future, and to start a new natural hair journey. Yes, it may be very difficult to develop new habits and to let go of ways that you are comfortable with but they will never help you become the woman you want to be in the future. Let’s start with cutting dead ends off now, while you have time to take care of yourself and strategize. As I am still finding healthy techniques to take care of my curls, I am reading all about what it means to have healthy hair and how important it is for an African-American woman. My friend, Brianna has a blog named @blackcotics where she has wrote a special piece on black hair. Her blog post inspired me to chop my hair off and start fresh, so I recommend for you to go check it out!
For all of the girls who are questioning whether or not to start fresh with your hair, you should do it! It’s so liberating and it allows you to experiment with new hairstyles in a healthy way. Down below is a picture of my new haircut. Doesn’t it just fit my face? This can be you too! You just need the confidence and braveness to do so! If you need any tips on how to do the big chop and how to maintain it, I will add informative YouTube videos that have helped me, as well.
The Battle Of Live Twerk Battles
Hi girls! From my title, you should know what I’m about to talk about, especially if you have an Instagram page. During Quarantine, there has been a huge trend of live twerk battles on celebrities’ pages such as Boosie and Tory Lanez. There are various, different opinions on how this can either uplift sex workers, strippers, etc. to earn money during a financial crisis or it can degrade women by the vulgar behavior these celebrities present. Instagram has become a platform where women can show off their bodies for a form of payment, while being gawked at by thousands of people around the world.
Seen below, Tory Lanez is notoriously known for starting the Live Twerk Battles on Instagram. He uses his huge platform on Instagram to promote his recent album that dropped through his highly-watched Instagram live videos. Ladies from all over the world are participating in this battle in hopes of earning money, since most Americans aren’t able to work and make ends meet. Not only does he allow these women to earn money, he promotes their social media accounts for publicity. He allows the participants to chat along with him, take shots, and interact with the viewers through the comments. His influence on Instagram has started a huge trend, as many other famous people start to create these battles as well. Many women find this to be very dehumanizing as he forces women to show nudity (have to twerk with minimal clothing on, have to pour drinks on their buttocks, etc) and if these women do not abide by the guidelines, they will be kicked off the live video. His live video has also, violated Instagram’s guidelines and was taken down once because of this. His live video can be seen by all ages and it becomes a problem for younger women.
As his Instagram account becomes more popular, other famous celebrities participate in their own live twerk battles. Recently, there was a huge debate about Diddy’s Instagram live where he allowed two women of different body types join and he had different behaviors when both started to twerk. Diddy hosted a Dance-a-thon to raise donations for Direct Relief, which is a non-profit that supplies personal protective equipment to healthcare workers across the country. His Instagram live was for a great cause;however, he was slammed for his different behaviors towards these two women. The first woman he allowed to dance on his live video was Lizzo who is a pop singer and she is known for showcasing her confidence for being a plus-sized woman. Lizzo joined the live and started to twerk while dancing with Diddy and his sons. As soon as she started, he ran back to the frame and told the DJ to cut the music off. This startled Lizzo and she immediately stopped twerking out of respect and they changed the music into something “more family-friendly.” However, later in the Dance-a-thon, Draya who is a model and known for her curvy body opted to do the same dance moves, Diddy allowed her to. He even danced along with her and his sons in the background as they danced to a vulgar song. Quickly, fans took offense because he allowed one woman who is of smaller frame to dance but the bigger woman had to stop for his sake. Many people believed that Diddy’s differing responses to the celebrities showed a “fat phobia.” Lizzo has been through this before and constantly exposes the industry for bashing her because of her body shape. What Diddy did was shameful and feeds into why Lizzo is shamed for her bigger body shape. In my opinion, Lizzo was killing it compared to Draya, who was giving drunk auntie vibes. These live twerk battles can either be very helpful towards a cause or to unemployed women; or can be detrimental to the vulgar behavior presented towards women.
Now that you are caught up on today’s Instagram events, tell me what you think about in the comments!
“You’re Not Alone, Girl:”How To Maintain A Happy & Healthy Quarantine
Hey girls! How’s your quarantine going? If you’re going through a rough time being surrounded by nosey family members or financial troubles, I’m here to give you tips on how to maintain a healthy mindset. March was a very hard month for us all as we adjust to a new life of health precautions and fear of the COVID-19. We are implemented to self-quarantine and stay indoors at all costs which means tons of Netflix sessions, unhealthy eating habits, and considering sending that toxic text to your ex. I’m here to tell you that you can still keep your healthy routine while at home and even pick up new hobbies that can beneficial for the future. Once you read through my tips, let me know if they were helpful or not.
