sonya: back then, i didn't really know much. i just knew that i grew up in a family where the only man was my grandpa, everyone else was women. so for me, it always felt normal. i think i only started to realize and understand it around grade 6. at that time, i would call almost everyone who raised me "mom". even my mom's sister is trans, so that's what she's called to me. to me, it all just felt so normal. but if you ask me when i truly understood what the relationship between my mom and her partner was, it was definitely when i got older. if there's something i want to share, it's that i never thought it was strange at all. growing up in this kind of family actually made me feel free. i never felt like i was missing anything. because honestly, everyone filled in every part of my life. they always let me do what i wanted, gave me space to explore and go for things. i even ended up closer to my mom's partner than to my mom when i was younger because my mom was always working and didn't really like staying at home. so my mom's partner would be the one driving me to school every morning, and even now, when she has to go to work, she still asks if i need a ride. since my mom doesn't drive, it's always been her partner who drives me everywhere.
