Let us all start with a hearty "Fuck ICE" and a good chuckle because LMFAO... Jesse walked into that moment with a level of "FUCK THE AUTHORITIES" that played out so beautifully that it's worth doing a playback for.
Because where McKay is instantly worried the moment she sees them. Robby wants them gone, but he knows he has to play the game. He hates it but he has to. And Victoria's a little nervous just to be there when we see her but Jesse Van Horn does not give a single fuck about these men.
He makes his way through them. Not around. And not politely. Just slides between where these fucks are standing like some protective wall and tells them, the big one SPECIFICALLY, "I need those removed so I can check her vital signs".
Because Jesse has eyes on him from the moment he walked over because Jesse can spot a fucking problem.
And sure, they look equally shook that this man is talking to them like that, but here's the thing: It's not a question because he's not asking.
It's an order and while those chucklefucks can look at each other all day with their thumbs up their asses, he and Robby kind of close ranks for a moment. Jesse takes a seat, but Robby moves from the sidelines where he was watching them and I love that. Because Robby is standing guard, watching these men, but once Jesse is there, he uses that to close ranks a little with himself, Jesse, Victoria and Cassie all kind of forming an inner circle around her.
But even once he is seated, Jesse's eyes are back on them. Can't tell the look from the moment but you see, he's watching them again.
It's actually a really beautiful back and forth because the moment Jesse looks away to do his job and check her vitals, Robby is watching those pricks again.
But when Jesse gives her vitals (heart rate 110, pulse ox 98 so they're good), he gives Robby this look. Seriously watch his face because it does a lot in a little before he again forces these pricks to back up in the way he moves past them, but there's concern, but there's anger too. And he needs Robby to know that.
It also puts him on the big guy's radar because he watches to make sure Jesse is gone before refocusing.
And then we next see him, he's finishing up. He's leaving, but that mountain of fuckface storms over after Robby told him off and gets pissy. And Jesse could walk away, but the moment he clocks that man, he immediately stops and CIRCLES AROUND THIS MAN, READY TO BE A BARRIER!
He goes from being on that man's LEFT to being on his RIGHT so fast because Jesse is ready in a way no one else is because he's a 6ft white guy. Like it's too brief to gif (at 36:42 he pivots, then at 36:44 you can see him on the other side).
And that little one isn't doing shit to help or stop anything since I think he's their "not all ICE" attempt, LOL. But Jesse is cautiously between that man and his patient asking to just be allowed to get her a sling with Cassie. And when she cries out in pain because that man grabs her injured arm intentionally, Jesse is between them purposefully (hand over the man's grip on her while his other forearm is against his chest) in a heartbeat telling this man to stop because that fuck is hurting her.
And we don't see it, but Jesse yelling out in pain is the next thing we hear along with things falling. And we next see Jesse on the ground, hogtied, so we know Jesse was assaulted. Victoria probably got it on film since we see her with her phone out (along with others later), but I think it's safe to say Jesse didn't get to the ground on his own accord.
And aside from telling those pricks to get their hands off him, Jesse says in the most choked out way (because a man is actively kneeling on his back) "Robby, I didn't do shit". And Robby knows. Robby says he knows. And honestly, outside of protecting his patient, Jesse didn't do anything.
Note how Robby, I mean, he's talking to Jesse, but he is not looking at him even then. He refuses to look anywhere but at this man that has harmed one of his employee.
And again, credit to Robby, he's on it. He gives him the 'shut the fuck up' spiel, which Jesse nods to. It's so brief, y'all, but he nods. They make eye contact because Robby (OF ALL PEOPLE!) is searching for that eye contact to know Jesse is listening, and Jesse nods. Because he knows to shut up. Robby says so like he says he's gonna call the hospital lawyer about it.
Then goes back to staring straight ahead like this is just another nuisance in a long line of them (and it is), muttering something I can't make out. Just like how Dana is immediately at his side once they start moving him looking all kinds of harried and ready to cry a little that is her nurse and she can't protect him. She can't control the situation.
All this to say that was never just that ONE moment at the end with Jesse stepping up. He was on the defense from the jump, my little punk rock prince. And I love that for him.
