Plotting Kanaloa

Born in Hanalei, Hawaii, Kalani had no other choice than to love the sea. Very early on he got his first own surfboard and never stopped riding the waves since. Eventually the half hawaiian, half chinese man became a professional surfer. What nobody knows though: the water loves him just as much as he loves the water. Kalani and the sea have a very special relationship, due to his great grandfather being a descendant of Kanaloa.

I've known you for ages, since the beginning, or only for a little bit. It doesn't matter because with you, time never matters. With you it's like the whole world stops for a hot minute. Whether we have the deepest of deep talks which really helps me sort my thoughts, the most shallow conversation that allows me to just be, not having to perform, or making plans to do the most mundane things therefore giving me a sense of a normal everday life. Every little bit helps and every little facet of our friendships is appreciated. You are appreciated. You mean something to me, something that cannot be put into words. Something inexplicable for we don't talk much, yet I trust you and value our friendships. You are the ones I know will be there even if we haven't talked in months. You're the ones I know will listen if I ever asked you to. You don't care whether I'm bubbly and full of energy, or just quiet and sad. You don't treat me any different, you don't treat me like I need to be put in bubble wrap. You're giving me a sense of normality and for that I am beyond grateful. You may not think that you do much, but it's more than I could explain. Just know that you did and do your fair share in getting me back on track and that without you a lot of things would've been way harder.

Neither of you have been with me from the start, but either of you could've been. You've grown close to me, so much I couldn't even imagine life without you anymore. You stood by me even though you had so many reasons not to - other people, conflicts of interest, mistrust. Yet you stayed and that means more to me than I ever might be able to put into words. You might think you're too cold, too emotional, too difficult, too boring, too much, too insecure. But you're not. Not at all. You are steady, you are reliable, you are warm. You are trusted, appreciated and loved. Your sharp minds are one of a kind - funny because all three of you have such. You approach things, problems, like no one I know and completely different than I would. And exactly that is what makes it so interesting, so entertaining. You are making me curious, you are making me question not just myself but my view on things and also the actions of others. You are making me see beyond. Without you, I probably would've drowned in self pity or my pain. But you're not just that - my sense of reason, a safe place for me to come to. You're also - each in her own way - so funny and glowing from inside. You have character, depth and a lot to offer to anyone who knows you. The same way you're helping me to stay afloat I will try my best to protect your light, your glow. Because you, you are bright little stars making the night sky sparkle.

You. You are incredible. You are what should be written right there in the dictionary next to the word "friend". Your company, your smile, your laugh. All the advice you have to offer, the hugs or the shoulder to lean on. The way you listen, they way you never judge. The way you still see me in a way I haven't seen myself in for a long time now. There are not nearly enough words to describe how much all of your support - whether it's words, touch or just being present when I need it most - means to me. I'm taking in all the light you shine on me and I'm working through my stuff with your help. With the warmth you give and the pain you take away. Everybody knows that you are good looking but when I say that you're so damn beautiful I don't mean your looks. I mean your hearts. Your souls. This may be a fucking low point in my life, maybe the lowest so far, but having you stand by my side makes it bearable. Makes it manageable. You have no idea how much you mean to me. How much your smiles mean to me. Seeing that you're still there, still able to enjoy life, motivates me and makes it so much easier to get back on track. Finding joy in the little things is possible because you show me that there is so much to be joyful about. Thank you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I love you.

The heat was merciless and Kalani couldn't really get a grip of any thought other than that he missed the breeze on the beach. The city was buzzing, the air outside was flimmering and the air conditioning in his best friends flat was working overtime. He groaned as he rolled over, his gaze shifting to the alarm clock next to the bed. Lazily he reached for it, turning it slightly to be able to look at it without having to lift his head. His hair was tied into a messy bun, his bare back was glowing in the sun that fell through the window. It was way too late to still be laying in bed. With a heavy sigh he gave it another thought, or tried to, then he sat up sluggishly. Not really ready to get up, not at all motivated to move. Yet he did. He adjusted his shorts. Those of which Anahera always told him he didn't need them - because why would any sane person be wearing clothes in this heat? A smirk tugged at the corner of his mouth, hearing her voice in his memory. The question in her words, the honest bafflement, the innocence in her voice, not really understanding why he wouldn't just walk around naked. She was so different from anybody he had ever met and maybe that was exactly the reason she became his best friend.

