Last one, and a huge fave of mine.
Susanna Hoffs of The Bangles nudged me to post this one. During one of our Zoom discussions, Susanna and Bangles drummer, Debbi Peterson, remembered that The Bangles had played this song many times in concert.
Brian was in the room, and mentioned that he'd attended two of those shows. He "got a huge kick out of" The Bangles' version, he remembered.
Wow!
Speaking of the car songs, here's another.
When I play Beach Boys music for men who've never heard it, they're usually impressed in a neck-up kinda way. But this one? Stops men dead in their tracks.
Auto racing history, I guess.

There used to be a compilation album of nothing but The Beach Boys' car songs.
I wonder if it's still in print.
My personal favorite.
Those chord changes, yes. But my favorite thing about this song is Brian's empathy for a girl who's been kicked around.
A lot of people make a big deal of the sun-kissed and perfect lifestyle that The Beach Boys supposedly exemplified. But, if you listen closely, you will hear their profound identification with the underdog.
Okay. Now that you've heard the legendary work of the band, here are some superfan favorites that usually escape people's notice.
No, they're not deep cuts. These were hits. Gah!
Love and Mercy, the theatrical film that documents Brian Wilson's life, is probably streaming somewhere. You should see it, if this sound captivates you at all.

Where to start?
I figure you'll get the historical context from legacy media. These are just my favorites, dating back from when I was an orchestra and choir nerd, a high school kid discovering The Beach Boys long after they had dropped off the charts.
I knew it was coming, and I thought I was going to know what to say.
There's just so much to remember.
When the Facebook Rockers group started showing up at our Zoom suite, we were honored beyond comprehension. Brian was almost always there, feeding us tidbits about his life, and about how the band, and their faithful and true bunch of session cats -- The Wrecking Crew -- had made those wonderful sounds.
Let's just say that the books yet to be written -- the musical biographies of The Beach Boys -- will thrill you beyond reason if they ever see the light of day.
Beyond that, Brian was just the nicest guy you could ever hope to meet. He and the band had grown up just up the road from where I was raised, and we shared many happy memories and astute observations of our Southern California home.
Brian was a neighbor. All the Beach Boys were.
Love and mercy all summer long, in the land of endless summer, Bri. We will miss you so terribly, but we will be at peace because we know that, wherever you are, you have found peace at last.
The rest of you -- especially those who don't understand what all the fuss is about -- stick around. There's Beach Boys music coming.

Consequently, students of old time, string band, and bluegrass music have more accurate information than that Hillary Clinton-funded bomb thrower ever did.

Time To Have The Talk . . . Again
Do y'all actually believe that someone is disease-free just because they say so AND they're a celebrity?
There's a problem with that level of gullibility: It's killing people.
We have credible reports, from multiple sources, of top-name artists -- in the very genres we play -- infected with the AIDS virus, even though they're swearing to their hookups that they're clean.
AIDS hasn't reached epidemic proportions in the music biz, but it's getting there, and it is no respecter of gender.
Did you hear me?
I said that people on all points of the gender spectrum are being infected with AIDS by their superstar crushes. That goes for people all along the political spectrum, too.
No one is immune. And, yes, I am old enough to be your mother. Whatever.
When some else is doing the infecting, it's not your choice anymore. Wake up.
You could ask for a better class of inductees. This is great news!
How is it that people STILL don't get what this song means?

POV: borderline panic when you realize what ISN'T in the National Recording Registry.
Not our field, so we crowd sourced it: Does the National Museum of African American History and Culture promote anti-American ideology?
One answer put an end to our research: Seems one of the exhibits plays early radio interviews with Elvis Presley from 1955. When Presley is asked, "Where do you get this music?", he replies, "Arthur Crudup and Big Mama Thornton."
Both artists were Black, both the the descendants of slaves. Crudup wrote "That's All Right"; Thornton, " Hound Dog".
This devastating information pushes back on an iconic rap song -- possibly the most iconic of rap song ever: Public Enemy's "Fight the Power" paints Presley as an unrepentant racist who enriched himself by plundering Black culture without crediting the Black artists who originated it.
On further research, we learned that Junior Trump owns nearly 70 radio stations whose playlists emphasize hip hop that our source deemed "hardcore" and "gangsta".
Maybe that's the reason they're defunding the National Museum of African American History and Culture.