But more than that, I love the shock on McKay's face because it hints at how wrong the moment is? Like she's been arrested. Probably not the biggest cop fan, but even still, last season she was in this exact position. But something about this moment is enough to shock her to her bones (maybe Jesse isn't that guy, maybe... like the sound implies, he was assaulted for trying to help, maybe it's just the shock of seeing it happen to someone else), but it's that look on her face that tells you... everything about the moment, really.
Also, shout out to Ned because we all joke about Jesse being the most expressive motherfucker in the Pitt and he tends to say he's just the numbers guy (he reads the numbers in a way that conveys the situation) but... much like with him coming between Frank and Robby during the sepsis patient, he's conveying a whole lot in a matter of literal seconds once again.
They should let him speak more provided Jesse doesn't get fired (praying that he is part of a nurses union and they come through for him, if Robby doesn't personally pick him up from jail after his shift at this rate because Robby may).
✰ summary: you take your toddler into the E.R after having a mild allergic reaction and run into your husband Dr. Abbot✰
✰ pairing: Jack Abbot x wife!reader ✰
✰ wc: 1k ✰
✰fluff established relationship, descriptions of an allergic reaction.
not beta read i proof read but may have still missed some errors. this was a dream and i had to write about it. purely self indulgent girl dad abbot <3
"I wasn't sure if this was an ER or urgent care situation, so I just came here because the urgent care was further?" You explain to Dr. Mohan as you sit with your daughter on your lap, her head resting against your chest as Dr. Mohan starts her examination.
Looking into her nose and eyes with the light, listening to her breathing with the stethoscope.
"No worries. So you said she had some strawberries and had an allergic reaction. Was this her first allergic reaction?" Dr. Mohan asks.
"Yeah, it was. I gave her children's Benadryl one tablet after noticing her lips beginning to swell, and she saw hives after about 30 minutes."
Dr. Mohan nods as she continues her examination. "Okay, well, we can monitor her here, make sure the Benadryl is working. I can get you a prescription for an EpiPen."
"Thank you, Dr. Mohan." You tell her as she leaves the room.
You wait, making sure Lilly's allergic reaction is under control. Robby notices you and enters the room.
Dr. Robby comes in, giving you a sympathetic smile. "Hey. Heard you stopped in? Is everything okay?"
You nod as Lilly groans, cranky. Tired from the Benadryl, but too uncomfortable in the E.R., with the lights and the noise, to sleep.
"Yeah, we're all good. Just an allergic reaction." Robby steps closer, giving Lilly a small smile.
"Yeah? How are you feeling, Lilly?"
"Fucking tired." She tells her in a small, tired, and cranky voice, still laying her head against your shoulder. You let out an embarrassed sigh at your toddler, so strongly expressing her feelings. Robby, on the other hand, can't help but let out a laugh.
"Right. We're… working on that, before pre-k." You tell him, laughing only a little.
He continues to laugh, smiling at you."Between your's and Jack's language, I'm not surprised."
You shake your head, rubbing your daughter's back as she tries to sleep on your chest.
"Alright, well, we'll keep an eye on it. Bye, Lilly." Your daughter doesn't reply as Robby leaves the room.
After an hour of monitoring Lilly to make sure the Benadryl was working. Dr. Mohan comes back in and explains some more information before letting you go. You listen as she tells you about the EpiPen and more severe allergic reaction symptoms to look out for, which you jot down on your phone. Once she tells you everything, you walk out of the room. You're discharged and able to go home.
As you're making way to the door, waiting to leave, you walk past a room and see a figure out of the corner of your eye. A familiar figure. You walk back, taking a peek inside the room, since the door was cracked and the curtain wasn't closed all the way, and see your husband. Shirtless, trying and failing to treat a wound on his back or shoulder. You assume trying to clean or treat a wound because god forbid he asked for help. It takes you a second to realize he was here, not out with the SWAT team like he said he would be before he left this morning. Panic immediately sets in, and you draw the curtain back fully, quickly entering the room.
"What the fuck are you doing here?"
Jack lifts his head up at the sound of the voice, then tilts it slightly, seeing you holding your daughter. "What the fuck are you doing here?"
Robby walks past, overhearing the loving, affectionate greeting you and your husband give each other. He steps into the room, partially smiling a bit. "I see where Lilly gets her…expressive language from." But he's called by someone before he can say more, and steps back out.
Your daughter lifts her head at the sound of her dad's voice and immediately reaches for him from your arms. He takes her into his arms, holding her as she lays her head against his shoulder. "Hey, peanut. You okay? What happened? Is she alright?"
