Over and over,
We've fucked ourselves over,
And under, and under,
We do it again.

Somewhere in the back, a movement caught Arbour's eye. It seemed like.. a swish of a tail? When their gaze finally returned to the hall as a whole, a familiar silhouette was sitting in the front row.
Author's figure towered over the rows upon rows of pews. Their paws, only two of them for the moment, were on their knees. Their posture was proper, as if they were simply one of the visitors, awaiting a sermon. Nothing more, nothing less.
The god's gaze drilled into Arbour expectantly. They nodded slightly as a manner of greeting, but not a word left their mouth. They awaited.

rp starter - sermon || @write-like-its-goin-out-of-style
The recognition of the movement was instant - Author's face was the only one she'd had the blessing of seeing during her six hundred years on that damned dock - and Arbour's gaze followed it, returning to the sanctuary after a moment and meeting the god's eyes. Their attention weighed on her shoulders, a presence she was so familiar with. It didn't suffocate, unlike some of the other Councilmen's might have. No. Theirs held her steady, just as it had when they'd visited her in limbo. A buoy in the thrashing waves of her mind. A stone to hold onto against the current.
Her shoulders rose and fell in a deep breath as she let her eyes fall to the empty pedestal before her, the book that had once rested there for her to preach from long gone. Stolen, probably. Maybe burnt, or shredded. Drowned, even. Those were potentials she didn't want to think about.
"Readily approaching us comes a day of solstice and rejoicing, the anniversary of You bringing us and the terrain beneath our feet into reality. Thus, we shall celebrate in Your name, for it is You we have to thank for our humble existence."
Her hands tightened on the edges of the podium. Something in her chest wrenched tight, earning a silent grimace from her as her head fell for a few beats. None of this was right. Prime had abandoned her. Left her for dead. Why was she worshipping Them now? Why, when They had discarded her, acted as if she had meant nothing to Them, after all she had done for Them? After devoting her life, her very being to Them and Their name?
Worship. Fall to your knees and beg. Beg for Their acknowledgement and Their forgiveness, for you are sinful. Ugly and worthless.
Worthless child.
"Brothers and sisters!"
Arbour's voice gained an edge as she forced the thoughts out of her head. Praise. Worship. Her hand raised to the heavens, as if addressing Prime themself in those familiar chants. Her voice echoed through the church just as it had so many times before... And yet, it still felt unfamiliar. Alien, even.
"Lord Prime has taken notice of our worship, and They smile upon us. We must prove to Them our gratitude for the approaching day of celebration. I pray to see you gathered at the approaching festival with clasped hands and merry voices. Blessed be."
The smile that had found its way onto her face slid away as the sermon tapered off into nothing. Normally the church would have exploded into conversation after those closing words were spoken, worshipers murmuring with excitement about the celebration. Making plans. Her brothers and sisters in Their name.
But no. This time, the Church of Prime fell into an oppressive silence.

"WS000038. Explain how Subject 45 can at all resist the serum you created." (Cucurucho)
They physically paused at his words, their ears drawing back as their brow knotted in confusion. Resisting the control serum? No, that's impossible. Statistically so, they'd made sure that it was- There was no way they could've been wrong! They couldn't-...
"It's not- That's not logistically possible, I made sure of it. What do you mean, he's resisting it?"
Arbour turned to face the bear-like figure with narrow eyes as they spoke, their tail lashing in their confusion.

"Yeah... sure... Phil's busy and Uncle Tech's out... so I'll do whatever you want to."
His voice lost it's enthusiasm. He could tell Arbour was trying to distract him, but it only made him feel worse. He quietly made his way to the door, trying to shut his own emotions off, to disassociate from the pain he felt.
He didn't enjoy this feeling in all honesty. Shutting his emotions off. It felt wrong but it was the only thing he knew how to do to keep others happy. Swallow your hurt and put that smile on. Everyone expects you to wear a smile.
"It won't burn if you leave it?"
