Rainbow flag colorpicked from the original 1978 flag <3
this is my favorite of all the rainbow flags because a) the stripes mean things: sex, life, healing, sunlight, nature, magic, harmony, and spirit. Sex (hot pink) and magic (turquoise) were more difficult colors to get which is why the standard flag is six colors, but those are my favorite colors! Both as colors and as meanings!
and b) we know for a stone cold fact that Gilbert Baker meant this flag to be for Everybody In The Family, which has gotten a little lost in the emphasis on individual flags for different identities, to the point where some people are starting to think the six-color rainbow is only for gay men
anyway thank you this was nice to see on a Monday, hello beautiful
“It’s okay. I’ve got you.”
I just felt compelled to write this today. I’ve wanted to for a while, but I guess never sat down to do it. I’m having a painful allergy shot reaction and thought I’d just go for it.
I actually started a Nick drabble where Nick stays the week with Adrian and Kyle not too long after he is out of the hospital and has been home after his away-from-home treatment. Blaine arranges a trip to Lima for everyone to kind of ‘chill down’ for the anorexia stress but Nick opts to stay with Adrian and Kyle instead, needing a bit of a break from his parents and also wanting to give Kurt a break from taking care of him.
When trying to help Nick, he confides in something similar that happened to him when he was around 17-19 years old. He tells Nick’s he’s never told anybody, only Kyle ever. And I’ve always wanted to write the conversation between Adrian and Kyle.
Trigger warning: Rape.

Big trouble
“Oh, I didn’t know you’d be here.”
Cody looked up from the sandwich he was in the middle of a taking a bite of, eyebrow arching.
“Okay, maybe I did.” Nick admitted, giving a sheepish smile. “But don’t I get points for walking all the way out here a day I don’t have an appointment to run in to you?”
“It might count as stalking.” Cody finally spoke, voice soft.
Nick let out a laugh and Cody found himself wanting to hear that laugh more. He liked how bright Nick’s eyes were when he laughed and how pretty he was when he smiled. He scooted to the edge of the bench, giving Nick space to sit beside him.
“I’m honored.” Nick dropped into the seat by him. “How is your day going?”
Cody swallowed his bite of food and shrugged. “It’s okay. I was up late so I’m pretty tired.”
“Why were you up late?”
“Midterms. I was in the studios until three this morning.” Cody admitted.
“Three?!”
“Art takes time. A lot of time.” Cody laughed a bit. “How is your day going?”
“I got breakfast out with my dads and little brother so I had to get up earlier than usual.” Nick shrugged. “I usually sleep in…”
“I always do unintentionally.” Cody held out his small bag of potato chips, offering Nick one. “I’m always late no matter what I’m going to.”
“Thanks.” Nick smiled and then laughed. “Why are you always late?”
“I hate being early.”
Nick laughed again. “So you’re late?”
Cody covered his mouth, swallowing, and nodded.
“Do you like to fish?” Nick grinned.
“I feel like this is a trick question.” Cody blushed.
“Today she met me at the door, said I would have to choose, if I hit that fishin' hole today.” Nick sang.
“Oh my God.” Cody shook his head. “I’m embarrassed for you right now.”
Nick grinned again. “I have an excellent singing voice. But, back to business. Would you turn down a girl to fish?”
“Not my team.”
Nick’s eyes lit up even more. Sure, he’d assumed.
But now he had confirmation.
“What about a guy? Would you turn down a guy to fish?”
“If it was the right guy, how do you know he wouldn’t come fishin’ with me?” Cody asked, giving a sweet smile.
“I take it you do like to fish.” Nick stole a chip out of Cody’s bag.
“I fished a lot when I was younger.” Cody confessed. “It’s not my favorite thing to do but it’s good for if you want peace and quiet. It’s relaxing… It can be really fun if you go with a friend, but usually you’re loud and scare ‘em off so that’s kinda pointless.”
Nick bit his lip to keep from laughing. Hearing Cody say ‘’em’ and his accent slipping out was one of the most adorable things ever. Which was saying a lot when you had Kris as a little brother.
“Shut up.” Cody blushed and then bit his own lip. “I like to fish but I haven’t in a long time. My dad and brothers used to go when I was younger.”
“My grandpa took me and Zach a few times.” Nick explained. “Dad tried to go a few times but he wasn’t so much… built for it.”
“Which dad?”
“Blaine Dad. Kurt Dad wouldn’t be caught dead fishing.” Nick snorted. “The most he’ll do outside is walking, really. I mean, he likes to walk around the city. I’m speaking more when we’re in Ohio. That’s where—”
“They’re from.” Cody finished and this blushed again.
Nick laughed. “Yeah. We have a beach house in Michigan, though. It’s gorgeous. Daddy—Kurt Dad— really likes being outside there.”
“Do you all stay there during the summers?”
“Sometimes. It really depends.”
“Is it only a summer house?”
“No. It’s ours all the time.” Nick answered. “It’s not very winter friendly, though. Not yet at least. Dad talks about renovating all the time but I don’t think he’s very serious about it… They talk about renovating stuff all the time.”
“Maybe they just don’t have time?”
“They could just pay someone to do it but I think Dad likes to do stuff like that with Grandpa. They’re really close.” Nick shrugged. “Zach and I sure wouldn’t be any help. Zach is clumsy and Daddy won’t let me do anything but walk and breathe pretty much.”
Cody looked down, seeing Nick’s very brief scowl.
“Also, I tend to be pretty lazy.” Nick added in a joking tone.
Cody smiled at that. “I think everyone can be pretty lazy.”
“Are you?”
“Well, no.” Cody admitted. “But when you grow up in the country, you don’t really have time to be lazy. I know I’m here now but I get so bored that I find stuff to do, things to fix…”
“What can be so time consuming in the country?”
“Working in the garden, taking care of the animals, getting our water, helping around the house. Plus, when you work in a small town like me… There are tons of elderly people and they’re always looking for help or rides to the doctor or store… And I helped around the church a lot, too.”
“Church? You’re allowed in?”
“My family is very religious. Especially my mother.” Cody explained. “My church doesn’t understand but they accept me… more than my own mom most of the time. I’ve gone to church since I can remember. I don’t go anymore apart from when I’m home, though.”
“Are you religious?”
“Not as religious as my family.” Cody said, shrugging. “But it was a very big part of my upbringing. I don’t know what I believe but I believe in… something. There has to be more out there. Plus, life has been really rough at me at some points and I feel like things turned out right for a reason.”
“What if that reason is they just got better?”
“You can think that.” Cody looked at him, not seeming annoyed. “And I don’t know what I think, not exactly, but… but it’s a nice idea, isn’t it?”
“Not too many religious people are very accepting of people… especially my dads.”
“I think it was weird for my church at first. You don’t have a lot of openly gay people in that part of Georgia. But both my boyfriend and I went there when we were infants, so…”
“Your boyfriend?” Nick said, feeling his chest tighten. Of course this adorable guy had a boyfriend. Why had he thought any differently?
“Ex-boyfriend… We’ve been broken up for years but we dated so long that…” Cody trailed off. “It’s weird.”
“How long did you date?”
“Twelve or thirteen until seventeen. We were young but… first love.”
“First love.” Nick nodded. “Have you dated since then?”
“Two guys.” Cody nodded. “Uhm… They weren’t very… good, though. It wasn’t serious. Have you had a serious boyfriend?”
“Serious but not… very good.” Nick admitted.
Cody watched him, concerned.
Nick pulled his legs to his chest. “He didn’t hit me but… he did almost every other type of abuse. I think he may have played a huge part in my eating disorder.”
Cody didn’t speak.
“Why is it so easy to talk to you?” Nick asked, forcing a laugh.
Cody smiled a bit. “Probably because you don’t know me very well.”
“It feels like I know you pretty well.”
Cody’s smile grew and he busied himself by taking a sip of his water.
“Is that silly?”
“I don’t know. It might be… but rumor has it you’re a pretty silly person.”
“I used to be.” Nick corrected.
“It’s only been a few months. Give yourself time.” Cody smiled. “It takes a while to get yourself back.”
“Sometimes I worry it won’t happen.” Nick admitted.
“Surround yourself with positive people.” Cody smiled again.
“You should hang out with me on a regular basis in that case. You seem positive.” Nick grinned.
“We can hang out.” Cody blushed a bit. “But you know, I’m pretty quiet. I’m afraid you’d find me overly boring.”
“I don’t think you’re boring at all. I like talking to you.” Nick relaxed against the back of the bench. “Besides, being quiet isn’t all that bad.”
“It can be nice but it can be kind of lonely.”
“You’re quiet and I’m loud. We can give each other the best of both worlds.”
Cody snorted. “Okay. Well, when do you want to hang out next?”
“Movie tonight?” Nick asked.
“So soon?” Cody let out a loud laugh. “You must be very bored to want to hang out with me so much.”
“Something like that.” Nick smiled. “So, what do you say?”
“I can’t do a movie tonight. I’ve got some art to finish for tomorrow.” Cody looked at him. “But some company wouldn’t be horrible.”
“I’ll bring the food since you’ll be bringing the entertainment.” Nick said, looking positively excited. It made Cody want to hug him, seeing him looking so excited.
“Alright. You should give me your phone number. I’ll text you my address.” Cody said shyly—he had just asked for Nick Anderson-Hummel’s phone number!!!
“Okay. Got a pen?”
“An artist always has a pen.” Cody pulled one from his messenger bag and handed it to Nick.
Nick carefully took Cody’s hand, writing his phone number on Cody’s palm.
Cody bit his lip, trying to ignore the fact that his heart was speeding up—which was completely unrelated to skin contact with Nick. Obviously.
“I should go… but… text me?” Nick gave a playful smirk before backing up. “Bye, Cod.”
“Cod?” Cody called after him.
“You call me Nick. It’s only fair!” Nick called back before waving and turning the corner.
“I’m in trouble.” Cody mumbled, looking at his hand. Nick’s handwriting was surprisingly neat for someone like, well, him. “Big trouble.”
Getting Ready
AU
“Here, let me just…” Carole stepped up to Blaine and straightened his bow tie. “Perfect.”
Blaine took a deep breath—something he’d been doing every few minutes since he’d woken up at six in the morning next to Kurt who he would be marrying that day.
“Don’t be nervous.” Carole beamed. “You look handsome and Kurt looks so handsome too. You two are such a beautiful couple.”
“Yeah.” Blaine nodded. “I’m trying not to be perfect but I feel like the last ten years have been leading up to this and it’s kind of scary.”
“We’ve all been there.” Carole laughed. “It is scary but it’s starting now. You’ll have your first look, get some pictures, hide, and then you two are going to walk down the aisle together and get married.”