Still dressed, he wouldn't lose his pants no matter the heat, he left the bedroom they shared every time he went to visit Anahera. Looking for the Māori he searched the flat. The young woman was nowhere to be found - not until he looked at the balcony. There she was, sitting in the children's pool she bought some time ago and enjoying the cool water. Kalani smiled a little and decided to join. He refrained from creeping up to her since he knew she had a lot to carry already, and when he let himself sink into the water next to her, his best friend automatically scooted closer to him. Just as automatically his arm found his way around her shoulder and a little smile appeared on his lips when she placed her head on his chest. Since day once she was obsessed with listening to his heart beat.

Kalanis fingers were brushing through her hair when he felt a little movement. The woman had lifted one of her hands, the left one. Her nail polish was chipping on almost every finger. Only her thumb was not chipped. The one finger where upon the dark blue nail polish there was painted a little white heart. An equivalent heart was painted onto his own nail, not a white one but one in the same dark blue color of the nail polish Anahera was wearing. He felt her fingers touch something. His necklace. The artist was playing with it, absentmindedly. "You know...", she murmured after a few moments of silence. "The first time I met you, I had no idea you'd mean this much. To me, I mean. I... you're my best friend." Her voice quivered, she stumbled over her words a little bit and her cheeks got a rosy color. Kalani just smiled, his gaze falling upon the ring on her finger, matching to his necklace. As soft and light as a feather his fingers brushed over the little heart of the ring, then he held her whole hand and pressed it to his chest. "I know, Anahera. That's why I got us matching jewellery. Remember? Our souls are connected since the old days. Best friends back then, best friends now."

The smell of cherries filled the air and the water running was the only sound for a few moments. Then the sound of fabric rubbed against fabric echoed through the bathroom again. Kalani stood in the door frame, watching the petite woman trying to wash out the dark red stain from her shirt. She huffed and puffed in annoyance, while Kalani couldn't help but bite down on his lips to hide the smirk creeping onto his face. "Does it work?", he asked after a while. Carefully, trying not to sound too amused. Danbi shot him a look, much more of a glare. Her feisty side showing like this almost had him cackling. "No." Frustrated she turned off the tab, grabbed her shirt and threw it to the ground. "No, it doesn't! And I can't go out to eat in nothing more than a bikini top! I have nothing else to wear anymore, everything appropriate is in your damn washing machine!" She crossed her arms and it wouldn't have surprised the Hawaiian if she stomped her foot to the ground. She didn't - luckily so, because then he would've lost it and started laughing.

Instead, he stepped closer, placing his warm hands on her tiny and bare skinned shoulders. This alone let some of her anger fade away and the young woman pouted, her eyes glistening. Kalani knew better than to comment on that, fully aware of how so many people cried when angry or frustrated and not because they were sad and needed comfort. "Hey, how about I'll just give you one of my shirts?" The suggestion worked like magic. The pout on Danbis lips disappeared, it was replaced by something menacing yet honestly joyful. She blinked away her tears and gave a nod. "That sounds.. doable. Let's see what you have to offer. Your clothes sometimes really are a bit.. special. If you wear something." She nudged him softly before shaking off his hands, only to walk - no, march! - into his bedroom. Kalani followed her, sitting down on the edge of his bed. He had no problem with her going through his clothes, so he decided to just watch and let her choose anything she liked. Not that she would've let him pick something; she opened his closet without hesitation and like it was the most normal thing. The surfer started to think that maybe it was. Maybe that was just what their friendship looked like - this sense of it being a matter of course, the way they didn't hide a thing from each other, the bluntness between them. A small smile tugged at the corners of his mouth.

"Well? How do I look?" The question made him snap back to reality. Danbi had picked out a white shirt which was way too big on her. He chuckled. "You look like you stole one of your boyfriends shirts. How about I pick a white one, too, and we act like it's our anniversary? Maybe we'll get the dessert for free then?" He stood up, grabbed another one of his shirts and changed into it. While brushing off the folds he looked at Danbi again, realising how she was watching him. A wide grin on her face, the menacing look now fully present. "I like the way you think." She clapped her hands together once, then she left the room, calling for him to follow her. "Let's go catch some free dessert, Mr. Crazy!"