You nod, gesturing to the supplies he has laid out. "Are you okay?"
He gives you an annoyed look that you didn't answer him first, but responds anyway. "I'm fine, just got grazed, came in with another officer, it was serious, but he's stable. Now, is she okay?"
He asks, looking down at her as he rocks gently, swaying on his feet, and rubbing her back. Noticing how her eyes started to close as she dozes off.
"Yeah. Just um…found out she's allergic to strawberries today." Jack frowns, looking down at her. "Had a mild allergic reaction today after eating a few strawberries. Um, swollen lips and hives, but no swollen tongue, and she could still breathe, talk, and swallow. I gave her Benadryl and decided to bring her here."
Jack takes in what you said. You can see the clinical medical part of his brain parsing through the information, gently rubbing her back. "Did you get prescriptions for an EpiPen?"
You nod again. "Yes, Dr. Mohan got us a prescription. She's really caring."
"Yeah, she is. We're gonna have to keep an eye out for other allergies. Especially fruit with high acidity, such as pineapples, oranges, and lemons. And others just in case. I'd have Dr. Mohan write a prescription for 2 boxes of EpiPens instead of one. Think insurance will only cover one, but I can take care of it."
You listen, nodding along. "Alright, thank you for your second opinion, Dr. Abbot." You tease him. "Are you staying till your shift?"
"No. Think I'll stay for a bit, but I'll probably come home for a bit, take a nap, check on her before coming back." He gives the sleeping toddler in his arms a small kiss to the top of her head, before shifting and handing her back to you. He steps closer, placing a hand on your waist. Giving you a soft kiss. "See you when I get home, yeah?"
"Yeah. See you then. And maybe get someone to help unless you're gonna magically be able to reach the center of your shoulder." He smiles, giving you a small eye roll. "Love you."
"Love you too."
You leave the room, going back out the E.R as you pass the desk, overhearing some of the R2s discussing you and Abbot's daughter's appearance in the E.R.
"I told you that it wasn't a coincidence that they had the same last name." Dr. Santos says.
"How have we never seen her before? "Dr. Whitaker asks as Him, Dr. Santos, and Dr. Javadi lean over the desk.
"Just glad she wasn't my patient." Dr. Javadi says lowly.
"Hey! Is the waiting room just magically empty all of a sudden? Go back to your patients?" Dana scolds, breaking up the conversation.
You let out a small laugh at them as you carry your daughter out of the E.R.

Logan's attention is jolted away from his homework as he hears a knock on his dorm door. He closes his book, he rises from his desk and makes his way to the door, curious about who could be visiting him at this hour. There were no plans for tonight that he knew of. As he swings open the door, a mixture of surprise and amusement engulfs him when he sees Colin, Finn, and Robert standing on the other side. "Hey, fellas," Logan grins, leaning casually against the door frame. "To what do I owe this unexpected visit?"
Colin, wearing his signature mischievous smirk, speaks up. "We thought we'd drop by and see if the illustrious Logan Huntzberger would be up for a little adventure tonight. We're feeling the need for some good old-fashioned trouble."
Logan, preoccupied with thoughts of his and Rory's kiss, the agreement to see other people and his feelings for Rory, declines the invitation to go out. Finn, with his usual enthusiasm, slings an arm around Colin's shoulder and remarks, "You can't have a night of shenanigans without you, Logan."
Logan chuckles, "As much as I'd love to join, guys, I think I'll sit this one out tonight."
Finn raises an eyebrow, sensing that something is amiss. "Hmm, something's up."
"Nothing's wrong," Logan insists.
Colin growls, his voice filled with accusation. "You're a liar."
Logan rolls his eyes, his gaze shifting uncomfortably. He didn't want to delve into this discussion with Robert present. Logan witnessing Robert on a date with Rory had stirred up unfamiliar emotions within him and he didn’t want to take that out on Robert, damaging their friendship if he did.
Finn, observant as ever, casts a glance at Robert before returning his gaze to Logan. “Robert,” He starts to speak. “How about we meet you at the pub? I have some business between Colin and I that Logan needs to help settle, tonight.”
Robert furrows his brow, sensing the tension between the three friends. He nods, understanding that there's something deeper going on between them. "Alright, sounds good," he says, "I'll meet you guys there."