Blaine felt his eyes water and he nodded.
“You deserve every second of this. It only happens once.” Carole touched his cheek. “Okay?”
“Yeah.” Blaine blinked rapidly until his tears were gone and cleared his throat.
“Come here.” Carole hugged him tightly. “We are also so happy you’re going to officially be in the family.”
“Me too.” Blaine hugged her back. “Thank you for doing this for me.”
“Doing what?” Carole asked.
“All of this.” Blaine pulled back. “Helping me get ready.”
“You’ve had two other moms in here too.” Carole smiled.
“Yeah. Most only get one so I’m making out pretty well, aren’t I?” Blaine sniffed a tiny bit.
“Are you ready?” Carole’s smile grew. “It’s time for the first look.”
“Yes.” Blaine said, a silly lovesick smile on his face and heart beating faster than it ever had.
…
“Geeze, Kurt. I can’t believe you’re getting married today. I still remember chasing you around in diapers.” Burt said, carefully taking Kurt’s tuxedo jacket off of the hanger.
“Dad…” Kurt rolled his eyes a bit but was smiling.
“Kid, I worried about you for a long time. I was afraid you wouldn’t find happiness, especially the kind I had with your mom then and the kind I have with Carole now.” Burt paid no attention to his son. “I’m just so happy that you found someone like Blaine.”
“Me too, Dad.” Kurt’s smile softened and he looked in the mirror at himself. When he was younger, he’d worried as well. But then, Blaine.
“I don’t think I ever told you this, Kurt, but when you were seventeen Blaine told me that I needed to give you the sex talk.”
Kurt began coughing. “What?!”
“Oh yeah, Kurt. Came to the garage and told me at work.” Burt grinned.
“He didn’t. You’re lying.” Kurt shook his head.
“I knew he was going to be around for a while that day.” Burt shrugged. “I didn’t know he’d be here today because, hell, you weren’t even dating yet and first loves don’t usually last too long. But maybe I did kind of know. He was taking care of you a long time before you knew it, kid.”
Kurt raised an eyebrow, trying to figure out if his father was joking or not.
“But then that fall and college… and your grad school and his law school… I honestly knew your senior year of high school but I really knew when you two had that big fight and you broke up. You were both so broken and when you started talking again and it was like the light was back in both of your eyes. You two are each other’s light, Kurt. That’s special.”
“That’s sweet.” Kurt’s voice was soft. It was true, though. Their quality of life was so much better when they were together.
They’d both been a bit nervous when Blaine had gotten a job offer in Cambridge… but then, the new office had opened and they moved Blaine… it was like fate. All of a sudden, they’d gone from uneasy to blissfully happy to live together, forever, and both of them doing what they loved. It had been just short of a miracle, really.
“You two take such good care of each other. I worried about you in New York without him but… Blaine would never let anything happen to you… and you’d never let anything happen to him. I’m so happy you have each other and that you’ve brought him into our family.”
Kurt’s eyes were suddenly tingling.
“He’s always been a part of this family. We’re really just making it official today.” Burt continued. “But I’ve waited for this day for a long time, Kurt. To see you get married. Ten years ago, it wasn’t even legal and now you’re in this tuxedo and Blaine’s in one and… Kurt, I love you two together. But I really love Blaine, too, just as he is.”
“I know, Dad. He knows. He loves you too.” Kurt reassured Burt. “I think it’s hard for him to come out and say it but he knows and he loves you too.”
Burt shook his head, smiling. “I just needed you to know that I wholeheartedly approve—not that you or Blaine need my approval or anything like that. I just needed you to know that I couldn’t imagine a better person for you to love and take care of or for him to love and take care of. You are going to have such a fulfilled life, Kurt, and I wouldn’t want any less than Blaine for you. Because you two are meant for each other.”
Kurt teared up.
“I can see your love for him and I am so excited for today and for those babies coming soon. Quinn’s already showing and you two are going to have your own family… and I know you’re both going to be so great. I’m so excited to see where you two go, what you do… I’m just so happy for you, Kurt.”
Kurt wiped his eyes. “I’m so excited too, Dad. Thank you for always believing in me and in us… and for taking him in like he’s your own.”
“Don’t thank me.” Burt handed him a Kleenex. “Just put that jacket on so you two can get married.”
Kurt stepped forward, hugging Burt tightly.
“Don’t rush the day. Just enjoy your time with him. No worrying about napkins or anything, okay?”
“Okay.” Kurt laughed, pulling away. “Thank you, Dad. Really.”
Burt grinned. “Carole texted me that Blaine’s almost ready so you better head on out. I’ll see you after the ceremony for pictures, okay?”
“Okay.” Kurt nodded. “I love you, Dad.”
“I love you too, Kurt.”
Christmas Eve Traditons
“Daddy’s home, Daddy’s home, Daddy’s home!” Nick cheered gleefully, jumping off the back of the couch when Kurt came through the front door.
“You’re definitely Blaine’s.” Kurt laughed when Nick ran over, skidding to a stop in front of him. “Hey, Pooh Bear.”
“Daddy, can we do the thing now? The thing?” Zach asked, running over.
“We’ll have to make sure everyone is ready.” Kurt said, handing a light grocery bag to each of them. “Where’s Dad?”
“Sophie did the M&M thing again.” Zach sighed. “It smelled really bad.”
“Daddy, did Nicky and I eat our poop because it looked like brown M&M’s?” Nick asked as they all three began to walk into the kitchen.
“Thank God you did not.” Kurt shuddered.
Where had they gone wrong? Why did Sophie go in corners, take her pull up off, poop, and then eat the poop?
The only not-crude reason they could give the twins was that she thought it was M&Ms. And who knew, maybe she did? Blaine was pretty sure she was doing it out of spite with the twins being home during the day for Christmas break.
Blaine came in, Sophie cheerfully skipping in behind him.
“Don’t ask.” Blaine said before Kurt could get out his question. “You don’t want to know where or what it got on. Just don’t ask.”
“Not the piano again?”
“Inside it.” Blaine whimpered before going to kiss him. “Hey. What happened at the office? Were the police there already?”
“Yeah. They think some kids were probably just messing around. They walked through with me, but we couldn’t find anyone there or anything disturbed… but before I was leaving, one of them asked for a picture for his daughter which was kind of crazy but also kind of cool.”
Blaine laughed. “It’s starting already. That article came out and now people are coming up to you. That’s great.”
“Yes, well, as long as I get the boost in salary I’ll take pictures with as many people that ask.” Kurt bent down, scooping up Sophie. “Sophie…”
“I don’t know why I did it.” Sophie said bashfully, looking down and playing with a button on his collar.
“You’re acting out. What did we say about not going potty in the toilet?”
“That it’s what babies do and Sophie isn’t a baby.” Sophie glanced up with her bright blue eyes. “And that if I’m not going to go potty in the toilet I have to give up my big girl panties and wear diapers again.”
“Are you going to make Daddy and I buy diapers for a three-year-old?”
“No, Daddy.” Sophie quickly shook her head and then kissed his cheek.
“Dad, can we do it now? Daddy said we had to wait for you to be ready!” Nick grabbed Blaine’s hand and began to shake his arm.
“If Daddy is ready, I am ready.” Blaine scooped him up.
“And then after we can watch The Santa Clause?” Zach asked eagerly, reaching up.
“Soon you boys will be too big for this.” Blaine grunted picking Zach up too.
“They’re already there.” Kurt laughed. “Zach, do you want to give yours away first?”
“Yes! I got Nicky and Dad really good ones!” Zach wiggled until Blaine lowered him to the ground and ran towards the living room.
“You hitching a ride?” Blaine asked Nick who made to move to get down.
“Yep.” Nick grinned.
Kurt and Sophie headed to the living room, Sophie toddling and her hand in Kurt’s.
“Dad, does Sophie even know yet?” Nick questioned as they followed Kurt and Sophie.
“I think she’ll really know next year.” Blaine whispered before putting him down at the tree. “Zach, want to explain it to Sophie?”
“Every Christmas Eve when it’s just us and before Santa comes, we all give each other ornaments.” Zach said excitedly, practically bouncing. “We pick one that represents a best memory from the year or something we think you’ll really like. It’s just us kids, though.”
“That’s right.” Blaine winked at Kurt, who rolled his eyes.
“Nick, this one is for you!” Zach ran up to Nick, a tiny ornament dangling in his hand. “There were tons of soccer balls but this is the first one I’ve seen with a net and it’s awesome! I got it because you won three games for us in kiddie soccer and because I know you wanna be a soccer player forever.”
Nick eagerly took it and then shoved an ornament back at him. “It’s two! A egg and a dragon! I was going to get a lizard one but the dragon looked cooler”
“Yeah!” Zach bounced excitedly.
“Okay, now give Sophie hers.” Kurt bent down. They were so used to only exchanging between themselves and it was really the first Christmas Sophie could ‘kind of’ understand.
“Me first!” Nick took it over.
“What is it, Nicky?” Sophie asked, eyes wide.
“It’s a ferris wheel because you were scared and I hugged you and we didn’t die!” Nick exclaimed.
Blaine laughed loudly and tried to turn it into a cough. Kurt couldn’t help but bite his lip to keep from laughing as well.
“Yay, we didn’t die!” Sophie bounced up and down.
“I got you a Princess Sophia ornament because I know you like her and she has your name.” Zach held his out. “See? And she’s got a bunny rabbit and I know you like those!”
Sophie giggled and took them both, then put them together like they were dolls having a conversation.
“Obviously Sophie had help.” Kurt said. “Nick, Sophie got you an ornament of a toaster since you took ours apart two months ago.”
“I still can’t believe it was broke and after he put it back together, it worked again.” Blaine mumbled, soft enough only Kurt could hear.
Nick giggled and took it.
“And Zach, she got you a purple hippo since purple is your favorite color and hippos are your favorite animal.”
Zach hugged Sophie and gave her a big kiss on the cheek.
“Okay, now!” Blaine clapped his hands. “Time to add them to the tree upstairs.”
…
“Ready or not, here it comes.” Blaine came into his and Kurt’s bedroom later that night, a tiny gift bag in his hand.
“A giftbag and tissue? Really?” Kurt, who was sitting in bed at his laptop and looking at locations for sale in New York City, looked up. “You stepped up the game without telling me.”
“This one might be a special one.” Blaine grinned and went to sit on the bed.
“It’ll probably top mine. I think I started looking too late.” Kurt admitted, closing his laptop and pushing it under the bed. “Open yours first?”
“I’m sure it’s wonderful.” Blaine said when Kurt handed him a small plastic bag. He pulled it out, seeing a jelly fish. “I hate you!”
