So Trump as a Sulla analogue is an easy sell, but we don't seem to have a Marius. The role of Marius in this slapstick production seems to be played by a rotating cast all like sharing the energy or wtfe. Screaming and pissing and weeping like babies over fairly unremarkable economic reforms is the Republican Party's favorite hobby and that's pretty Sullan so for a while back in like 2021 I thought Joe Biden and/or Kamala Harris might be the Marius just by eliminateskies but they both evaporated like a fart in the wind and I couldn't see either of them swinging all that much extralegal military authority. I don't think Joe Biden ever saw more than 1 or 2 eagles at one time.

Back when I was a weird little girl I was always the type of weird little girl who'd excessively romanticize the barbarians and view Roman civilization as synonymous with political corruption and cultural extinction and she was right so this is all par for the course tbh
i already had many qualms with the psych industry - as someone who's been consistently interacting with mental healthcare professionals since i was 11, and has been involuntarily committed several times - but taking college psych classes has only made me more anti-psych, because now i can see in real time how psych students are being trained to repeat the harms both myself and countless others have suffered at the hands of the industry.
i am constantly being reminded of the dichotomy that exists in psychology between the "mentally well" healthcare provider and the "mentally ill" patient, who are seen as diametrically opposite to one another. you see it when textbook authors (who are themselves clinicians) speak to who they assume the reader is:
trying to appeal to the aspiring psych professional (who they presume to be neurotypical) by othering autistic people and sensationalizing autism, saying it "undermines the traits that make us human"... several textbooks i've read have made it very obvious that, despite being a psych student, i am not the reader they are speaking to.
i see the dichotomy in the number of psych students who still use autistic as an insult, or make jokes about something being "so OCD" or "so bipolar". i see it in how, as soon as i try to explain something "as a person with OCD", the professor is taken-aback, and students get uncomfortable. even if i am surely not the only psych student in any given class with a mental health condition, it is taboo for me to be open about it, as it violates what a psych provider is supposed to be.
i also see how psych as a discipline fails to be critical of itself and its practices. in my abnormal psych class, we are made to unquestioningly memorize and regurgitate the dsm-5, without even engaging with criticisms of it. and in several of my classes we are made to memorize and reproduce classical freudian theory (e.g. "write about this case using freud's concepts") without ever touching the ongoing harm that classical psychoanalysts partake in (against incest victims), simply because he is a "foundational theorist". would an anthropology professor ask you to analyze something like race scientist johann blumenbach would, without speaking to the harms of race science? no, because anthropology (from what i've observed) actively denounces these theorists, something that psych fails to do. they even fail to denounce evolutionary psych despite it being largely pseudoscientific.
students are taught to take the psych discipline as holy gospel, to see themselves as the arbiters of mental health, and to never engage with the "mentally ill" as equals, lest they be made aware of attitudes and practices that they need to change.
Pet peeve of the day is the way many fiber artists use "carpet wool" as a catchall derogatory term for any wool that is coarse and scratchy, with the implied meaning carpet wool=garbage wool. That is not what carpet wool is.
Carpet wool, as the name implies, is a term for the wool from sheep specifically, intentionally bred for centuries to produce wool that is ideal for carpets (historically meaning rugs or, less often, heavy outer blankets, not just carpet like the modern stretched kind stapled to the floor.)
The ideal fiber for an item that is going to be put on the floor and walked on needs to be durable and easy to clean, therefore each strand needs to be long, relatively thick (yes, that means coarse,) and not prone to easily felting.
What it DOESN'T need to be is particularly "soft." The long fibers will make a smooth enough surface to not irritate the soles of your feet and you're not generally going to be wearing a rug right against very sensitive skin all day where you can feel the prickly ends. "Carpet wool" breeds, also known as longwool breeds, have wool fibers that perfectly meet those criteria.
A rug made from wool from a hair sheep or some meat sheep that is coarse but also brittle and short is going to wear out and fall apart ao quickly it's not worth the effort to make it. Therefore, despite being coarse and "scratchy," it is NOT CARPET WOOL. Use that for stuffing pillows or compost it for fertilizer.
A fine, soft, Merino rug is also going to be a felted, pilled, worn-out mess in such a short time it's not going to be worth the effort to make. Save that for a beautiful lace scarf that's going to be directly against the skin of your neck all day. Judging by what's best for rugs, Merino is actually the "garbage" wool.