[ With more of a casual tone to their movements than it seemed appropriate, Arbour slipped a splash potion bottle off of their belt, tossing it into the fire pit beneath the cauldron. The flames went out instantly when the bottle shattered, not even embers remaining. ]
"It won't now. C'mon, I know a great place to start."
[ The being gestured for him to follow and stepped out into the hallway, taking their coat off of the back of their workroom door on the way out. Stopping at the door, they put a hat similar to Phil's on their head, though the green stripes were instead a seafoam green and various little jewels hung from the edges. Arbour looked back at Evbo, flashing a gentle smile. ]
"Evet roams the vents and primarily stays in one of two places... My room or the worker's room. He uses my room to collect his thoughts and to let his emotions out quietly without the worker seeing."
He replied once more. Bluntly, robotic. His breathing rhythmic as he just waited for his next command. His eyes not focused on anything in particular and his ears and tail made no movement. Perfectly still... Eerily still.
It seemed so unnatural.
[ They listened before idly nodding, seeming to hesitate before taking a step towards Ches. Their tail flicked behind them as they pinched his ear again, stepping back quickly before the clone could lash back. Once they were sure his control had returned, they sighed under their breath, their shoulders sinking. ]
"Return to your work, 45. I will let you off with a warning this one time. Don't let this happen again - am I understood?"
[ The idle thumping of their heart in their chest. That was all the being could hear as they stumbled through the Federation's walls, moving as quickly as their disoriented feet could carry them as the world spun on an axis around their head. Desperate to find one familiar face as the ache of pressuring command codes in their programming threatened to take hold of them again any second - but they had one person they needed to see first. One person they needed to apologize to. Properly. ]
[ Hands shaking with nausea and fatigue, Arbour lifted their badge to the scanner, the door to the clone's room clicking open with a short beep in confirmation. The Ches clone had told them he'd be here. All they had to do is pray he'd be here now. They don't have long... ]
"Evet?"
- @watching-the-signs
It had been almost 3 and a half weeks. Complete radio silence from Evet, and in turn he hadn't been able to see Thoth. Ches got compromised. He spent every waking minute... Trying to make the antidote. He hadn't slept. He didn't care about himself.
He was running on autopilot. Shutting his emotions off, just to work despite knowing his plan was fucked. The head person or something knew he was out here making an antidote to counteract the potion used on Evbo.
He was only in Ches's old room to try and find something, anything that could help. But... He often came in this room to cry, silently. He couldn't risk Thoth seeing him in that state. He couldn't risk anyone to see him like that.
This time was no different. Coming in, to just... silently cry as he was feeling helpless. But he didn't expect to be caught, let alone... let alone for a figure from his past, a certain auncle to wind up finding him.
There was a moment of hesitation as he brought his makeshift iron dagger out. Prepared to kill the other if they tried to do anything. If they even tried to take him, No... He'd die trying.
"... Looks like Ches told you what I go by now."
His voice was cold as red eyes glared at his Auncle. He did well to mask the trembles. Not allowing the sigh of weakness to be seen by the other. His body low to the ground. All his usual green was red. It was something the Federation did to him. Make him stand out more in the experiments.
[ The being watched as he brandished his blade, their heart aching right alongside the crushing pressure they found their ribs under. Knowing that the knives of pain in their very bones weren't from any natural cause - no, this was the result of their very code being twisted and bent to the Federation's will. It took everything in Arbour's power to keep on their feet as Evet addressed them, their arms around their chest in some feeble prayer of distraction from the misery the subconscious fighting put them in. ]
"... He didn't exactly get much of a choice."
[ Their ears flicked as the head of the potions and serums department looked down, giving a low sigh as their tail twined around their ankle. They hated using command codes. Hated them. They always felt like such a violation of free will - but did they really have a choice in that moment...? ]
"I wanted... I wanted to talk to you, Evet. I wanted... to apologize."
His eyes threatened to cry, but he didn't make any movement, just moving to look at the prayer charm.
"You... You were speaking with so much fondness of... of your life before being forced to be here instead... instead in... in the life you wanted.."
He spoke quietly, barely letting his voice go above a whisper. He was trying to bottle his emotions, to not upset his Auncle even... if he felt he failed already.