“You getting stung was hilarious!” Kurt laughed. “And Nick coming up right away and peeing on you!”
Blaine rolled his eyes.
“Oh, come on. You got me an ornament with underwear and my name engraved on it once.”
“That was hilarious. Perfect. I wish I’d gotten the reaction on camera.”
“Yeah, I’m sure you do.” Kurt laughed.
“Okay, here’s yours. Don’t jump to conclusions—I’ll explain.”
Kurt pulled the tissue out and pulled open a nice white sturdy box.
“Blaine, this is supposed to be cheap.” Kurt whispered.
“Oh, that’ll be the least of your worries.” Blaine sat by him. “Open it.”
Kurt pulled out an ornament. It was just a tall building. A tall building. “Blaine?”
Blaine took it and put a sticker on it. A sticker with Kurt’s logo for work. He then handed it back to Kurt.
“That’s sweet but I don’t… get it.”
“It’s yours.”
“The ornament, I know.”
“No.” Blaine shook his head. “The building. That’s not really an ornament. It’s a 3D figurine that contractors made when planning out the look for your new office. Your new solo office.”
“What?” Tears filled Kurt’s eyes.
“It’s an investment in our family. You’re ready. You’ve been ready.” Blaine reached over, touching his cheek. “And in March, on the 13th, it’ll be finished.”
Kurt pulled back, covering his face and his shoulders began to shake. “This cannot be happening.”
“It is. It is, and I can’t think of a better way to use that inheritance on.”
“Blaine, Sophie is still eating poop. Do you know how much more I’ll have to work with my own office and my own employees?”
“She’s a kid. By next week, she’ll be eating boogers like a normal toddler.” Blaine laughed. “Working longer in the beginning should be fine.”
“I don’t know if I’m ready.” Kurt lowered his hands. “Oh my God.”
“You will be and if you’re not, if you need more time, it’ll be there… on March 13th. The day after tomorrow we’re going to the contractors’ house and he’s going to show you everything he’s got so far. You’ll love it. It’s perfect.”
Kurt gently pushed his shoulder, sniffling. “It’s too much, Blaine.”
“Nothing is too much for you. Nothing. I’d give you anything I could… so I am.” Blaine smiled and leaned to kiss him.
Kurt kissed him back and then stared at the ‘ornament’ again. Upon looking closer, he could see that Blaine had just superglued a round piece to the back of the figure and had put a hook on it, but he was pretty sure nothing else would ever top their Christmas Eve ornament exchange again.
“I can’t believe Sophie said no but still took the ring.”
Kurt walked into the house expecting to find Blaine sprawled out on the living room, being an ultra-perfectionist about wrapping the kids Christmas presents with the perfect wrapping paper and then finishing off with a perfect ribbon bow on each and every gift.
Blaine couldn’t do baking but he could wrap a damn good Christmas gift.
What he found, however, was Blaine on the couch sitting with Sophie who appeared to be crying her eyes out.
His first instinct was to think something was wrong with Nick. Somehow, he’d relapsed and had re-developed his eating disorder. But he had to tell himself to not think that every time someone looked upset.
Sophie was twenty-one and every little thing seemed like the end of the world, after all.
Blaine glanced up but Sophie, who had her face buried in his fist, did not even know he was home.
‘What happened?’ Kurt mouthed, looking concerned as he closed and locked the front door.
‘Dunno,’ Blaine mouthed back, running his fingers through her hair.
Kurt came over, gently sitting on the couch and putting his hand on Sophie’s back.
Sophie launched up and then practically threw her head into Kurt’s shoulder, gripping his shirt.
“She’s not ready to talk yet.” Blaine whispered, rubbing Sophie’s back.
“Sophie, is everything okay?” Kurt asked.
“Nothing is okay!” Sophie cried sitting up straight.
Blaine jokingly rolled his eyes. She always told Kurt the first time he asked, but Blaine would have to ask at least twenty times before she’d even give a summary.
“L-Logan is what’s wrong.” She sniffled, pulling back. She took a proffered tissue from Blaine and wiped her face and then blew her nose. She then tossed it angrily on the floor.
(Kurt inwardly cringed, making a mental note to clean that up.)
“What did Logan do?” Blaine asked.
She shook her head, taking another Kleenex.
“Is Logan okay?” Kurt asked.
“Probably not.” Sophie covered her face with her hands.
“Sophie, why is he probably not okay?”
“Because I am a horrible and selfish person who can’t think of anyone else’s feelings apparently.”
“Logan did not say that. He would never say that. He loves you.”
Sophie got up, fished in her purse, and then handed Kurt a box.
A ring box.
Kurt opened it, trying his hardest to not tear up.
“He asked you to marry him?”
“I said no. And then I said yes. And then I said no again.” Sophie wiped her eyes.
“Why did you say no?” Blaine asked calmly.
“Because I-I’m supposed to travel and… and see things… and grow up to be a woman that can take care of herself. I’m not supposed to be engaged out of college, end up pregnant, and live the rest of my life as a house wife.”
“Please tell me you didn’t say that to him.” Kurt covered his mouth.
“You know I did. We’ve talked about it so many times, Daddy. And he knows how I feel about him. But I’m not that girl. And I’m definitely not the girl who spends three hours sobbing because Logan hands me a ring and asks a stupid question.” Sophie sniffled and wiped her nose with a third Kleenex from Blaine.
“Then why did you say yes?” Blaine asked.
“Can you not be a lawyer and be a Dad?” Sophie began to cry again.
“I’m not being a lawyer. You’re just upset because I asked you to think about why you said yes.”
“Because it was so sweet and if I was anyone else, it would have been a perfect proposal. Christmas Eve in the snow at our favorite park.” Her lip started to tremble. “And he said all of the perfect things and I really love him so much.”
Kurt rubbed her shoulder.
“I’m not ready to be that girl. I want to do so many things with my life.” She continued, sniffling.
“Why did you say no again?”
“He offered to do it with me.” She burst into tears. “But he has plans too, and he shouldn’t give them up!”
“What gives you the right to decide what he wants for him? Or what he should or shouldn’t do?” Blaine asked.
“Too lawyer-y, Blaine.” Kurt whispered.
“This was supposed to be the perfect Christmas. And now I don’t even know if he’ll ever want to talk to me again.” Sophie wiped her face again.
“So why do you still have the ring?” Blaine asked. “If you said no?”
“H-he told me to hang on to it and decide if I wanted it.” Sophie sniffled, sitting cross-legged in the middle of the floor.
“Did you even look at it?” Kurt asked, sitting next to her—in his nice work pants, even.
She shook her head.
“Don’t you want to?” he asked, the box still in his hands.
“No because it’s not mine.” She sniffled again.
There was a knock on the door.
“Oh God, I bet that’s him.” She wiped her face with the sleeve of her sweater. “I knew he would come. He always does this.”
“I’ll get it.” Blaine said while Kurt straightened her hair that had gotten messed up during her fit of misery.
“Every time we argue or I get upset he gives me three hours before coming to my apartment.” She whined to Kurt as she could hear Blaine and Logan talking quietly.
“You’ve been together since you were 14. He knows you.” Kurt smiled and gave her a hug as they came into the room.
“Hey, Kurt.” Logan waved and gave a small smile.
“Hey.” Kurt beamed and edged Sophie up.
“Are you, erm, okay?” Logan asked.
“You had better throw that awful cologne out, okay?” Sophie blurted, stepping up to him.
“Already done.”
“And those stupid pajamas from when you gained the weight your freshman year.”
“But they are really—"
“Throw it out.” Sophie repeated. “They’ve got holes everywhere.”
“Okay.”
“And you can’t keep eating pork rinds or I will never want to kiss you which happens to be one of my favorite things to do.”
“Are you going to let me properly give you that ring or what?” Logan grinned.
Sophie opened her mouth.
“We don’t have to get married now or even in the next five years. I just want you to know that I’ll follow where you want to go and if you don’t want me to, I’ll be here waiting.”
Sophie started to cry again, covering her mouth.
“Don’t cry because I am about to re-ask you a very important question. You don’t want to look blotchy in the pictures Kurt posts on social media.” Logan teased.
“I need you to listen—no babies are coming out of this vagina until I am 32, okay?” She held up a finger, looking very much like Kurt.
“I don’t want kids anyway.” Logan responded, looking past Sophie and over at Kurt.
Kurt, who still had the ring box in his hand, tossed it to Logan before he got down on one knee.
“Sophia Anderson-Hummel, will you marry me?”
“Yes!” She pulled him up and kissed him.
“This, Maddie, is what we call making out.” Nick said brightly as they opened the door. “Daddy, why are you crying?”
Maddie, his six year old daughter, giggled.
Cody nudged Nick out of the doorway and came into the house with their one-year old daughter on his hip.
“Logan proposed!” Blaine exclaimed because Kurt had completely ignored Nick, running to hug both Logan and Sophie.
“I can’t believe this happened right before Christmas and I was here to see it.” Kurt cried.
“I can’t believe Sophie said no but still took the ring.” Blaine teased.
“Wait, hold on. Logan, you did it? And got a yes?” Nick asked, going forward.
“It was touch and go for a minute.” Logan laughed as Nick gave him a hug.
“Welcome to the family. Speaking of, where are the twins? Zach didn’t make it yet?” Nick looked around.
“Wait, they’re coming today? They said it was going to be tomorrow.” Blaine looked confused.
“Erm. Whoops. That was the surprise he wanted me to keep, right?” Nick looked sheepishly towards Cody.
Cody half smiled and said, “Yeah. It was.”
“Okay.” Kurt interrupted. “Logan, you’re staying. When they get here we’re going to all go out and celebrate.”
Cody went around Nick, making a beeline for Sophie.
“Look at the ring! Isn’t It gorgeous?!” she squealed. She then took a deep breath and said to herself, “Stay calm, Soph. You’re a mature girl who doesn’t need to freak out over a ring… only it’s the best ring ever—yes, Cody, look at it!”
“It’s beautiful.” Cody grinned as the baby reached for Sophie.
“This is the best Christmas yet, Blaine. It has to be. Sophie is engaged!” Kurt exclaimed.
“Finally, someone else can pay for grad school.” Blaine joked, earning glares from both Sophie and Kurt. “It was just a joke, guys. Just a joke.”
388 Days
Hey, guys! I plan to write 1-2 drabbles every day to and including Christmas. I may do all of them like this, just different years, or I may come up with different traditions or something completely different all together.
Either way, consider this one of 5-10 early Christmas presents. I hope you enjoy!
Also, please feel free to make Christmas drabble suggestions as well! :D
~*~
Kurt,
I don’t think this idea is going to play out the way you want it to.
