Final Character: The Lost Spirit
WHO Aggrieved: The lost spirit has a strong sense of aggrievement, they resent the human race for the enslavement and killing off of the spirits. The lost spirit remains within the human world seeking out revenge. Erudite: The lost spirit is characterised to have an all knowing mind, the spirit’s mind contains every living form’s wisdom and keys to life. The spirit is essentially the ultimatum of existence. Eutierria: The lost spirit is “one with the Earth”. Much like the other spirits of it’s race they belong to what they call “the good Earth”. All their knowledge and power is devoted to the betterment of the planet and existence.
WHY Tyrranised: The humans have completely wiped out the Spirit Race, this last spirit has been enslaved due to it’s knowledge. It now despises the human race and has escaped to survive. Vagabond: To survive the spirit wanders around without a home trying to find someone to help it’s cause. Survivor: The spirit is the last remaining of it’s kind. It’s completely alone and trying to find an ally.
WHERE Elysium: Elysium is the realm where the spirit is originally from, the humans wiped out all the spirits and blocked off the finals spirit’s way home. Village: The village is the home of the humans, it’s falling apart due to overuse of resources. Crossroads: The spirit is at an emotional crossroads, it cares for the humans and wants them to succeed but after what they did to the spirit race, the last spirit wants revenge.
WHAT Eidolon: The spirit is an Eidolon, a projection of both life and death. It is the reason it was the only survivor of it’s kind. Geo-Kinetic: The spirit’s powers revolve around the manipulation of earth and nature, the humans enslaved it for this power. Martyr: The spirit race were martyred for their beliefs and power, the humans thought that the spirits were too powerful and wanted them gone.
Explorer Analysis
The explorer is a lonely astronaut lost in space trying to find a way back to their home. The explorer is generally represented deep purples & navys, some light yellows and whites. Grey space suits, nostalgia, feelings of missing something. Hands reaching out into nothing, planets & stars. The conflict surrounding the explorer is that they left on a solo mission and ended up getting lost. The explorer is now going from planet to planet trying to find home.
WHO: The Explorer is a member of a human family who was sent on a mission to find planets that are inhabitable for humans. The mission goes wrong and now the explorer is lost in space and is looking for their home planet.
WHAT: The explorer doesn’t have any recognisable facial features as their completely covered by their space suit. The Aesthetic used is Retro-Futurism, as the group agreed it best represented the character.
WHERE: The setting is outerspace as the explorer is hopping planet to planet to try to find earth and their family. Would like to emphasize the feeling of being lost so will try to focus on making the explorer seem small.
WHY: The human race are trying to move to another planet so the explorer is sent on a solo mission to try and find inhabitable planets. Unfortuantely the explorer is sent off course and is now lost and trying to find their way home.
Spirit Guide Analysis
The spirit guide is old and wise beyond human years, it holds knowledge that many wish they could possess. The spirit guide is symbolised by the moon and stars, silver, fern fronds, maternal energy & flute music. The spirit guide faces conflict through the townspeople. Over time they have lost belief in the spirit guide, they no longer make an effort to preserve the land. The spirit guide is crying out to the townspeople to accept its help before it's too late.
WHO: Incredibly old spirit, linked to the earth and life. The spirit hold’s knowledge on longevity and prosperity. The people who came before the latest town inhabitants used to worship the spirit guide now it has been cast out.
WHAT: Aesthetic wise it is similar to Kindred (click link for more details) from the League of Legends franchise. The spirits powers revolve around geo-kineticism and healing.
WHY: The townspeople currently residing in the spirit’s area have overused all the resources and have sent the town into a downwards spiral. They laughed off the rules put in place by the previous generations to work with the spirit guide because the newer townspeople don’t believe it exists.
WHERE: The town is going to be a small town/village in a very forest based community. The idea is that it’s rural and has to be self sufficient in order to prosper.

Design Bias - TCCP
https://www.nyfa.edu/nyfa-news/gender-inequality-in-film-infographic-by-nyfa-updated-in-2018.php#.X0i7umczaw4
My point of interest in technology is in the film and media industry. It’s on of the biggest information spreading industries and it has large amounts of design bias. I’m particularly interested in researching the inequality of women in the media industry and how they are designed to be perceived in the finished media products. The New York Film Academy did a large study of women’s representation in film, they found that even though women buy half of the amount of tickets sold to cinemas, only 30.5% of speaking characters are women, only 12% of films featured a balanced cast and the ratio of male to female actors is 2.3:1.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/5050
The BBC are tackling the issues of underrepresentation and inequality in media by creating the 50:50 project. Encouraging all BBC lead shows to have an equal gendered cast and creative crew to ensure that correct representation is shown in their media.
TCCP Discussions Week 3: Internet of Things
Image 1: Body I would love to design glasses for hard of hearing people to wear when seeing films, tv shows, stage productions etc. that project the transcript as subtitles for them. The glasses would be connected to an app that they can scan a qr before viewing and it would then turn the transcript into subtitles to send to the glasses.
It’s connection to IoT is the way technology can connect humans together instead of forcing us apart due to things we can’t control.
Image 2: Smart Home I would love to design a system for people who want to become more sustainable in their home lives by growing their own harvest. It would be an app that tells users what plants need to be watered, what plants are ready to be picked, what is and isn’t in season for planting etc, making it easier for new gardeners to start their own small produce garden.
It’s connection to IoT is how we can create a network between things that at one point could not connect whatsoever.
Image 3: Smart City My smart city choice is the COVID Tracker app the NZ government have in place right now to help with contact tracing for potential covid cases and the safety of the public.
The connection to IoT is how reliant we are on technology to keep us safe.
TCCP Discussions Week 2: Motionsavvy UNI
1. The cultural context of this work is tackling the language barrier between deaf and hearing people. Motionsavvy created a tool that translates sign language to spoken words and also spoken words to text.
2. Camera, tablet, voice recognition software and translation software.
3. Tailoring to a gap in the market, creativity for societal benefit.
TCCP discussions week 1: Hayleigh’s Cherished Charms
1. The cultural context of this image is the deaf community and it’s struggles. A young girl that goes to a school for the deaf noticed a lot of students were embarrassed and ashamed of their hearing aids and cochlear implants. Hayleigh decided to make charms and “bling” to decorate with and bring happiness to a socially taboo technology.
2. The technologies are hearing aids and cochlear implants
3. Learning a new craft, using creativity to change perceptions