1. You should pick up a new hobby. Sitting in the house all day can be very boring and tiresome. At first, it can be the best thing that ever happened to you, but as the days roll by, you start to find yourself stuck in a bubble. You should find comfort in a hobby like painting, sewing, or even making up dances on Tik Tok. These hobbies could result in a new source of income if you become really good at it.
2. You should find ways to work out at home. Just because all of the gyms are closed doesn’t mean you have to stop your exercising. You can buy affordable weights, resistance bands, etc at Five Below. This can help you maintain a healthy routine and allow you to stay occupied in a beneficial way. There are great workout routines on YouTube and you can even go the extra length of purchasing Iaso tea, which helps cleanse your body and lose weight. One of my sisters, Finahiya Z aka @finahiya__ who sells Iaso tea on her Instagram page that helps people lose weight in a healthy way. Check out her page if you are looking to buy her products!
3. You should stay in contact with your girlfriends. You don't have to spend the time in your house bored; you should reach out to friends and even mend relationships that need repairing. You can stay on facetime with your friends while studying for the next exam or even watch a movie together over the phone. I know when I’m bored, I tend to back track and result in toxic decisions. Don't go running back to your ex or planning a sneaky link. You should go hang out with a girlfriend or spend time repairing a bond that was lost because of the distance and different schools.
4. If you are going through financial problems, there are jobs available in emergency stores such as supermarkets. Even though it’s not the healthiest, you still need a source of income during this unfortunate time. You can also apply for unemployment which there is nothing to be ashamed of; most people will be applying for unemployment. They will supply you with a check weekly equal to the paycheck you would receive at your job and you are able to afford rent, food, etc. You shouldn’t stress about a situation you never put yourself in. Remain stress-free and allow yourself to relax while maintaining to be safe.
As the time goes by, I will continue to update you on ways to remain healthy and safe during the quarantine. I wish you and your family to remain safe during this crucial time. The times may be hard right now, but these rough times never last. We all are going through a rough time, so you are not alone. I’m here to be your friend and let you know everything will be okay.

One of the Most Powerful Women in Politics: Maxine Waters
Today, I want to start my women’s history month collection with one of my favorite women in the world, Maxine Waters. Maxine Waters has gained a reputation as a fearless and outspoke advocate for women, children, people of color, and the poor. Congresswoman Waters represents a large part of South Los Angeles; she was elected in November 2018 to her fifteenth term in the US House of Representatives. She has made history as the first woman and the first African American chair of the House Financial Services Committee. That’s what you call a strong black woman! She continues to be a strong role model for women in politics. As a black woman who dominates in a field full of white, old men, she has shown the world that anything is possible.
Maxine Waters comes from a similar background; no handouts given to her. She was born in St.Louis, Missouri; the fifth of 13 children who were raised by a single mother. She began working at the age of 13 in factories and restaurants. She is no stranger to hard work; coming from such a young age. She attended California State University at Los Angeles, where she earned her Bachelor’s degree. She began a career in public service as a teacher and a volunteer coordinator in the Head Start Program.
Congresswoman Waters’ Accomplishments:
1. Introduced the 2nd most bills compared to California Delegation; 30 bills and solutions in 2017
2. Got the 18th most cosponsors on their bills compared to All Representatives; 644 cosponsors in the year of 2017
3. Waters holds a leadership position on 1 committee
4. Ranked the 26th top leader compared to the House of Democrats
From the great words of Maxine Waters, “I’m a strong black woman, and I cannot be intimidated. I cannot be undermined.”
Happy Women’s Herstory Month!
Black girls,
“Don’t be afraid to use your voice! Your voice, thoughts, opinions, and ideas are just as important as anybody else’s. When you speak, you speak with boldness and purpose. Have courage, be confident, and always be true to yourself! Live your life fearlessly! Your voice has great power; don’t be afraid to utilize when needed. You’re not a mad black woman; you’re a woman who has something important to say. Your voice matters and so do YOU!”- Stephanie Lahart
Hey girls! This month is dedicated to us!! How good does it feel to celebrate women from history and today’s time all month? This month, I want to write multiple blog posts that share the history and accomplishments of black women all month. This month is important because for decades, men have always been praised and held up on a pedestal, when women were expected to be seen and not heard. Every other day or week, I will show you a great African-American woman role model who has changed today’s world. I’m excited to teach you a thing or two on why black women are fantastic and strong. For all of my beautiful black girls, continue to hold up your crown and shine throughout the day.