I can write twenty-page long essays in a day but putting feelings into words has never been very easy for me, which I’m sure you know. But you wanted us to start writing each other Christmas letters now that we’re married, and I’ll do my best.
We got married 23 days ago and it’s still surreal to me. I still can’t get over the proposal too. You outdid yourself, as always.
I think we had the best year. Not just because work sent so well for both of us… but I feel like we’ve grown a lot this year in our relationship. Not only are we now stuck together, for better or for worse, but in four and a half months we’ll be stuck with twins.
Sorry about the twin thing, by the way. Overachiever, I know. At least they’ll be cute.
I think I’m rambling and this was probably meant to be sentimental and sweet.
But it’s hard to put in words how happy I am that we’re here now, together. And that we both decided on forever although I think we both had decided that back in high school. I knew you were the one from the beginning—I really did; I’m not only saying it because we’re here today.
I know our first Christmas as a married couple isn’t going how you or I wanted it. We’re stuck in New York City in this apartment because of a snow storm. The power is off and on and we weren’t even able to bake cookies. (By we I mean you, by the way. But you already know this.) Not to mention we aren’t with the rest of our family… I’m sorry.
Despite that, though, I don’t think this year could have been better. I know we’ve been settled in our careers and we’re both completely stable on our own, without “the money”, which is a miracle if you think about it. What may be more of a miracle, though, is the fact that it’s not gotten in the way of a relationship.
I know when we both got the jobs it was a good thing, but I was a little worried. I know sometimes when we’re both stressed out things get tense and we take stuff out on each other. We’ve been a lot better at that and it shows how much we’ve grown. I’m proud of us for that.
This year, I’m also so proud of you. Your promotion is great and I really feel like by the time we have baby 3 (which was supposed to be baby 2), you’ll be on your own. I know you say I’m crazy and the fashion industry doesn’t work like that but no matter how the industry is, I believe in you and really, that is what’s important.
And us, too.
I know that no matter what happens in our lives, our family will be perfect and we’ll always believe in each other. In our kids, and in ourselves. There is no family without you, Kurt. At least not for me.
You also said we should write what we looked forward to next year.
I look forward to spending each day of it waking up next to you and each night of it falling asleep next to you. I look forward to the twins being born and having to get up at all hours of the night to give bottles and snuggles.
I look forward to watching you as a daddy. You’ll be perfect because kids absolutely love you. Not just that, though. You’re kind, patient, understanding, accepting and loving—I’ve never felt as loved as I have felt by you and it warms my heart to know our babies will grow up with you as their father.
I look forward to this next adventure with you. Actually, I look forward to all of them for the rest of our live but you said “next year” so I’ll limit it to that.
Kurt, I love you so much.
Thank you for showing me what family is really meant to be. Thank you for showing me what Christmas is supposed to be like and what feeling loved feels like.
You will always be the thing I’m most grateful for. No matter what we’re going through or where we end up, it’s always going to be you… but I didn’t think you’d be happy if I just wrote a letter saying “You and you.”
I hope this doesn’t sound really lame.
Also, even though this Christmas isn’t how we wanted to spend it or expected it to be, I wouldn’t want to be stuck in this apartment in the middle of a snow Christmas Eve with anyone else but you. As long as I’ve got you, everything is perfect.
I love you so much and I can’t wait until next year when I can say we’ve been married 388 days.
Love forever,
B
Anniversary Surprises
“Wait, what is all of this?” Kurt asked, walking into his thirtieth-floor apartment. “Oh my God, how did you… What?”
“Don’t freak out! I wanted to surprise you!” Blaine rushed over, a bouquet of roses in his hand.
Kurt stared at him, mouth a perfect O.
“Let me get your bag with the super expensive laptop before you drop it and break it and you take these.”
Kurt took the roses, very confused. He had literally been texting Blaine about getting to his apartment and… Blaine was in it?
“It’s been a year since we got back together… right where we’re standing. I know you said that you wanted to celebrate our original anniversary and I do too, but this day is just as special to me… because it’s the day I knew we were forever.”
“Blaine…” Kurt looked past him, seeing his small table set up with dinner and a cheesecake on the counter. He tried to come up with something witty or sweet to say but all he could come up with in his shock was, “You broke into my apartment.”
“Technically you gave David the spare key and he gave it to me, so… okay, I kind of did. But I really wanted to surprise you. I got dinner and the flowers and the cheesecake and I’ve got something else too but I’m hoping I’ll get a kiss here soon.”
Kurt threw his arms around Blaine, careful not to damage his roses, and hugged Blaine tightly. “I love you so much and I am so glad that I get to spend the rest of my life with you.”
Blaine beamed and kissed him.
Kurt then pulled back, hitting his shoulder. “You’re in your last year of law school and you’ve got all of this homework. Blaine.”
““I wanted to see you. It was only a 3.5 mile drive instead of 12 so I was able to justify it.” Blaine smiled. “Also, I’ve got some news…”
“What?” Kurt asked sharply. “Did something happen?”
“Nothing bad. I think you’ll be really happy actually. I wanted you to be the first to know.”
“What? What?” Kurt smiled widely. “What’s going on?”
Blaine laughed, taking the flower from him and setting them on the counter. “Should we eat and—.”
“Anderson, you better spill.”
“Bob talked to me. Well, Adrian and I actually so he knows but only because it involves him…” Blaine began.
“Yes?” Kurt asked impatiently.
“CMJ is expanding.”
“CMJ?” Kurt looked confused.
“The law firm. They’re opening up a location here in New York City and I’ve been offered a full-time position after graduation… in New York City!”
“But you don’t want to live here!” Kurt sputtered. “You can’t do that.”
“Kurt, one of the top law firms in Massachusetts has offered me a job after graduation. I can take it there or follow Bob here and I’m following him here. I don’t think much will change at first because I need pass the Bar to legally practice law. But I’ve been helping with Bob’s for like a year and a half now so he knows what I’m capable of. And I know he’s a hard ass but he’s so knowledgeable and the fact that he offered this up at all is mind-blowing in itself.”
“No, it’s not! You’ve worked for him since you started law school practically.” Kurt responded. “Blaine, are you sure this is what you want, though? In New York City?”
“Yes. Bob talked to Adrian and me for a long time about it. It’s going to be a very small office and first and not many people are coming from the head office. Only three lawyers—two partners and one associate. Then there’ll be paralegals, legal assistants, and legal secretaries.” Blaine explained.
“Three lawyers?” Kurt asked.
“Yes. The one who isn’t a partner will be transferring back to Massachusetts after Adrian and I pass the bar making it a total of four lawyers total. Then we’ll get promotions and after that, they’re going to bring in new lawyers and start building up.” Blaine explained. “Basically, I can move up really fast.”
“Wow.” Kurt stared at him, shocked.
“I mean not insanely fast but… but this is big. It could be it.” Blaine continued, nudging Kurt to the table where their plates were waiting. “I could stay where I’m at… or I could take a better opportunity and live with the love of my life in a city that he loves. It’s a no brainer, really.”
“Oh my God, Blaine. You’re coming to New York?”
“The week after graduation. Also, I get reimbursed for moving fees and they’ll pay the first three months of my rent. Our rent. We can get somewhere nicer than this.” Blaine said excitedly. “I mean it might not be that much better but hopefully it won’t be on the thirtieth floor.”
“Since Quinn moved out, it’s really expensive anyway.” Kurt agreed, albeit somewhat sadly. It was really… nice having a place all to yourself.
“And we’ll get somewhere close to parks and maybe a dog park for Winnie and Kreacher. Kurt, it’s going to be so good.” Blaine looked more excited than Kurt had seen him in… well, maybe ever. “Like the light at the end of the tunnel. I just… I know at first it won’t be a lot but in two years… I may make enough to pay for an entire apartment and to live comfortably just by myself.”
“You don’t have to worry about paying for a place to live by yourself. I don’t want you to take care of me. It’ll be like in Ohio, half and half unless someone comes up a bit short here and there.” Kurt promised. “And, honestly, we could stay here and save but I would love to not have a five-minute elevator ride every time I take Kreacher out to go to the bathroom.”
“I only lived in a dorm for three months at UK. It’s going to be weird for me to live in an apartment.” Blaine admitted. “I don’t know if I’ll want to live in an apartment forever, though. Is that okay? Is that a deal breaker for you?”
“Of course it’s not a deal breaker! Can you imagine living in an apartment with children and two dogs?” Kurt leaned forward and kissed him. “I’m so proud of you, Blaine.”
“Thanks.” Blaine grinned.
Kurt pulled back to look him in the eyes. “Honestly. Despite what you went through living with your horrible family… you proved them wrong and you did it without their help. You’re amazing, Blaine. You got into Harvard Law. You’ve still got three months to go and already have a job lined up. I’m just so proud of you and I’m so happy to have you as my partner. You’re amazing.”
“I’m so proud of you too. You’ve had great internships, everyone loves your stuff, your social media page is already at half a million and you’re doing school projects. Can you imagine what it will be like when you don’t have these guidelines to stay within? When you can do exactly what you want with no strings attached? I have no doubt that within five years your salary will blow mine out of the water—that’s including the inheritance I may or may not even get.” Blaine didn’t look away. “If I’m amazing, you’re fucking epic.”
“You have been hanging out with Wes too much.” Kurt threw his arms around Blaine’s neck again. “I’m so excited you’re coming to New York. I know we could have stayed long distance still but… I’m so glad we won’t have to. This is amazing and I’m so proud of you. Screw the anniversary, we should be celebrating you.”
Blaine laughed and squeezed Kurt. “I love you so much. I love you and I cannot wait until we’ve been together ten years or fifteen or twenty. I can’t wait to spend every day of my life with you and I truly mean it.”
“Oh God, Blaine. You did it.” Kurt pulled back, eyes a bit teary. “After everything you had to go through with your family… you really did it. You showed them. You showed all of them. Alex will be so proud, Dad and Carole will be so proud, Wes’ and David’s parents… I think your grandfather would too.”
Blaine pulled him back in for another hug. “Thank you for believing in me.”
Kurt squeezed Blaine and then kissed his cheek. “We’re going to eat and then we’re going to David’s and call Wes and you’re going to tell them. And then we’ll call Carole and Dad. And the first chance we can both get to Ohio together, we’re going to throw a huge dinner for you because you deserve it. You deserve it so much.”
Blaine grinned.
“I do have some news for you too, though.” Kurt pulled away.
“You do?” Blaine asked excitedly.
“I have an interview for Marc Jacobs.”
“KURT! Why didn’t you tell me?!” Blaine pulled back.
“I just found out and I guess you beat me to it!” Kurt stepped back. “I mean yours is a solid offer. Mine is an interview, really.”
