“Oh, I’m sorry, I didn’t realise it was your car. I’m guessing there’s no one you could call who has a key? I think there’s some sort of trick to opening the door from the outside with a coat hanger but I’ve only seen that on TV and movies so wouldn’t know how to actually do it. I don’t think we have a coat hanger, either.”
“It’s fine. I have that look about me. I’m completely aware of it. “Vee replied with a shrug. In the past before becoming a parent this was the sort of behavior she did on the regular. “ I know how to do that but the issue is the coat hanger. Is there a cleaners close by or something?”

“Exactly. They say something about how you hate at least one person in your close knit group of friends, and that’s such bullshit. How can you consider them a friend if you hate them? I say just trim the fat and not bother with it.” A bit harsh maybe but whatever. “Serial killer or crazed vampire, one of the two.”
“Is that really what people say? That seems so shady. Exactly it defeats the purpose of calling them a friend and also devalues the friends you do have, since it mean basically anyone can be a ‘friend’ Its easier to do it early before the feelings get potentially too deep. Honestly it could be a lot of thing’s. I’m a werewolf and I’ve done some weird shit during a full moon I’m sure. “

He laughed. “That’s hardly a deterrent, but I’ll keep my mouth shut anyway, for your sake.” He knew it was probably strange to some people that he liked children, perhaps even concerning, but he’d had so many over the years, all adopted, that he was just in the habit of adopting any children he met that showed an inclination to demand affection and attention from him. “I’m hoping that if I don’t tell you, you’ll never find out what an old man I really am.” Simon noted that both he and Vee had located her daughter and put a finger to his lips. “Well, she’s not over here, we’d better check by the plants.” Striding over, he winked. “Everyone’s unqualified for things when they start. Demanding years of experience from everyone just means no one ever gets a chance. As long as you make a point to learn, you’ll soon have it sorted out. And the others keep quitting because they think they’ve offended Christopher. Really, he’s not at all unpleasant, he just has quite serious eyebrows and they were all afraid of him. You’re made of sterner stuff, I can tell. It’s not as exciting as it sounds. I was angry and wanted time alone. I lived on a mountain and moved sheep from one end of it to another every day. Sometimes, when I was feeling wild and crazy, we’d even go down the mountain for a while. Riveting, really.”
“Is it just me or do you just have a knack for dealing with kids?” Vee had to admit that despite her recent bond with Simon she still didn’t know a lot about him or his life. She had some ideas based on town history, but still had a few questions. “Do you really think your age is going to have some sort of impact on thing’s? I wont start calling you ‘old man’ I promise” Vee smiled teasing Simon a bit before noting how her daughter seemed to be giving herself up. “ Yeah I think Melody is just too good at hiding “She replied in a sing song voice, knowing her daughter was listening. She could have swore she heard a small giggle coming from her hiding space. “ I can handle whatever life throws at me and honestly it takes more than a fear of someone disliking me to scare me away. You’re right though, I just gotta let myself accept that one day I’ll know everything, but today doesn’t have to be that day. Are you serious? Okay well it may not be riveting, but it is kind of adorable”

“That and it requires less effort. But yeah guess the moral of the story is there are too many judgmental people.”
“I think that could be the moral of most stories. What’s the youngest someone thought you were?”

“Curfew? Well, that sounds intriguing.”
“Prepare to be disappointed then. It’s not as exciting as it sounds. Something bad happened, which is kinda common around her and the curfew was done to try and prevent it, but it only really made people frustrated.

“Oh my sanity has been tested for a long time but it;s still there. I just have to remind myself that it’s not the end of the world......and have a few drinks to balance it out. You in?”

“Oh gosh, I remember my son doing the same thing when he was little-and trust me, you do need a couple of drinks after that.”
“Let me ask this then, should I be too worried about finding everything she leaves behind? Cause it seems like I’m in the middle of a scavenger hunt” Vee laughed. “I’m not a big drinker but in this case it seems appropriate. “
“So I have a little girl who just leave thing’s around town and acts like she can pick them up again later. I don’t know how I gave off the impression the entire town was her bedroom floor. I think I need a drink after finding a few random lost shoes and hats around here”

“You should know, I’m new in town, so I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“Oh. don’t worry about it. We had a curfew for a long time arund here and it’s just nice to know it’s gone”

“Do you prefer facial hair for that reason? People think I’m babysitting sometimes when I actually have a daughter, so I get the ambiguous age thing”

“ So I’m not allowed to have a look?” Vee replied as she tried to find a way to get into her locked car that wasn’t breaking the window. “For the record this is my car. I’m not stealing it. It’s what I get for balancing errands and a three year old”

“I can imagine, if I was in your place, I would miss her too, that’s normal, but at least you have your aunt to tell you stories about her, right? Thank you, I think a lot of people did, yeah, I guess, it’s just sort of part of life, as sad as that sounds. Could be that too, but she could also just care about you. Because I feel like they’re better not knowing”
“Yeah, in a lot of ways I’m missing a picture over a person, but it’s still something. It’s still half of me. Like she deliberately gave me the name Vera because then I would be named after a character in an Agatha Christie novel? It’s the weird thing’s like that that make make smile. My aunt fills me in a lot. She was younger than my mom so she got to watch a lot. It’s really sad, but in a weird way it kind of unites us. That is possible. I think just knowing you’re okay is more than enough”

“Yeah exactly. I like hanging out with you, therefore I’m more inclined to do so than with some stranger or something. Nothing more to it,” she said shrugging. “I guess cats do that to show how much they like someone. Good thing people don’t do that.”
“I’m a hundred percent the same. Why put ourselves through spending time with someone we only tolerate. I’d rather spend time with you cause I know we get along. I think they do. It does’t sound too weird for a cat to do. A human doing that is very serial killer.”