Anyway, humans spent millenia developing different fibers for different applications, and also words mean things and don't mean other things. Can we please stop calling Lincoln or Wensleydale wool "garbage" because it makes scratchy socks and can we also stop calling Katahdin or Dorper hair "carpet wool" please.
Also, the sheep that grow the wool are absolutely rocking the look.
Imagine telling these lovely Wensleydale ladies their hair isn't glam!
I share this peeve - and I may go awandering far afield in a highland meadow later - but I have opinions about opinions.
A fiberist who causally dismisses any breed for its inherent genetic qualities is an indication of inexperience. A novice doesn't have enough data to make an acurate judgment on anything other than their preference. Which, we all have preferences, but being enthusiastically loud about our preferences doesn't make us right.
In a culture fixated on the seductive qualities of soft, our western idiom has been coddled into the false equation of soft=best leading to the unsustainable environment nightmare of microfibers. The first fail in that soft equation comes from comparing hand spun yarns with commercial yarns. The loud opinions tend to get ramped up here, especially when an novice hasn't reconciled the equation:
[Great Yarn = (characteristics of breed or breed blend + preparation method) ÷ spinning technique (± ply)] all influenced by fabrication method of the final project.
Now that☝️equation gets shit done!
Because even though wool is a multifaceted fiber -
It isn't a one-size-fits-all fiber. it's a spectrum of fiber solutions to a variety of situations & needs, producing both textile & non-textile uses
Yes - carpets & rugs are one of those needful situations that specific wools fulfill. However, the same breeds used reliably for industry also have functions in garments & home decor not associated with feet. And, to the experienced fiberist: you don't dismiss wool for not being softy-soft

As part of a rare breed study, I had the opportunity to spin an Old-World UK Herdwick.
The fleece was the same color of the stones in its native range. It was coarse, full of hair, & kemp. It was tough. The twisted single cut a groove my flyer's wood. The staple was 3-4" (7.5-10 cm) & it held twist perfectly even when spun super-fine.
Plied back upon itself it made a stable 2-ply lace weight.
Despite it being from one of the cutest sheep to grace the hard-knock fells - it was a beast of a fleece.
Our Guild chairperson called the rolags “Godzilla’s pubes” - and he wasn't wrong. It was akin to a natural steel wool pad.
Together, our Guild tried every preparation we knew.
We de-haired, hand carded, drum carded, hackled, & combed. Spun on wheels & hand spindles making singles, & multiple plies. The yarn was crocheted, knitted woven, needle felted, needle punched, & even used in nalbinding. It was deemed filler wool - not even worthy of rug making but the fleece was far to clean to compost.
And - alas - with the same fiber someone spun their sample as cobweb weight and made a square shawl/lap cover - maybe 40" by 40" (a meter square ). Because of the fibre characteristics it held its structure in an open lace that was beautiful. The charcoal gray was stunning - it caught the light here and there where the lighter shades of kemp and hair reflected. It was a most beautiful piece of work
And it is not soft. But it is very lightweight & warm.
And that combination is hard to find in commercial yarns.
The variety of textures in the fiber category of Wools is astounding. There just might be a wool for every need:
Cormo for baby layettes.
Alpaca for the cowl around your neck.
Merino for the colorwork sweater pattern from Ravelry
Shetland for mittens and hats.
Wensleydale socks that will wear well in boots and keep your feet warm.
Lincoln Long wool that - if spun as lace weight or cobweb will make an heirloom lace baby blanket -
Or Herdwick . . . to make a lap warmer for someone whose circulation can't stand the weight of more than a sheet but still needs to stay warm.
All of these could be carpet wool - the last three being far superior & more durable to the task than the others - but they can also be much more.
Seriously. Don't discount a wool for being itself. Look at your skillset, add to your knowledge, try something new. Also - and i mean this - do a fucking breed study.
It genuinely pisses me off that pwhl players, who have worked insanely hard their entire lives to play professional hockey, aren't paid enough to own a house. Or paid enough to cover rent in basically every city that has a pwhl team. Or paid enough in general.
one of the most important things, perhaps the most important thing I have learned in my life is that nice people can fuck each other up in monstrous ways. people can be bone deep kind and loving and self reflective and still lash out under pressure. people can be earnestly neighbourly and charitable and hospitable and generous and still find themselves in situations where they become selfish. people can be well meaning and easygoing and gregarious and hold deep seated opinions that turn them into vicious little bullies under the right conditions. nobody is just one thing, and nobody stays one way. every person is a kaleidoscope and they will surprise you. you will surprise yourself. it's not a warning and it's not a judgement and it's not an excuse, and it's certainly not a reason to stop trying or to stop trusting. it is just a fact.