“Come on, you’ve talked to him like five times at Parsons. He’s even told you he likes your stuff.” Blaine deadpanned. “You’ve got this in the bag.”
“We don’t know that.” Kurt rolled his eyes but was smiling. “He just asked if I wanted to interview—.”
“He as in Marc?”
“He as in Marc!” Kurt squealed a bit but then took a deep breath. “Just an interview… just an interview…. “
“Uh, yeah, with Marc Jacobs!” Blaine exclaimed. “It’s a good thing I got this job here because there’s no way I would have let you turn that down.”
Kurt pulled Blaine close, kissing him. “I love you.”
“I love you too.” Blaine kissed him back. “Happy anniversary, my love.”
“Happy anniversary.” Kurt beamed, nuzzling his head in the crook between Blaine’s neck and shoulder.
Everything was working out exactly as they’d hoped it would.
Double Date (Plus One)
“Long time no see, stranger.” Adrian grinned, coming up to Kurt and Blaine in a restaurant. “Hey, Kurt!”
“Hey!” Kurt got up to hug Adrian. “I heard you’re getting married.”
Adrian shot Blaine a look.
“I heard it through Wes who heard it from AJ.” Blaine held up his hands in self-defense.
“But there’s a ring you’re wearing on a necklace because it isn’t official yet.” Kurt pointed to his neck.
“Wait, you are?!” Blaine asked.
“Okay well we can’t exactly come out and say anything right now because of…” Adrian hesitated.
“Because of what? How can you not wear the ring?” Kurt asked. “Can I see it?”
“I wasn’t able to take the ring off for five months when Kurt proposed to me. I was terrified I’d lose it. And if I take it off now, I feel like part of me is missing.”
“I want to wear it.” Adrian huffed, sitting across from Kurt and Blaine.
“So why isn’t it ‘official’?” Kurt, who did not care to pry, asked eagerly. “Is it because of his daughter?”
“No.” Blaine answered for him. “She loves Adrian.”
“And why does he never come with you all? Is it because of Blaine? Blaine’s bark is much bigger than his bite.” Kurt patted Blaine’s leg.
“Is not.” Blaine whined, taking a sip of his sweet tea and lemonade.
“Emily had ballet. He said he’d try to swing by with her after but it may be too late.” Adrian told Kurt.
“Okay. We’ll make this take a long time then.” Kurt chirped.
“Why isn’t it official?” Blaine repeated Kurt’s question from earlier.
“Our immediate family members know and, obviously, my friends as you can tell. I should have expected AJ to tell Wes because they’re married and by proxy he would tell Blaine and then… it’s just this friend circle, you guys. Fuck it. I told him I can’t keep a secret unless I’m legally obligated.” Adrian took his necklace off and slipped on his ring. He then spoke in a lower voice. “They’re selling.”
“What?” Blaine gasped. “The firm?”
“Yeah.” Adrian nodded. “Kyle’s dad wants to stay home and watch Emily while Kyle and I work. He said he’s getting too old to maintain everything like he used to. He offered it to Kyle and… Emily’s six, okay? He doesn’t have the time to do anything like that… so they’re selling.”
“To who?” Blaine asked.
Kurt slapped his hand down on the table. “CMJ!”
“Ding ding.” Adrian nodded as Kurt smiled smugly. “Obviously it’s hardly the time to be announcing our upcoming nuptials at work at least.”
“They’ve been in business for, like, three generations.” Blaine said. “Why would Kyle not want it?”
“ADRIANNNNN!”
Adrian, who had opened his mouth to answer, grinned and opened his arms suddenly. A three-foot-tall purple blur jumped into his arms. “Emilyyyyy!”
“Hi, Emily!” Kurt waved.
“Say hi to Kurt and Blaine too, Emily.” Adrian’s boyfriend—fiancé— came up behind Kurt and Blaine. He then said very politely, “Hello, guys.”
“Did you know that Adrian is my new daddy? I’m going to have two.” Emily asked Blaine, plopping on Adrian’s left side directly in front of him. “Two!”
“Two dads?” Blaine asked as Kyle sat down as well, leaving Adrian in the middle. “That’s kind of awesome.”
“Congratulations.” Kurt said, smiling.
“Oh, thanks.” Kyle smiled and took a drink of Adrian’s water. He then set a bag on the table. “I know that you guys are having twins but I found some outfits that we got when Emily was still… erm, cooking. We didn’t want to know the sex before. These are the boy stuff and some of the neutral stuff. It’s been washed but all the boy stuff hasn’t been worn and…”
“You are so sweet!” Kurt exclaimed, pulling the bag towards him.
“Thank you.” Blaine smiled. It was still odd for both being as they were pretty much rivals on the court floor, but they were both making it work for Adrian’s sake.
“No problem. I mean, I’m not using it.” Kyle shrugged. “Someone should get to use it, right? There’s some pretty cute stuff in there.”
“So how did it happen?” Kurt asked excitedly. “Did you have someone taking photos?”
“Of course.” Kyle said, laughing. He got out his cell phone and handed it over. “He pretty much told me a year ago if I was the one who proposed and didn’t have someone take pictures, he’d say no. My sister did them.”
“These are really good! And so cute!” Kurt showed Blaine. “Look! Remember when I proposed to you? Our pictures weren’t nearly this good.”
“Well she’s a photographer.” Kyle cut in quickly.
“Ah.” Kurt nodded, handing Kyle his phone back. “That’s why… Aww, congratulations. These pictures are so cute.”
“Are you guys excited for the twins to be born? It won’t be too long now.” He asked.
“It’s kind of terrifying.” Blaine admitted.
“You’re terrified?” Kurt asked, looking surprised.
“You’re not?” Blaine asked.
“Don’t be worried about them being babies. When they’re mobile and vocal… that’s when you should be terrified. I can’t tell you how many times she has thrown me under the bus.” Kyle said, pointing at Emily who was sneaking fries from Adrian’s plate. “To my own dad and I think everyone at this table knows he’s slightly terrifying.”
“Is it as bad at night as people say?” Kurt asked.
“Let’s put it this way… be glad there’s two of you and you can take turns. I didn’t have that luxury with her.” Kyle pointed at her again.
“Stop pointing at me, Dad.” Emily whined. “Blaine, can I have a piece of your broccoli?”
“Can you eat off your own plate? You have the same broccoli and the same fries.” Adrian laughed.
“If I eat mine, then it’ll be gone. If I eat yours, then yours will be gone and I’ll still have mine.” Emily chirped.
Kurt covered his mouth to keep from laughing.
“Can you tell she comes from a family of lawyers?” Kyle asked, rolling his eyes. “Eat your own food, okay?”
“Fine.” Emily sighed and began to eat her own fries. She beamed when Adrian put some of his fries on her plate, even more so when Kyle shot him a look.
“Seriously, it’ll never be as easy as when they’re babies. I promise you that. I miss when she couldn’t talk a mile a minute.” Kyle resumed. “And forget going to the bathroom in peace. It’s like they have a sixth sense. I’ll barely get the door closed before she barges in or stands outside it yelling for me… Maybe I should take that position.”
“Dad!” Emily whined again.
Kyle leaned back, putting his arm behind Adrian and ruffling her hair. “It’s not bad. You’ll be tired but it’ll be worth it. The second you get to hold your baby, it’s life changing. You never know you can feel that way for this thing that looks like a little alien but even when it’s rough, you just know it’s worth it. And you can always call me if you’re having a crisis. Believe me, I called my sister all the time… I still do, actually.”
“Wait, did you do it on your own?” Kurt asked.
“Mostly, yeah. After she was about two weeks old.” Kyle nodded.
Kurt, although curious, didn’t ask more questions. It obviously wouldn’t have been appropriate since Emily was right there. He did, however, make a mental note to ask Adrian later.
“That’s amazing.” Blaine said. “And she was born when you first got out of law school, right?”
“Right after I passed the Bar.” Kyle nodded. “The fact that my dad owns—owned the firm came in handy. And I worked from home a lot too.”
“Talk about a lot of life changes at once.” Adrian snorted.
“The way I see it is I got it out of the way. New job, new kid, new life within the span of a month.” Kyle shrugged. “But it’ll be fine. Seriously. Give it five months and the twins will probably sleep through the night and it’s smooth sailing from there… unless they’re anything like her.”
“Grandpa says I’m perfect.” Emily retorted before crawling on Adrian’s lap and curling up to him.
“Yeah, Kyle. Grandpa says she’s perfect.” Adrian grinned, patting Emily’s head.
Kurt smiled, watching Adrian with Emily.
“She’s going to fall asleep soon. As soon as she crawls into Adrian’s lap at night, it’s done.” Kyle laughed.
“Kurt, can you help me wedding plan? I know Kyle won’t do it.” Adrian asked, rocking Emily.
“Oh my God, yes. I have missed wedding planning so much!” Kurt nodded eagerly. “Do you two know when you want to get married yet?”
“Within the year.” Kyle said.
“Year?” Adrian’s eyes widened.
“Yeah. Within the year if that’s okay.” Kyle nodded. “Why wait? We’ve both got vacation days saved up.”
“Disney World?” Emily sat up straight, looking half asleep.
“Sure, why not.” Adrian shrugged. “We’ll honeymoon in Disney World.”
Kyle pulled a face.
“Excellent.” Emily relaxed against Adrian again before closing her eyes.
“He’s such a push over.” Kyle told Blaine.
“Oh, I know. I lived with him in law school.” Blaine nodded in agreement. “Makes him very easy to live with… much easier than Kurt.”
Kurt punched his arm. “Anyway, Adrian, I would love to help you. But we should probably let you two go since she’s falling asleep.”
“Yeah. I have two cribs to build.” Blaine groaned, standing and stretching. “Fun times ahead… Wonder if AJ would care if Wes came to help me.”
“Oh, Wes is in the dog house.” Adrian said, standing carefully with Emily after Kyle stood up.
“How do you know everything?” Kyle sputtered.
“We have a circle of friends. It’s kind of weird, really. Also, people just like to tell me everything.” Adrian shrugged.
“Better you than me. I can barely keep up with what they tell me.” Blaine shrugged. “Except for David and Wes but, you know.”
“Thanks for coming, Kyle. I know sitting at a table across from Blaine for an hour must be torture.” Kurt joked. “But it sounds like you two may have to get along better now anyway.”
“It’s not bad.” Kyle reassured Kurt, reaching over and ruffling Emily’s hair. “But thanks for having us. Me and Emily, that is. We like to crash parties.”
“Call me, Kurt.” Adrian said, grunting as he passed Emily off to Kyle.
“Do you guys need a ride?” Blaine asked.
“No. We’re close.” Adrian promised. “See you soon, Kurt! See you tomorrow, Blaine.”