In celebration of Black Herstory Month, we put together a playlist on Youtube highlighting our Top 29 Hip-Hop Tracks This Week. You can listen to the full playlist here or below.

HBCU vs. PWI: What School is Best For You?
Hey, girls. First off, I would like to apologize for the long delay of my blog posts. I have been very busy with work and school, which made it hard to focus on my writing. However, I realized I haven’t spoken with you guys in so long and I have so much to talk about. Today is the start to our long overdue conversation.
This blog post goes to all of my girls who are seniors in high school. Since I know the time is crunching down to make your official decision for college, I’m here to help you make that hard decision. This decision can be very stressful because you have to think about every factor (safety, student & teacher diversity, food, cost, etc) and how these factors are the best for you. The huge debate of PWIs vs. HBCUs has been discussed for years and still remains because of the constant issues that happen on both campuses. Before I get into the facts of the different campuses, I would like to share my personal experience at Ramapo College of New Jersey. I attend a PWI and the first thing I noticed when I moved in was the lack of diversity. Coming from a high school located in Newark, NJ with majority of African-American students, this imbalance of diversity shocked me. I saw myself in the mix of majority white students with a sprinkle of minorities and at first, it scared me. However, attending a PWI in a rural area helped me realize that not all my life, I will be around people who look just like me and it’s better to get out of your comfort zone now then later. Yes, I would have loved to know the experience of attending a HBCU but there were more factors that made me lean towards a PWI (which I would speak about now.)
HBCU:
Historically Black College Campus/ Univeristies are seen as a safe haven for black students; to have quality education without the constant worry of being stigmatized or potentially exposed to violence. While these institutions have a focus on the education of African American students, these colleges or universities are open to any race, religion, or gender. Most of the students and professors are African-American which can be very comforting for black students. HBCU’s hold a huge significance in Black History, as it opened a door for educational opportunity for many blacks who were once legally denied an education.
Pros of Attending an HBCU:
1. The atmosphere of an HBCU holds a very prideful joy for their school with great marching bands, stellar cheerleaders, and students dripped out in college gear. If you are considering going to an HBCU, please come with great pride for your school and it’s great history. If you want people who look just like you and want to surround yourself with a respected history.
2. HBCU’s provide an abundance of scholarships and grants for students who showed great excellence in high school. Many HBCU’s are out of state if you live in New Jersey and tuition can be very pricey. This is why it’s so important to go after any scholarship or grant your school can provide for you.
3. There are great opportunities to join in extracurricular activities such as cheerleading, sports, and professional networking. There are several alumni committees that take the time to cater to the current students on campus and let them find great opportunities for their future.
Here are some famous HBCU’s that you might spend the next four years:
Howard University (Washington DC)
Morgan State University (Baltimore, MD)
Spelman/Morehouse College (Atlanta, GA)
North Carolina A&T University (Greensboro, NC)
PWIs:
A Predominately White Institution is a institution of higher learning with 50% or more of the students who identify as white. It’s basically the opposite of an HBCU; however, the atmosphere and daily life of a student here differ. PWI’s have great history as well, as many go back wayyyyyy before us and our parents. There are typically more students who attend PWI’s so classroom size can be as huge as a lecture hall. Other races attend PWI’s and now, many of these institutions are advocating for a more diverse campus, which can really benefit you.
Pros of Attending an PWI:
1. There is a better chance of receiving scholarships or a better financial aid package because PWIs have higher endowments due to financial assets donating more than to HBCU’s. If you are thinking about the financial costs, you may end up at a PWI simply because they may give you a better financial aid package.
2. There is a larger field of networking at a PWI. You are able to reach out to more reputable companies you would like to work for when you graduate from college. There are an abundance of opportunities laid out for you which may not be the same at an HBCU.
3. Even though this is an PWI, there are a variety of ethnic organizations such as BSU or ASA that represent the minorities at school. You may find these organizations your home as you can find people who look just like you. These organizations participate in a lot of events at school and bring awareness of better diversity on campus.
Here are some famous PWI’s you might spend the next four years:
Duke University (Durham, North Carolina)
Cornell University (Ithaca, New York)
University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania)
Loyola University (Baltimore, Maryland)