This week gave me a little boost. Lifted me up a little. Made me to actually really want to keep moving forward.

Whether it's just talking bullshit after listening to me, really listening, just being the strongest pillar (thanks Henry, really, I'd be so lost without you brother) and distracting me, or just deep talk about emotions and how we get each other ending with the proposition of a "Kal-Room" additionally to a guest room (Yel, have I told you you're crazy?). A drink with the most amazing talk I've had in a while, opening my eyes to things that I would totally see if it wasn't about me (you really did some magic there, Baylor) or face masks to just feel younger, better, more relaxed (even if you're almost bursting with that huge belly, Sadie, but maybe that's why you needed it as well). Not to forget being urged, coerced, whatever you want to call it, to come and join an outing on the beach with people I've never met (just because Anahera and Danbi wouldn't shut up about how they wanted me to come). I couldn't see it on the days those things were happening but now that this week is over... I honestly feel so much lighter. All of you did their part in lifting the weight off my shoulders and even though I didn't know I needed that, I obviously did. So thank you. Thank all of you. I appreciate you being in my life, being my friends, some even my family. You're amazing people, amazing human beings and meeting you probably was one of the greatest blessings I have ever received.

Kalani woke up in the middle of the night. The streets were quieter than a few hours ago when he went to bed, yet he could still hear cars passing by. Being in the city was so different than it was at home. He missed the crickets, he missed the sound of the waves washing up on the beach - and still, those city sounds had their own charm. For a few moments he just lay in bed, staring up at the ceiling and wondering. Wondering if it would be weird to creep out of the apartment and leave the door open, so he could get back in. Wondering if he could see the stars here. Wondering if he should just go back to sleep. But his dreams had been a mess for the longest time now and he for sure was not ready to dive back right in, so the surfer slowly got up. He wanted to see Seouls lights in the night, maybe some stars and then hopefully the sight of the city would make him think about something else.

Getting to the rooftop had not been the easiest thing but somehow he managed to do it. Now sitting in the dark of the night he stared down into the city and up into the sky. There actually were a few stars to be seen and Kalani felt a little bit more at home. He pulled his knees up to his chest and wrapped his arms around his legs, sinking deeper into his own thoughts than he intended to. Home. He was not just missing a place. He was missing people as well. Long lost friends as much as his current ones. He was wondering how they were doing, if he should be more present for them, more actively trying to make their lives better. Kalani was so deep in his own head that he didn't hear the footsteps approaching him. Carefully, as if scared to slip and fall, but with confidence at the same time as if they walked upon this roof countless times before. When the blanket hit his shoulders, he jumped. "Sorry, I didn't want to scare you." Danbis soft voice echoed through the night. It carried worry, even though there was a little giggle as well. "It's fine, I just didn't hear you coming", Kalani now said, settling into his position from before again, relaxing a little. "What are you doing up here? Shouldn't you be sleeping?" His question earned him a raised brow from the woman sheltering him for his visit in Korea. "And you?", she shot back, sitting down next to him. Kalani couldn't help but smile a little about the response. For a moment they sat in silence, then he carefully leaned in and nudged her shoulder softly. "No, really. What are you doing here?", he asked again, curiously. "I thought you'd like some company." Danbi nudged him right back, smiling at him in that soft manner she so rarely used. There was not much more to be said, so he just nodded.

For a while they sat in silence again, longer this time and even though the young hawaiian still lost himself in his thoughts from time to time, it was better. Her presence helped him to get a grip of a reality again and again and at one point he finally managed to enter the right state of mind to meditate. So he crossed his legs, sat up straight and closed his eyes. Thinking of the stars above their heads, thinking of the waves back at home. Time passed, the stars began to fade slowly and Danbi just sat next to him, half asleep. His breathing got slower, his heart rate dropped and a certain calm washed over him. One he had missed for a while now, one he welcomed back wholeheartedly. One he knew wouldn't last long, but at least he now had access to it again.