“See ya.” Blaine grabbed Kurt’s hand, leading him in the direction of their car.
“I told you he’s not so bad… and he gave us baby clothes.” Kurt beamed.
“I know he’s not that bad. It’s still an adjustment.” Blaine shrugged. “He’s nice outside of work.”
“People think you’re a hard ass too.” Kurt pointed out. “They make such a cute couple. Adrian is so cute with Emily. I wonder if he’ll adopt her.”
“Oh, definitely. They’ve all three talked about it… Adrian’s been around since she was three. She calls him ‘daddy’ at home.” Blaine nodded.
“That’s so sweet.” Kurt cooed. “They’re so cute.”
Blaine pouted. “You used to say we were cute all of the time until we got married. Are we old news now, Kurt?”
“Of course not.” Kurt stopped walking and wrapped his arms around Blaine’s next. “I can’t wait to see you with the twins. What if they both get your curls?”
“They’ll hate me for it.” Blaine laughed and rested his hands on Kurt’s waist.
“They may but it’ll still be cute.” Kurt gave him an impish smile. “Maybe we should head home and spend some time together… since soon we won’t have very much time alone.
“Oh?” Blaine smirked.
“Mhm.” Kurt grabbed the car keys out of Blaine’s pants pocket. “How fast do you think I can get us home?”
“I’m betting twenty minutes.”
“Challenge accepted, Anderson.”
First Day Back
///TRIGGER WARNING: ANOREXIA///
“Hey, Nicky.” David said, smiling brightly when Nick and Kurt came into his office.
“Hey.” Nick mumbled, taking off the jacket he was wearing.
“Glad to be back home?” David asked as Nick hopped onto the bed.
“Haven’t made it home yet. My exit plan agreement said I had to come here first thing after making it to New York.” Nick admitted.
“We’ll try to make it quick, okay?” David asked, taking a folder from Kurt. “I went over last night. There’s no diet food, no diet pills, and no scales in the entire house.”
“Thanks.” Kurt smiled, sitting in one of the chairs. “We appreciate it… right, Nick?”
“Mhmm.” Nick gave a small nod although they could tell he wasn’t really listening.
Kurt chewed on his lower lip, making eye contact with David.
“Alright, so they got the bloodwork and everything already…” David said aloud to himself. “The heartbeat is a bit more regular but it’ll get better over time… your blood pressure too, we’ll check those today… and it looks like your liver is recovering on its own.”
Kurt let out a relieved sigh.
“Okay, Nick. Can we take off your shirt and take a listen?”
“You say it like I have a choice.” Nick tugged his shirt off.
“Nick…” Kurt whispered.
“It’s fine, Kurt.” David said as Nick sighed. He listened to Nick’s lungs and heartbeat, then tested his blood pressure. “You’re doing so much better than before you went into treatment… and you’ve gained eleven pounds which is amazing. You’re doing really good.”
Nick nodded, offering a very forced smile.
“How do you feel?” David asked him.
“I’m always tired.” Nick said softly, nothing like the loud pleasant tone David was used to always hearing. “I don’t like the medicine they want me to take. It makes my head floaty. Can you look at it?”
David frowned and opened the chart back up, flipping through the pages until he found the medications. “Yeah, we can change this up. Are you having trouble sleeping any?”
“No.” Nick shook his head.
“I know this is a stupid question but are you feeling depressed?” David asked gently, making eye contact.
“Yes.” Nick took a deep breath, tears welling in his eyes.
“Are you anxious?” David didn’t break eye contact.
“Yeah.”
“Do you have any thoughts of suicide?”
“Nothing serious.” Nick whispered so Kurt couldn’t hear his answer. “But some.”
“Stomach feeling okay? Are you keeping food down okay?” David asked him.
“It feels better… I keep stuff down more but sometimes I do throw up.” Nick admitted.
“But it’s better than it was now that you’re eating three meals and four snacks a day?”
“Yes.” Nick nodded, shivering a bit.
“You can put your shirt on.” David grabbed his clipboard, giving Nick some time to mentally recuperate. He turned to Kurt. “Did you guys find a therapist?”
“Someone Eric knows recommended an office in the city for group therapy and a separate office for one on one sessions.” Kurt responded, watching Nick rub his eyes.
David looked up when Blaine rushed in. “Sorry I’m late, Nicky. Traffic was horrible.”
“It’s okay, Dad.” Nick said, relaxing against Blaine when he hugged him tightly. He leaned back when Blaine ran a hand soothingly up and down his back.
“It looks like they’re recommending he go four times a week for one on one sessions but he was in a six-week program… I would say do three months going three times a week and then move to two times a week.” David continued. “I mean that paired with group sessions… it’s exhausting enough without overdoing it.”
Blaine nodded.
“You saw the nutritionist before me, right?” David asked Nick.
“Yes.” Nick nodded.
“Just stick to what she says. Keep seeing her, calling her, emailing her. If there’s anything you can’t stomach, cut it out.” David made eye contact with him. “And I’m going to put you on some medicine, okay? One for depression and one for anxiety as needed. If it doesn’t help, please let me know… I want this to be as easy for you as it can be, Nicky.”
“Thanks.” Tears filled Nick’s eyes.
“What’s wrong?” Kurt rushed over.
“I don’t want to have to take depression medicine.” Nick covered his face. “Oh God.”
Blaine wrapped his arms around him tightly and began rocking him back and forth.
“It’s not forever, Nick.” David put a hand on his leg. “It’s just to help you feel better. More like yourself.”
Nick let out two sobs.
“You don’t have to take it… but I think you should for a month and see if you feel any different. It’s nothing you’ll be dependent on…. Just something to help keep the bad thoughts away, alright?” David moved his hand to Nick’s shoulder.
“Alright.” Nick cried, nodding.
“It’s okay.” Blaine whispered, rocking Nick back and forth. “It’s okay, babe. You’ve got this. You’re doing so good.”
David glanced at Kurt, who was staring straight ahead and blinking rapidly.
“You’ve got so many people in your corner. We’re all here and will be until this is over and behind us, okay?” Blaine continued whispering. “Just let us help you.”
“I’m trying.” Nick choked out.
“We know. We know.” Blaine nodded. “Just let us help a bit longer and it’ll all be over.”
“It will be over sooner than you think, Nick. Recovery is hard but in the end, you’ll be so glad to be back to your old self.” David said. “And you know my cell phone number. Anything you need, Nicky, and you just call me. I’ll drop anything.”
Nick pulled from Blaine’s arms and reached for David, still crying.
David stepped up closer, hugging him. “You’re doing so well. So, so well.”
“Thank you.” Nick pulled back. “Thank you for being such a good godfather and treating me normal. The doctors there just… thank you.”
“Anytime.” David pulled him in for another hug. “You know I’m always a call or text away. Wes too, and Alec, Eric, Adrian and Kyle… if you ever need to talk to someone who isn’t Kurt or Blaine, you’ve got so many people to talk to. I know it can be harder to talk to them about some of this stuff but you’ve got so many people to help you out.”
“I know.” Nick nodded.
“Get home and take a nap, okay?” David pulled back. “You’ve done great this past six weeks, you’ve done great today, and you’re going to keep doing great until all of this is behind you.”
“Okay.” Nick got off the bed, walking to Kurt for his jacket.
Kurt held it out, taking a deep breath. This was just another step towards recovery. They’d tackle it like the last two.
“Get him the medicine… Don’t force him to take it. You know how it is… I think it’ll help but if he doesn’t want it, he’ll get through without it.” David told Blaine. “I want him to have it if it helps.”
“Yeah. Okay.” Blaine took the prescriptions.
“I’m going to go through the medicines they’ve got him on… I’ll send down new prescriptions for you before I leave today and you can pick them up tomorrow. I’ll come by tonight after work and talk to Nick about them… and I want to get him a book or two for depression.” David sighed, watching Kurt wrap an arm around him. “Make sure Kurt gets some rest, okay? And I wouldn’t have any visitors over for a while… I don’t think Nick’s up to it yet. Maybe Wes or family but…”
“We know. I’ve already talked to everyone. We don’t want anything to set him back.” Blaine nodded.
“Right. Well, Nick, I’ll come and see you tonight. Go home and get some sleep in your own bed, alright?” David asked.
“Okay.” Nick nodded, looking a bit better after his crying. “Thanks, David.”
“No need.” David went up, pulling Kurt into a hug. “You’re doing awesome.”
“Thanks.” Kurt hugged him back as Nick walked out of the room.
Blaine gave Wes a wave before following Nick out.
“Listen, you’re doing so good. Nick appreciates everything. And he’s going to be fine.”
“He said… suicide thoughts.” Tears filled Kurt’s eyes.
“Listen, Kurt… it’s not unheard of for people in recovery to feel these things… and that douche completely broke him down mentally. If I thought he was going to harm himself I wouldn’t let him leave. If the people at the center he just left thought so, they’d have had him sent somewhere else. He has to work through this stuff mentally but he’ll get over this.” David reassured him, making eye contact.
“I don’t know what to do besides be with him.” Kurt wiped his eyes.
“That’s what he needs.” David promised. “Just be with him. Check on him, hold him accountable, and let him know how proud you are… and you already do that. You’re doing perfect and he… he doesn’t want to worry you. But he’s going to come to you. You’re the one that’s slept with him every night for six weeks, Kurt. You’re his recovery partner and all he needs you to do is exactly what you’ve been doing. He’s doing so much better; he really is. You’re doing awesome.”
Kurt wiped his eyes again and nodded.
“I’m here for you too. If you want to talk, text me. Call me. Whatever. I’m always here for you too.” David hugged him.
“Thanks. I… Thanks.” Kurt pulled back after returning the hug. “I’m going to catch up with them, but thanks.”
“I’ll see you guys tonight.” David smiled, waving. “It’ll be okay, Kurt.”
Family Vacation
“Family meeting time, okay?” Nick chirped as soon as Kurt got downstairs from putting Kris to sleep.
“Oh God, not again.” Blaine groaned. “No, we’re not buying you that car. You agreed on the jeep and that’s what you’re getting. I refuse to let your first car be a Maserati, okay? Not all of kids are like Kurt and get fancy cars when they get their licenses.”
“What can I say? My dad must have liked me more than Blaine likes you.” Kurt teased, ruffling Nick’s hair.
“This isn’t about the car.” Nick said.
“It’s about Disney. Come on, we’re too old.” Sophie cut in. “The three of us don’t want to go.”
“Uhm, hi? Me?” Zach, who was sitting in an armchair on the other side of the room and reading a book, looked up and raised his hand. “I love Disney.”
“Fine. The two of us don’t want to go.” Nick said. “Can’t we just stay home?”