"I'm sorry.. I-I don't... I don't want to distract you from... from the magic soup. I don't want it to burn.."
He moved to leave the embrace, holding out the prayer charm once more so his Auncle could take it. Never moving his head up. He had a tendency to bottle how he feels up. The feeling of loneliness and the feeling of him being a bother were the biggest things in felt in his day to day life. When he wasn't with any of his brothers at their homes, he was all by himself at the main home when his parents were out (which was a lot of the time) with no one but a video camera to watch over him. He couldn't impede on his siblings' lives even if he was young. There wasn't any other adults to watch him.
A ten year old like himself... shouldn't be feeling all these feelings. He should be enjoying his life, but in this brief moment.... those feelings came flooding back to him. All he could do was just try his best to prevent his tears from flowing.
Their heart ached as they watched Evbo hold their prayer charm out to them, stepping back slightly when he pulled away. They could see themself in his eyes. That want to be loved, but refusing to let it come at a cost. Knowing in their heart - whether truth or lie - that the people around them were far, far more deserving of happiness than they could ever prove themself to be.
Though they hesitated for a moment, Arbour gently took back the charm, looping the thread back through the belt holsters on their jeans before looking back at the boy. What could they even say? They knew the mindset he was in all too well - having lived it themself. Their tail swayed as the being gently patted his head, deciding to instead opt for a distraction.
"Tell you what. Why don't you come with me to forage for some new ingredients? I have a new potion I've been wanting to try out - I think it'll help with those awesome parkour moves of yours."
His mouth moved on it's own, his voice monotone as his face remained neutral.
"He prefers the name Evet... He wears a gas mask to prevent the gas of the federation to wipe his memories and he escaped deletion... He is living in one of the worker's rooms... possible love connection... He also broke into my simulation of Parkour Civilization for Subject 45... He spoke with the Parkour Villain, to get the stolen property of Dr. Arbour translated as it was written in a language he didn't or couldn't remember. He's been working on an antidote of the serum used on subject 45 but has been having difficulties. I have heard him saying 'If only Auncle Arbour were here,' implying he didn't know the book he stole full of data was made by Dr. Arbour... His goal is to keep his other selves safe and break out of The Federation as soon as he could with them, the worker, and he expressed bringing me as well. He knows the communicator that manifested in Subject 45's inventory is his original communicator from 3 years ago. I never found out how that manifested in Subject 45's inventory. I assume it was via the Godhood... But Subject 65 AKA, Evbo/Evet is still in The Federation building."
After he was finishing divulging the information he went still again. Standing perfectly straight, and neutral.
Cucurucho listened intently to the words Ches spoke, feeling none to pleased at the fact the other had become a variant of the other Ches's. No he would have to deal with this one.
"The data is… most enlightening. Now, 45, a simple inquiry: why extend assistance to Subject 65? And more curiously… how did such contact occur, given the distance between your respective simulations within The Federation?"
"He snuck into the simulation while I was still within it, I hadn't died at that point in the simulation. He told me that when I died to find him outside of the simulation. Implying he knew more than he let on. I thought he was Subject 45 at first if not for his sweater and eyes not having green but red instead... The day after I had full control of my body as I left the Simulation to do my Observation duties. Something in me told me to go seek him out. That is how I came in contact with him."
Ches replied at the question. His words were precise, leaving no room for emotion. Them having been turned off as his true self was suppressed by this obedient shell.
Cucrucho listened quietly before moving to take Ches's communicator, cutting off contact from Evet, Seaworker (Unknowingly), and from the random pop-ups. Turning away and towards Arbour, he pocketed the communicator.
"Insight acknowledged. Compliance from 45 has been logged. Arbour, as the identifying party, protocol allows you full discretion regarding this Clone’s outcome. Proceed as you see fit."
He simply said before taking his leave from the department. Having gained enough information to deal with the little mouse running through The Federation's vents.
Their ears twitched slightly as they listened to Ches speak, letting out a low hum as they watched Cucurucho take the clone's communicator. After hesitating for a moment, the being looked towards Ches, their tail flicking idly behind them as they crossed their hands behind their back.