As Robert leaves, Finn turns to Logan with a serious expression. "Listen, Logan, I can tell something's bothering you. How about you welcome us in and we can work through whatever's going on, alright?" he suggests, his tone filled with genuine concern.
Colin says softly, “I know you have alcohol in the room, we can order pizza and help you talk through what’s going on.”
Finn and Colin step into Logan's dorm room, taking a moment to look around and get their bearings. The cozy, lived-in atmosphere of the room immediately puts them at ease. Finn spies the figurines on the bookshelf and walks over, examining them with interest. The room has been more decorated than the last time Finn was in the room. "These are quite the collection," Finn remarks, a faint smile on his face. He picks up the snowglobe from London, shaking it a little before setting it back down on the bookshelf. "Remind me of the adventures we've had together."
Logan offers a small, grateful smile. "Yeah, they do, don't they? Helps keep those memories alive."
Colin plops down on the couch, inviting Finn and Logan to join him. "So, what's been bothering you, mate?" he says with sincerity.
Logan was at a loss for words when it came to expressing his emotions about Rory and the unforgettable kiss they had shared. Ignoring his friend's question, he promptly retrieved three glasses from the bar cart, accompanied by a rather expensive bottle of whisky he had acquired from his parents' summer residence on his previous visit. "Unfortunately, I couldn't find any ice," Logan lamented, pouring a generous amount into each cup before passing them to his companions.
Seating himself on the armchair, Logan sinks into its soft fabric, which happens to match that of the couch. Finn's hand grasps the glass, being the first to indulge in a sip, while urging Logan to share his thoughts. "Alright, now that we have our drinks, spill. What's going on in your head?”
“Rory and I kissed.” He confessed, letting out a sigh before downing the liquid in his glass in one take.
Colin lets out a soft laugh, “That is not news, right? I thought we all knew that you guys kissed.”
Finn chuckles, a mixture of relief and amusement in his voice. "Well, Colin, it seems you're a step ahead of us on this one.” Finn stands up, moving towards the bar cart to grab the bottle Logan poured out of earlier. “But for Logan, this revelation seems to carry a weight that goes beyond just a simple kiss. Am I right?”
"You're right, Finn." Logan's voice carries a mixture of vulnerability and resignation as he admits his feelings to the two men in the room. He watches Finn's face transform into a knowing smile before he quickly replenishes their drinks. "I wanted to punch Robert in his stupid little face when he walked into your birthday party with Rory. All I could think about was if he kissed her. The mere idea of someone else tasting her strawberry and coffee lips... it's unbearable."
Finn's eyes twinkle mischievously as he exchanges a meaningful glance with Colin, who remains silent, allowing Finn to take the lead in the conversation with Logan. Finn, known for his ability to coax out true feelings, whether sober or under the influence, is determined to uncover the depths of Logan's heart.
With a playful tone in his voice, Finn addresses his friend saying, "Well, well, well, Logan Huntzberger. It appears that love has caught hold of you, my friend."
As Logan contemplates this revelation, his face displays a perplexed expression. He tries to respond, but finds himself at a loss for words. Maybe there was no fighting it, maybe Finn was correct. Love is a foreign concept to him, as he reflects upon his past experiences of lust, desire, and need with other women. True love has eluded him thus far, except for the pretend marriages of his kindergarten days.
Interrupting his train of thought, Finn interjects, "There's no use denying it now." Colin reclines on the couch, observing the exchange between Finn and Logan with evident amusement. “So her lips taste like strawberries and coffee huh?”
Colin adds to the discussion.“Do you think about Reporter Girls' lips a lot?”
As Logan's thoughts swirl around the desire to have Rory to himself and make her world better, he contemplates making a change. He knows that sharing her may not bring the fulfillment he seeks. Slowly, he takes a sip from his untouched glass, contemplating the decision that lies ahead.
Logan breaks the train of thought he was going down, recognizing that he needs more time to sort through his emotions and determine his next steps. He proposes changing the subject, suggesting they head to the bar for a quick meal, more drinks and to meet up with Robert as promised earlier in the evening. Colin and Finn readily agree, swiftly finishing their drinks before the trio makes their way towards the exit. Colin leads the way, allowing Finn an opportunity to offer one final comment. "Logan, consider this," Finn says, pausing for emphasis. "Out of all the people you could fall in love with for the first time, Rory is a truly exceptional woman."