“Yeah.” Blaine said, tone serious. “We’re going to let our sixteen-year-old sons and fourteen-year-old daughter stay home alone for a week.”
Zach snickered.
“We already told you. If you don’t want to go, there are numerous options. Rachel and Finn, Wes and AJ, David and Marcy, Alec and Eric, Adrian and Kyle, Paige and Taylor.” Kurt counted the couples on his hand.
Nick fell back onto the couch, groaning.
“Maybe if you weren’t Mr. Popular it’d be another story.” Blaine added. “But I went to enough parties when parents were out of town and it’s not happening here.”
“Can I stay with Ryan?” Nick asked for the fifth time.
“No. His parents are out of town for a month. I’m surprised they let him stay home alone.” Kurt shook his head.
“They trust him.” Nick said, prompting another snicker from Zach. “Zach, you’re not helping.”
“It’s pointless. They’re not going to let us stay home alone for that long.” Zach responded.
“Can I stay with Grandma and Grandpa?” Sophie asked.
“Baby, we don’t have time to get you there before we go.” Kurt sighed. “I wish we’d planned it a little better but with work…”
“Why can’t I fly by myself?” Sophie asked.
“You’re fourteen.” Blaine said. “That’s too young.”
“It’s not fair.” Sophie whined, sitting on the couch with Nick. “We’re responsible.”
“It’s Nick’s friends we’re worried about.” Blaine retorted.
“Put it on me, okay.” Nick huffed. “Thanks, Dad.”
“Welcome.” Blaine grinned. “Go stay with Adrian and Kyle. You love hanging out with them.”
“They banter too much to be around them for seven days. I’d want to kill someone. Can I stay with Lance?”
“No.” Kurt sighed. “I don’t want to have this discussion again. We’re taking your brother to Disney just like we took you to Disney. If you go, you are going to act happy to be there. If you don’t go, you have ten different people to decide to stay with. I do not want to hear any more complaining about it. Do you think Blaine and I like driving you across the state for soccer tournaments when we could be spending time together on our weekends? No, we don’t. Suck it up like we do. And, Sophie, you suck it up too. The twins sat through countless Disney on Ice when you were Kris’ age. You’re older than Kris so its your turn now.”
Nick groaned, rolling himself off the couch and burying his face in the rug.
“Spending time with your entire family isn’t the end of the world, Nick.” Blaine rolled his eyes.
“If we were going somewhere cool, it’d be another story. If we were going with more… people.” Nick’s eyes lit up. “Can Ryan come?”
“Can Jessica come?!” Sophie squealed.
“N-Nobody is coming! It’s a family trip!” Kurt exclaimed. “It’s a family trip and we won’t get many more before you kids go off to college so, no, nobody can come! If you don’t want to go, then stay with one of our friends but no. Nobody is coming with us.”
“Great, make Daddy think about us going to college in two years. Good job, Nick.” Zach sighed.
“Fine. Fine.” Nick huffed. “I’ll go.”
Kurt nodded, still looking upset.
“You said family trip… can Melody come?” Zach asked.
“YES! YOU’RE A GENIUS, ZACH!” Nick nodded. “Yes! Can Melody come? I’d be so awesome!”
“My sister might come and all of a sudden you guys are excited?” Kurt scoffed.
“Kurt, think about it… She can make sure they don’t get into too much trouble while we’re on the little kid rides with Kris.” Blaine said gently. “She was wanting to stay the last part of summer with us anyway.”
“Wait, what?” Kurt sputtered. “Why am I the last to know everything in this house?”
“She’s going to call you later tonight.” Blaine shrugged. “But it’s a good solution… and she’s always traveling everywhere for work. It’ll be nice to see her for more than a weekend.”
“I don’t care if she goes, obviously. I am just highly offended that a trip with us worth seven family meetings but if she goes, it’s the best thing that’s ever happened. Sophie’s so excited she’s practically bouncing in her seat.”
“I texted her and she’s innnn!” Sophie squealed and stood, beginning to dance. “Yes, yes, yes!”
“I am not boring. People love me. I’ve been on TV, Oprah is interviewing the family, and my own children don’t want to go on vacation even though the twins will be gone in two years and Sophie will be gone in four and Kris in twelve.” Kurt continued.
“I’ve said I wanted to go the whole time.” Zach said, although nobody could even hear him over Sophie’s singing and dancing.
“PARTY!” Kris ran into the room, skidding to a stop in front of Nick. “Why am I never invited to the parties?”
“Because you have a bed time.” Nick picked him up and then hung him upside down. “Gimme your lunch money, gimme your lunch money!”
“I don’t have lunch money, I’m only six and in pajamas!” Kris shrieked between giggles.
“Why do I want to become a vet? Clearly I already live in a zoo.” Zach said aloud.
“Can I be a penguin?” Kris asked, still hanging upside down.
“If you’re a penguin I’m a dinosaur!” Nick shouted and tossed him onto the couch. He then began to attack him. “Rooooooar!”
“If I took a video of this, do you think Oprah would air it in our episode?” Blaine yelled over Nick and Kris’ yelling.
“Don’t you fucking dare, Blaine!” Kurt threatened, running over to grab Blaine’s phone.
“Zoo.” Zach repeated, seeing Sophie still dancing and singing in the corner of the room. “I live in a zoo.”

Sorry for no drabble yesterday… so here’s one that’s over 3,000 words!
TW: ANOREXIA
…
Nick had been quiet since beginning to take his medicine.
Okay, he had been quiet since he collapsed and everything fell apart, but now it was worse. He didn’t come to them when his stomach was hurting, he didn’t make comments about the food they made, he didn’t protest over what was on his plate, and he didn’t react above the bare minimum when he was spoken to.
Blaine understood, more than Nick would have believed. He never talked about how bad he had been at points in his life with any of the kids… really, he hadn’t needed to.
It was important to do it now. To let Nick know that someone close to him had been on the medicine, that it was horrible at first but eventually it made a positive impact in his overall well being.
He walked upstairs to Nick’s room, looking in the doorway. Nick was sitting on his bed, still in his pajamas from last night, and staring down at his phone with a lost expression.
“Nick?” Blaine asked softly.
Nick jumped and locked his phone, looking up. When he realized that it was Blaine, he relaxed a bit and then looked back down.
“How are you?”
“Okay.” Nick did not look up.
Blaine came in, sitting on the edge of the bed next to his son. “Zach, Sarah, and the baby are coming.”
“Cool.” Nick bit his lip, an unreadable expression on his face.
“You should come out when they get here. You’ve not seen Ellie yet… she’ll be six months soon.” Blaine said gently, watching him.
“I don’t want to.”
“Why?” Blaine’s tone didn’t change.
“Because I’m a horrible excuse for a brother and uncle.” Nick sighed.
“You are not.” Blaine reached up, brushing back some of Nick’s hair. His heart sunk when Nick scooted back as if he was about to be hit, but he continued speaking as though nothing had happened. It was better for both that way. “Zach and Sarah understand…”
Nick got off the bed, crossing his arms in front of his chest.
“I know part of what you’re going through.”
“How would you know that?” Nick scoffed.
“Because when I was sixteen, I almost… took a whole bottle of Tylenol… a bottle of 80 of them.” Blaine looked down.
“What?” Nick sat back down on the bed, eyes wide.
“My parents were…horrible. They sent me to conversion camp for five summers. They isolated me from everything during summer.” Blaine began. “And after the day I had come out when I was eleven, my dad would tell me I should been have drowned when they had me… and stuff like that.”
Nick stared at him.
“There’s nothing basic to it, but basically after I wanted to take the bottle… I permanently moved in with David but I stayed with Wes and his family a lot too. David’s dad spent like three hours talking me down the night I almost did it. The next morning, I met with a counselor and she put me on medicine for anxiety and depression as well as sleeping medicine because the anxiety medicine made me very jittery.”
Nick blinked, still watching him. His father had been on depression medicine? And anxiety medicine? He always seemed so happy, though.
“I just mean to explain that… I know what it’s like to want to give up or to not care what happens to you after being stepped on so many times.”
Tears filled Nick’s eyes—Blaine’s words hit him hard. Despite the different experiences the two had gone through, everything… made so much sense.
“I am so terrified that this happened to you because of me.” Blaine took a deep breath, pulling his knees to his chest. “I… I always let stuff go too far and I… I was really hoping I wouldn’t ruin you kids with my emotional issues… I’m not as strong as you are, Nicky. And when you were so afraid to come out at first…”
Nick watched him, holding his breath.
“The things you said and your body language when you would talk about it… I saw myself when I was sixteen and seventeen… and I was afraid that you would end up like me… and you did, just in a different way.” Blaine frowned. “I’m so sorry, Nick.”
“This isn’t your fault.” Nick looked at Blaine like he was insane. “I… uhm…”
Blaine watched him, confused.
“It all started because Coach wanted me to lose ten pounds.” Nick’s hands began to shake. “And I cut back on calories and I lost the weight and then… the guy I was roommates with, we… got together. It was okay until it wasn’t. And he would make comments about my weight and I cut back more and it’d get better and… eventually I had cut too many calories and then I’d skip meals and…” Nick covered his face.
“I am so sorry.” Blaine whispered.
“I knew what I was doing. That’s why I didn’t text or call… I was ashamed. And I missed seeing the baby and I felt disgusted with myself and then I was too ashamed to come on Thanksgiving because I had lost so much weight a-and Christmas, Daddy made me feel so guilty for not coming both times, and I just… I pushed everyone away.”
“I am so sorry.” Blaine repeated, eyes teary.
“It’s not your fault is what I’m trying to say. I-I did it to myself. I should have quit at the ten pounds. I shouldn’t have gotten with the guy but in the beginning, he was so nice and I felt so understood and loved and then it turned really bad really fast.” Nick began to cry. “But it’s not your fault. It’s mine, Daddy.”
There was the ‘Daddy’ again. Blaine was only ‘Daddy’ to either of the twins if they were really upset or something really bad had happened. Being called Daddy by them wrenched his stomach in ways he never knew was possible before he had kids.
“I wasn’t ready. I wanted it so b-bad and I fucked it up. I feel like a part of me is gone. Not just soccer, though. Or even the anorexia and the hunger… Before the pills, I could feel pain and disgust at myself and I could feel hunger.” Nick rook a deep breath, rubbing his eyes again. “Now I feel hollow… like I’m muted. My body still works but I’m not really there.”
“I can understand that.” Blaine sniffled. “I felt like that at first.”
“It’s like I’m gray.” Nick wiped tears from his face. “It’s like I’m gray and all I can see is gray around me.”