"What do you know about Evet's whereabouts? Where he is within the Federations?"
It was a risky ask, but- it was worth a shot. At least while the command codes weren't pressing quite as hard against them.
"Oh..."
He went slightly quiet as he had watched and listened. Looking down ever so slightly, even though he normally would look up at his Auncle's patting of his head.
"Do... Do you wish they didn't do that... even... even if it meant you wouldn't of met me? Or... Or Phil?"
His voice was quiet as he spoke. His hand gripping it slightly. He always felt like he was a bother to people, that people would be better off if he wasn't there... But he always tried to bury that thought down.
"I'm sorry... that they threw you away or... or that you... you were forced to... Forced to deal with me. I'm sorry."
He merely whispered the apologies. Trying almost in vain to keep from crying.
Their ears perked at Evbo's broken words, shortly shaking their head and pushing the bitter memories aside. They stepped forward a bit, gently pulling their nephew into an embrace.
"Hey, hey, hey. I wouldn't trade you for the world, kiddo. You mean a lot more to me than some God. Leaving me behind was their choice - I'm happier here, with you and Phil, than I ever would've been there."
Arbour's voice was soft as they reassured him, even if it made their chest ache to sugarcoat their words in an attempt to make him feel better. They were happy here, sure - but losing them had felt like the loss of a life. A pure, happy life.
Over and over,
We've fucked ourselves over,
And under, and under,
We do it again.
@3v60
"What do you mean-"
He started, his voice raising before he was restrained. His body trying to break out of the other's grip. He couldn't understand what was happening. What changed in the conversation?!
"He-Hey let me go! What are you doing?!"
He stammered out before his left ear was pinched. His struggling stopping almost immediately as he just fell quiet and still. The anger on his face dissipating as the action registered something in him.
"Ahhh… Evidence indicates 45 was present. Gratitude, Arbour, for your… effective intervention."
A robotic esque voice spoke from behind the two of them. Ches's body still, awaiting a command as he was in this state. A state he didn't know was even programmed into him.
Arbour's ears twitched as they let go of Ches, allowing him to stand properly as they moved to stand in front of him once more. Their gaze flicked to the other with a low hum.
"Not a problem, Cucurucho. If I may, though, I have some questions for this one before he returns to his work."
The worker's gaze fell back on the clone before them, taking note of the absent look in his eyes. As much as they hated taking advantage of command codes, what other choice did they have in that moment? Letting a defective clone get away, loose in the Federation? They could've lost their rank.
"Since you seem to be the knowledgeable type... Tell me what you know about the missing Evbo clone."
I wonder how Philza and Martyn are dealing with Evbo being missing, I wonder how they'd feel about you being the reason he hasn't come back
The being paused as the message on their communicator, their shoulders tensing for a second. They seemed guilty until the flicker of green sparked in their eyes for a second, the look fading to indifference as they slipped the device back into their pocket and turned on their heel.
"I'm afraid I don't know what you're talking about."
"Easy to do when you use to work on The Free Bird project before being moved to simulations... Especially if a certain crow avian was a subject."
"Tell me, am I wrong in anything I said?"
He saw the flicker, thinking nothing of it. He just carefully watched the other. Waiting in earnest for their response.
"I don't think I am, and I find it fascinating that I'm now in control of one of the subjects from Free Bird's youngest sibling... Tell me, why is it that The Federation wishes for control over their family. All their missing is Martyn no?"
Arbour's ears drew back in irritation, biting back their short-tempered instincts in favor of keeping up the level-headed facade. Turning the situation over in their head, the worker huffed lowly, a piece of information breaking through their thought process as their eyes flicked up to his ears for the briefest second.
"I don't think that information is for you to know, 45."
Within the blink of an eye, the former priest had quickly stepped behind Ches, their arms wrapping tightly around his chest in an act of restraint as their tail pulled his ankles into a tight loop. Knowing they had mere milliseconds before the shock would wear off and the clone would start to struggle, Arbour let one arm fall from their hold on him, reaching up and quickly pinching his left ear.
