Pre-game team prayer

Had a couple questions so I’ll answer here with some of my pics from last night.

The context of the “let’s go babe” was that they were all in a huddle during a timeout, they ended the huddle and all said “let’s go wings” and as the players were headed back to the court, Azzi was high fiving them all bc she was staying on the bench so she was facing the bench as players were walking past her, back to the court. She was saying “you got it” and “let’s go guys” to the others and when Paige walked by, she high fived her and said "lets go babe" so it wasn't during the actual huddle.

The context of Azzi not looking 100% was just because it was like a thousand degrees in the arena. I know we all often joke about them looking like glazed donuts on TV but I’ve never actually seen them all sweat as much and the trainers were actually dipping their towels into the ice cooler and ringing them out and putting them over several players necks and physically wiping sweat off their backs (shout out to the trainers and managers that sit behind them) So It just felt like maybe she wasn’t feeling 100% because of the heat. Like maybe dehydrated, nauseous, etc. She was fanning herself a lot and was really out of breath everytime she came back to the bench which is when I saw Maddy and Alysha ask her two different times if she was okay. She nodded yes both times so I think it was just really uncomfortable in there. I was sweating so I know they were hot. I do not believe it had anything to do with a physical injury because I never saw her visit with or check in with the trainer who was at the end of the bench.

Someone asked about Azzi’s finger and I didn’t see her get checked by trainers at all so I think it was fine. I believe she ran into someone and maybe just got it caught in between or something but I didn’t notice her messing with it at all on the bench so it seemed okay/nothing to worry about.

We were all pretty concerned about Paige after she fell. The whole bench gasped when she fell and unfortunately my line of sight to that end of the court wasn’t good so I didn’t see her actually fall but when they replayed it, Azzi turned around to look at the screen that was behind us and I was too busy watching Azzi (who looked real concerned) to actually watch the replay lol. But what I gathered is she fell on her back then Rhyne came down on her head/neck area. AC jumped up like a mama bear when they replayed it and was trying to grab towels from the trainers to go block the cameras but Paige stood up at that point and ref called a timeout so everyone headed back to the bench. Then Paige went to the very end of their bench and sat with her head in her hands and the trainer put an ice pack on her mid back. I don’t think they were worried about her head, seemed mostly her back and neck bc she was stretching her neck a lot so I assume it hurt. My whole row was really surprised when Paige went back in, so fingers crossed she’s okay because you could tell she was hurting.

I did not hear anything from any coaches about why Azzi was benched in the 4th. Like I said originally, Jose was truly tossing people in trying to find a combination that worked and there wasn’t really an extended time where the same lineup stayed out there so I don’t think it was for a specific reason, he just didn’t know who to put out there to counter what Atlanta was doing. Truthfully, no one was doing a good job stopping any of them. And then toward the end of the 4th when Atlanta put their bench in, we thought he would call a timeout to gameplan and he didn’t and the assistant coaches just said “let them play through it” which felt like they knew at that point there wasn’t anything they could do so they were just gonna let them play it out and that’s when he finally took out Paige.

I was at the game directly behind the bench. Here’s my thoughts and it’s gonna be jumbled because I’m trying to remember everything.

-team came out with good energy and high spirits. They all had smiles, got their pregame prayer in.

-Jose uses the F word a-lot and I can’t even count how many times I heard it but when they were down 10 in the first before Azzi went in, he stomped his foot and said “Fudd, go get her”

-Azzi with the first 5 points was great. Bench loved it. Lots of cheers

-in timeouts, AC is a big motivator who constantly/and sternly keeps people engaged in the huddles til Jose comes over

-I don’t like speaking on things that are assumptions but something seemed off with Azzi tonight. Every time she got subbed out, someone was leaning in to ask if she’s alright/feeling alright. She nodded yes everytime so I don’t think it’s anything too important

-when Paige took that hard fall, Azzi turned around immediately and looked up at the screen because that arena only has screens in the two opposite corners. When they did the replay, I don’t think I’ve ever seen her grimace that hard. AC immediately started asking the trainers for towels bc they were gonna go run and cover up Paige laying there, then Jose said “Fudd, go” so she jumped up and was taking off her warmup shirt before the ref ended up using a timeout.

-Paige came and sat at the end of the bench with the trainers, they had an ice pack on her back. I don’t know if it was her head but I know they were treating her back, and she was grimacing when the trainer was pressing on her back. She was bent over, but I couldn’t tell if she was holding her head or just had her face in her hands

-when the game restarted, as they were giving high fives, Azzi tugged on Paige’s jersey as she walked by and asked if she was okay and Paige looked like she said “I’m alright”

-Paige eventually went back in the game which everyone behind the bench was surprised because we didn’t think she should (but I’m not a medical professional)

-the wings caught good momentum and had a small lead but then it just kept falling apart. Jose used the F word a lot every time Jordin Canada hit a three pointer.

-Sometime in the first half, when Alanna got hit again, she went to the end of the bench and before the game resumed, Azzi walked over and kissed her hand, then lightly patted Alanna’s nose with it

-in one of the huddles, Azzi said “let’s go babe” to Paige and I only can confidently say this because the two girls in front of me both turned around and said “did she say that?” And then we laughed bc we all heard it.

-the assistant coaches were running out of electrolyte powder which was a funny random thing that happened

-you could tell that everyone was not fully in it, like they all looked frustrated and tired and clearly on their third game in five days

-you could tell that Jose was trying to find a rotation that worked because at one point he sent Li in the game and then immediately took her out when Atlanta subbed in someone else. I don’t think the rotations were great but Dallas didn’t really have an answer for a lot of what Atlanta was doing.

-overall, I honestly don’t know that they could’ve won that with the energy I saw. Everyone looked dejected and over it and the shots not falling for pretty much everyone made it worse.