i say this with all my heart, from one person who cares about animal welfare to hopefully many others:
please take the term “factory farm” out of your vocabulary when discussing animal welfare
talking about the welfare of livestock and livestock production is incredibly important! all animals deserve to have the best welfare possible, regardless of if they’re going to end up on a plate or not
but the term “factory farm” does not actually discuss animal welfare in the way so many people seem to assume it does
for starters, “factory farm” is not an actual industry term. it doesn’t actually mean anything, because what constitutes a factory farm is completely subjective. you will never see the phrase “factory farm” in any kind of published research or official article because, again, it doesn’t mean anything
sure, the phrase definitely has connotations. and the connotation is the issue here. people use the term “factory farm” as a shorthand for… well, typically, “farming practice i don’t understand but think looks bad”
the term isn’t something neutral. it is specifically designed to create a negative image when you hear it. someone says “factory farm” and most people imagine large amounts of animals kept in bad condition
the key here: large amounts of animals
the size of a farm does not dictate the welfare of the animals on it. there are plenty of large farms with hundreds, thousands of animals that take stellar care of their livestock. there are small farms with only a couple animals that live horrible lives
the size of a farm is not the issue when it comes to animal welfare, but rather the practices used on the farm. sometimes they do go hand in hand, yes. there are some practices that are only necessary because of the amount of animals present
but say that
there are other terms that are actually industry terms that work better for these scenarios. try “conventional farming” “industrialized farming” “commercialized farming”. these actually have meanings that you can then jump off of into talking about animal welfare practices on these farms
“factory farming” is just a term used to paint farming in an entirely negative light, when what actually makes a farm have good or bad welfare depends on so many other things

"What if we find a way to keep fetuses alive outside the womb" that already exists, it's called the NICU and it took decades of advancements in medical science and technology. it takes an entire team equipped with state of the art technology to keep a fetus alive outside the womb. because it cannot perform basic life-supporting functions like breathing on its own. this isn't an anti-NICU post tbc. I'm actually considering the nicu as an option after going back to school because I really like fetuses and babies, I think they're neat. but the fact remains that it takes an entire team of doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists, and more to keep a micropreemie alive. and most abortions occur even before the point that it becomes possible at all. "viable" doesn't mean ready to be born. it means it is possible to keep it alive thanks to medical science developed by the same "abortionists" whose executions you're always calling for.
also, it's not an "after birth abortion" when they "let" micropreemies die, it's fucking hospice care.
absolutely. and to add onto this, i was a nicu baby, and i was a late term abortion. when i was still in the womb i was dying inside my mother, so they had to induce her extremely prematurely to save our lives. there was a very high chance of me dying because they took me outside of the womb before they knew if i could survive on my own, but the chances of me and my mother dying if i stayed inside her were 100%.
the procedure to remove me is medically and legally a late term abortion. i was aborted, and it saved my life. if they hadn’t aborted me, my mother and i would both be dead, my siblings would have been left with a dead mother, and i would have never even gotten a chance to live a single day. and now, people are being denied this procedure and dying because it’s literally an abortion!! mothers and their babies are being killed because their doctors are not allowed to perform life-saving abortions.
on the same note, my sister was recently denied an abortion. which is to say, cleaning out the already dead fetus after she had a miscarriage from a wanted pregnancy. they refused treatment unless the DEAD fetus was actively killing her, because the procedure to remove it is medically and legally an abortion. they basically said to her “come back when you’re dying of an infection or sepsis or something, until then you just have to bleed out.” my sister could have died from this, people HAVE died from being denied abortions after having a miscarriage. if she was one of these people, my sister would have been dead, my mother would have to live the rest of her life without her daughter, and my nephew would have had to live the rest of his life without a mother.
sick and tired of people saying to me “yeah, but that’s different. you can’t really call those procedures an abortion, they’re not really an abortion.” yes it is. it’s an abortion. any procedure that entails unnaturally removing a fetus and/or baby from the womb before they’re sure it can survive outside of it is an abortion. if it wasn’t, people wouldn’t be being told that, sorry! we can’t do that! you’ll have to come back when you’re already dead. i was aborted, my mother had an abortion when she was pregnant with me, my sister needed an abortion after she had a miscarriage. all of these things are ABORTIONS! and now mothers and babies are being killed, murdered by these anti-abortionist fuckers and the laws they put in place to “save and protect poor, innocent lives!”