Mock Garment Arrival
We were given the mock garment from Gordon Fraser in the TDL today it’s black cotton yarn knitted using the knitting machines. Tried it on immediately to test movement and feeling of the fabric. Need to know how to keep it comfortable for the models in WOW if we manage to get in.
Measurements of Garment:
- Bust 87cm
- Waist 68cm
- Hips 97cm
- Shoulder to fingertip 80cm
- Neck to ground 160cm
- Fingertips to ground 80cm
- Neck 34cm
- Hoop base (aprox) 120cm
Changes to measurements we need to make:
- Shoulder to fingertip 90cm
- Fingertip to ground 110cm
- Possibly open fingers on the gloves if it’s possible.
Current feedback on this dress is that it’s more spooky than space themed due to how dark it is and the freely moving fingers. We are yet to tether the fingers to the skirt so hopefully that changes the opinion of the dress. We would also like to put a collar or neck ruffle on the neck of some sort it looks too “comfortable” to be a space dress.
Comparing sketches for feedback
Went around class asking everyone for their favourite design, why they think it relates to space, what would they add/change to their top favourites.
“Thomas: Ciara’s shard debris and ring designs and my blue satellite path design, personally stood out to him most
Jordan: Ciara’s shard debris design, for same criteria
Ciara: shard debris, blue satellite path and Victorian solar cells
Max: shard effect
Other wearable group x4 people:Agreed on blue satellite path, Victorian solar cells and Ciara’s ring design
Charles’ Feedback:
- Find balance between arty and literal (doesn’t have to be one or other)
- Make miny models to prototype
- Transform? Am personally making designs that fit space debris as opposed to making something that has to transform to fit this category, don’t want it to have a gimmick/transform for the sake of it
- Do surveys- Find out what people would change to improve garment
2 more people:
Ciara’s shards, my net effect
- conveys issues & best art pieces
One feels Ciara’s shard dress idea has more depth, but is not sure if the idea being immediately obvious or not is a good or bad thing
Covered all bases with range of designs
Liked blue satellite paths, but missing depth (agree as felt was simple concept more about idea behind it, was surprised with how many people liked it)
Hard to survey with so many options effectively, as different groups would fixate on different options as a group instead of as individuals
Time consuming to explain each option each time, also need to test 3D aspects of designs. Think having too large a range of designs and ideas makes it difficult for them to be accurately assessed.
2nd years Kaitlin & Tiger:
- Net idea makes think of space junk without explanation of what concepts are beforehand, therefore shows idea most clearly
- Kaitlin likes blue lines idea before and after learning reason why, liked explanation
- Surprisingly both like tube design which no one had commented on (wrong choice colours), thinks represented space as well as Victorian design
Patricia
Looks like solar panels, didn’t associate with space debris
Ciara’s shard design makes think of space debris most”

1/4 scale modelling
1/4 scale modelling worked on with sophie. focusing in on favoured designs from our feedback, sophie’s string cage design and my shard/spikes design.
Feedback from these designs:
- spikes design reminds people of star wars/star trek
- string design doesn’t look as strong as the sketch as we only have wool right now,
- classmates like the idea of netting being used in the garment somehow. (maybe knitting?)
- solar panels/button pad make designs more space themed
Sketches round 2
Taken from user feedback + max’s sketch, I formed some sketches more towards what people associate with space debris/junk.
Some images I was inspired by:
Orbital ring of satellites, and where their connections direct to. Used in design one as a halo around the waist creating a cage effect, could use a hoola hoop to make this.
Long armed satellite solar panels. Used in all 3 designs. Design one and large shoulder pads, designs 2 & 3 as a large cage skirt with cracks and broken pieces to symbolise that it’s junk.
Max’s Processing Sketch
- Drag and drop interactive sketch for audience members
-Audience members more often then not made longer dresses or more exaggerated “scary shapes”
-We have limited resources right now, but will be adding more to the sketch come time
-While we have testers make these we then have them look at our sketches and tell us if our sketches match the idea they were trying to put across
-Patricia drew out (pictured below) her version of her processing sketch (pictured above)
