Lux sighed and left her mess behind. it wasn’t like she could do anything about it anyway. She followed after him a bit annoyed at being ignored. “Okay Mr. Attitude. you could at least pretend to be at all interested in seeing me. All that brooding is going to give you premature wrinkles.”

He rolled his eyes, knowing she couldn’t see it, following behind him. “Whatever, I don’t care about wrinkles. Maybe you should talk to Abby about wrinkle cures, since I can see yours are becoming more prominent,” he said over his shoulder. “And I’m not interested in seeing any of you. I’m here because I have to be, and that’s it.”

Lux heard a car door slam on her way into the kitchen and stopped to be nosey. She tried to peek out the window but she tripped and pulled the curtain down with her and landed in a heap. The door door opened and she jumped to her feet and dusted herself off. “Hi Elliot.”

He heard the clatter in the kitchen before he found Lux crumpled on the floor, heaving herself back up. She gave a gracious hello, as if he didn’t just catch her in an excruciatingly awkward position. He rolled his eyes and walked past her, “Lux.”

Abby noticed the quick turn of Elliot’s attitude.  “You don’t have to go seem him if you don’t want to, I guess.  It’s not like anyone’s forcing you to.”  She walked towards him and put her hand on his shoulder. “We’re all going through something different.  No one expects you to be or act or do something that you wouldn’t normally.”  She offered a reassuring smile but stopped when she realized it wasn’t working.

Elliot shrugged her off. He knew she was only trying to help, but he hated that. She looked at him like he was weak, like he couldn’t handle this. All this talk about there not being a correct way to grieve just seemed like her saying he was doing it wrong. Like she was condescendingly telling him he had no right to feel what he felt. “Yeah, thanks Dr. Phil, I got it.”

 “Haven’t changed a bit, huh?” He smirked as he passed his younger brother by, hand reaching out to mess up his hair along the way. Shaun never did expect a grand welcome from Elliot. He lingered in the kitchen, staring into the fridge, his stomach rumbling. “How long have you been here?”

As Shaun ruffled his hair, Elliot scowled. He had never liked how carefree Shaun was, thinking only a complete moron could live without a care in the world like that. He was never worried about bills or having a job or anything it seemed. And that never quite sat right with Elliot. “Few days,” he answered, grumpily.

“Okay, bad question, I guess,” Abby muttered, a heavy sigh following.  “Dad’s okay. I went and saw him as soon as I got back. It’s kinda crazy not having him in here with all of us home.  It’s still the same house, but mom’s gone and dad’s gone, and now it’s just an empty shell.”  She lowered the bag to the ground once she entered his room. “The doctors are doing everything they can right now.”  She went over to the window and peeked out, looking at everything still the same.

Elliot grimaced as Abby described it. He couldn’t imagine his father, the strongest man he had ever known, living as such a shell of himself. He thought about Dan, his eldest brother, and how he reminded Elliot so much of their father. “I don’t want to go see him,” he muttered.

Elliot grabbed the pillow and rolled his eyes at his older brother. “Yeah, I’m sure you’re so thrilled to be back with all of us after living your rock star-esque lifestyle.”

Abby began pulling him up the stairs.  “So you sit in your home and stare at a blank wall? You don’t breathe or eat?”  She shook her head then shot him an annoyed glance.  “Please.  Tell me something,” she begged, gasping only slightly for air as they reached the top.  She turned around to look at him a few steps down. “Your daily routine perhaps? If you don’t do anything, it shouldn’t be too long.”

He sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. Abby, I don’t have a daily routine. Fuck, I don’t even have a real job. I really don’t want to talk about this right now,” he said, trying to change the subject, but losing. “How’s Dad?”

Shaun dropped his backpack carrying nearly all his possessions in the front hallway of the house and breathed in the familiar scents. Everything seemed to have untouched, like straight out of his memories. Maybe he did miss his place a little bit. “Guess who’s home?” He called out, pushing sunglasses up to rest on his head and mess up his hair. He hoped that he wasn’t the last one to show up this time.

Elliot was trudging down the stairs as he heard his brother enter. He rolled his eyes, his disdain for Shaun evident in his demeanor. “Whoopdie shit for you,” he mocked. “We’re all so excited to have you back.”

“Listen. I got maybe…two hours of sleep last night?” He’s really not in the mood to be fucked around with, plus having to go to work today and deal with a wannabe diva wasn’t exactly his cup of tea. “And a hard day at work. What do you want?” He says as he lays back against the sofa.

“Shut the fuck up, Alex. I’m getting this pillow for Dad, since it’s the only pillow he’ll have,” Elliot sneers with a roll of his eyes. He wasn’t in the mood to deal with Alex’s attitude or his father today.

“No, you’re not the last one.”  The house was beginning to fill up and soon they would be reunited under one roof.  It would be chaos but Abby looked forward to seeing her beloved family.  She studied his face then looped one arm through his.  “Change of subject? Let’s talk about you.”  Abby pulled his bag from the ground and began heading to the room he’d be staying in.  “What has my little Elliot been up to these days?”

“First of all, don’t call me little Elliot. I’m older than you, and I’ve never been littler than you. I’ve never been little in general. So let’s just throw that one out the door,” he said, letting her arm hang loosely in his. “I’ve been up to nothing. As per usual. Is that what you wanted to hear?”

Abby reluctantly bent down and picked up the lightest bag possible then brushed a loose strand of hair aside. “I’ve been here for a day and a half, I think? Seems a lot shorter but I’m here.” She forced a smile then generously eyed her older brother.  “You look…different.”

“Feels shorter than that? Must be I’m not the last one to arrive then,” he muttered, more to himself than to her. If the others had been around, the days would drag on. The group as a whole was not nearly as cheery as the Brady Bunch. “Can’t imagine why.”

“Elliot!”  Abby ran towards her brother after having spent some time in the elaborate gardens behind the house.  With flowers in hand, she rushed Elliot, wrapping her dainty arms around him. “I’ve missed you!”  Glancing at his bags, then back at him, she asked, “Did you just get here?”

He grimaced as he heard the shrill squeals of his youngest sister. He let her arms slide around him, and he tried to comfort her in a similar way. “Hi ‘Gails. Yeah, I just got here. Be useful and grab a bag,” he ordered. Abby was the closest to Elliot in age, and therefore his closest sibling. When they were younger, he liked to pretend they were twins, though he never admitted it to anyone out loud. “How long have you been here?”

Elliot hopped out of his best friend’s car and stared up at the house he had grown up in, a look of disdain etched on his face. “Fuck,” he said, spitting on the ground. He picked up his bags and headed inside, running into a familiar familial face.