Blaine reached up again, much slower this time. He cupped Nick’s cheek in his hand and made eye contact. “It takes some time to adjust. It took me three months to feel somewhat normal again… and if you skip it and then start again, it makes it worse… but I felt gray too.”
Nick let out a strangled wail, bending over and burying his face in his mattress. “I don’t want to take it, Daddy. I want to b-be happy again. I want to feel normal.”
“I know it’s not what you want to hear but the medicine will help you cope.” Blaine bent down, arms going around him in a hug. “It’s so hard but it gets better. It takes about a month for your brain to register and it gets a little easier until you feel some semblance of normal. It will happen for you, Nicky. I know it will. You are so much stronger than I am. I know you can fight this and in a year or two, probably two, this will be behind you.”
“H-H-How long did you take them?” Nick hiccupped, not raising up.
“Almost two years… I was still on them when I met Kurt.” Blaine admitted. “I was on a lower dosage to ween off it, but it was one year and eleven months before I was off it completely. The transition but it was much easier than getting on them.”
“W-What happens then? When you go off?”
“When I started taking the medicine I lost a lot of weight.” Blaine admitted. “I wasn’t sure if I was losing baby fat or what, but after I went off the medicine half of it came back. My appetite changed too.”
Nick nodded.
“The important thing is that the medicine helped me be me again. That is what matters. That it helps you and when you are where you want to be, you ween yourself off. I was ashamed to have to take it but… without it, I would not have met Kurt… at least, not in the way I did. Who knows if we would have even gotten to know each other if I was like a shell of myself? I wouldn’t have made it to Harvard because I had no confidence what so ever. Who knows what you could miss out on if you don’t let it help you? Nick, you are a beautiful and lovable person. In my heart, I know that after this you will be truly happy. You can have anything in the world that you want, Nicky. Kurt and I want that for you—we all want that for you.”
“It’s so hard to even breathe. I feel like I’m constantly fighting to catch my breath.” Nick wiped his eyes, finally pushing himself into a sitting position.
“I know.” Blaine looked him in the eyes. “I know, but it gets better.”
“Do you promise?” Nick looked at him pitifully.
“I promise.” Blaine leaned over, kissing the top of his head. “Come on downstairs with me. We’ll find something funny on TV until Zach gest here. Okay?”
Nick hesitated.
Blaine stood, holding out his hand. “Come on.”
Nick took his hand and crawled out of bed.
“We’re going to get you through this. I promise you. You are going to get through this.”
Nick nodded, sniffling. “Thank you, Dad.”
“You’re welcome.” Blaine kissed the top of his head again and led him downstairs.
…
“Nick!” Sarah ran to him, throwing her arms around them. “Oh, Nick! I didn’t think you’d be downstairs! I’m so happy to see you!”
“Hey.” Nick hugged her back—nowhere near as tight as his hugs usually were.
Zach passed Sarah the baby and hugged Nick tightly—any other time he’d visited, Nick hadn’t said a word.
“I-I’m sorry.” Nick choked out.
“No. No, don’t.” Zach pulled back, shaking his head. “Please don’t. I… I understand. I’m not upset that you wouldn’t talk before, okay? I just want you to focus on getting better.”
Nick pulled Zach in for another hug, his shoulders starting to shake.
“It’s—It’s okay, I promise. Here, I uh… I have someone I’d like you to officially meet.” Zach pulled back.
“No, I might drop her.” Nick shook his head before wiping his eyes. “Sometimes I get shaky.”
Sarah came up to him. “Sit down with me on the big chair.”
“I really don’t…” Nick’s eyes were wide.
Zach edged him towards the chair that was big enough for both Sarah and Nick to sit close together—the two had sat in it many times before they’d all gone off to college. Nick and Sarah had been good friends for years before she got together with Zach.
Nick sat down, chest pounding. Sarah sat next to him.
“She’s not very heavy but she squirms a lot.” Zach said as Sarah re-positioned baby Ellie to pass her off to Nick.
“Oh, God.” Nick took a deep breath when Ellie looked at him. “I can’t.”
“Here.” Zach took Ellie from Sarah and placed her on Nick’s lap. “Put your hands on her sides, like that. If you help her, she can stand.”
“She can stand?” Nick asked, watching Zach grab her chubby fists and pull her up.
“She started yesterday!” Sarah clapped when Ellie was standing up straight—as straight as a baby could while someone was holding their hands above their head at least.
“Oh, wow.” Nick stared, feeling like his stomach was turning itself upside down.
He had missed so much… his baby niece was standing up and he’d never even gotten to hold her before.
Zach let go of her hands and she fell against Nick’s chest, letting out the most precious laugh Nick had ever heard.
“Oh my God.” Tears welled in Nick’s eyes as Ellie sat up without help.
“Ba ba ba ba ba.” Ellie cooed, touching his chin.
“You’re so pretty.” Nick cried as Kurt walked up. “And so big. I-I’m sorry we haven’t met yet.”
Ellie grinned when Kurt tickled her little cheek.
“I have to get better… I c-can’t miss this stuff anymore.” Nick sniffled.
“We brought the papers for you to sign.” Sarah leaned over, resting her head on Nick’s shoulder.
“Papers?” Nick asked.
“For you to be her godfather. Remember?” She patted his leg.
“Still?” Nick echoed. “After…?”
“We wouldn’t want anyone else to take care of her if something happens. We asked you the day we told everyone it was a girl… It was never not going to be you.” Zach said.
“Plus… you’ve got to get healthy. She’s counting on you.” Kurt ruffled Nick’s hair.
“Nobody would be more perfect to raise her than you.” Sarah added. “We want you to see her more. We’ve always talked about you even if she hasn’t met you. We show her pictures of you.”
Nick sniffled again and helped Ellie stand again. “It’s very nice to meet you, Ellie. I’m your uncle Nick.”
Zach grinned. “I knew once he held her, he’d be obsessed.”
“Nobody doubted it.” Blaine laughed, coming into the room.
“What else can she do?” Nick asked Sarah eagerly.
“Join me.” Sarah got on the floor.
“Can she walk?” Nick sat on the floor, sitting Ellie up in the middle of them.
“No. It’ll be a few months. She really can’t stand on her own either. You have to support her weight.” Sarah smiled. She leaned over, laying Ellie down. “But we’ve worked on a few tricks.”
Nick gasped when Ellie sat up on her own without something to hold on to—it took a bit, but she got there.
“She sticks everything in her mouth.” Zach said, sitting next to Nick. “It’s horrible. Lint, pennies…”
“Zach, you can’t leave change lying around!” Kurt gasped.
“We don’t! We don’t even use cash. I don’t know where she gets it!” Zach protested and then turned to Nick again. “She bangs and shakes everything, too. She’s got this little ball at home with a penguin in it. She’ll drop it and pick it up for an hour if you let her.”
“Oh, she can have something in her left hand and take it with her right hand.” Sarah added. “I think she’s left handed like Zach.”
“She could be ambidextrous.” Kurt suggested. “The last time I had her, she was picking up stuff with her right hand.”
“She tries to wave with her right hand too.” Zach told him.
“What’s her full name?” Nick asked. “Does she have three last names?”
“Eleanor Nichole Anderson-Hummel.” Sarah smiled.
“Nichole?”
“It’s with an ‘h’… like Nicholas.” Zach said.
“You brought us together. And you literally saved my life. I… I wanted to, Nick. I love you.” Sarah smiled more.
“I don’t want to cry again. I’ve cried all day.” Nick whimpered.
“Don’t cry… just take care of yourself. You’re very loved, Nick. You’re very needed.” Sarah bit her lip. “I’m sorry for what you’re going through.”
“He’ll get there.” Blaine said confidently.
“Of course he will.” Kurt smiled. “But honey, you look really tired.”
“It’s been a very emotional day.” Nick admitted.
“We’re here until Monday morning.” Zach said. “She’ll be here tomorrow… and Sarah and I too, but it’s the baby everyone really wants to see.”
Nick bent, kissing the top of Ellie’s head.
“Here, honey. I’ll go upstairs with you.” Kurt stepped back, making room for Nick to stand and break away.
“Thank you both… seriously.” Nick looked between Zach and Sarah. “For understanding and not being mad.”
They both nodded.
Kurt put his hand on Nick’s back, walking behind him. Usually Nick was fine but it was a lot of stairs and he’d fallen down half the flight at least twice since coming home from school. His body hadn’t healed as much as David (or any of them, for that matter) would have liked.
“Sophie coming home tonight?” Nick asked, making his way into his bedroom and over to his bed.
“Yeah.” Kurt smiled, sitting on the edge of the bed. “You and Blaine talked?”
“I didn’t know it was so bad for him.” Nick admitted, getting under his covers. He used to hate sleeping with blankets before but now he froze if he didn’t. “It makes sense why he’d never let us go see them…”
“Yeah… It just is what it is, I guess.” Kurt nodded. “We’re all better off.”
Nick nodded, laying his head against his pillow.
“I’m so proud of you for talking about stuff today… I’m proud of you every day, but… today was big.” Kurt brushed his bangs back.
“Thanks.” Nick forced a smile.
“She stays in here every night, doesn’t she?” Kurt asked, seeing Sophie’s pillowcase on the unoccupied side of the bed.
“Yeah. I don’t know why, but it’s nice to have someone here.” Nick nodded and bit his lip.
“Because she loves you and she’s worried.” Kurt bent down, kissing his forehead. “Try to get some sleep, okay? We’ll be quiet. Plus, you’ve got to—.”
“Get up early for group therapy.” Nick finished. “I know.”
Kurt sighed a bit, looking at him.
“What?” Nick asked, looking confused.
“Nothing.” Kurt smiled and stood. “Goodnight, love.”
“Love you, Daddy.” Nick pulled his covers up under his chin and had fallen asleep before Kurt had made it to the door.
“Is he in bed?” Sophie asked as she got upstairs.
“Yeah. Just now.” Kurt nodded, leaving the door open a small crack. “He may be asleep by now.”
“That’s okay. Good night, Daddy. Love you.” Sophie kissed Kurt’s cheek.
“I love you too, sweetie.” Kurt hugged her. “Get me if you or he need anything.”
“I will.” Sophie said, disappearing into Nick’s bedroom and closing the door behind her.

I just couldn’t quit writing on this one… Sorry it’s longish.
I’ve had several requests for more Nick and Cody, so here you are.

“Oh my God, I’m so sorry. I thought I was never going to finish the essay.”
Nick’s ears perked up.
He, both of his fathers, Zach and Sarah were out at a local bar. A band that Sarah liked would be playing a small show and Blaine would take any excuse to eat crappy bar food anyway.
“Cody, don’t bother. You wouldn’t have been on time anyway.” Another guy joked and a few other people laughed loudly.
Nick was right. He had heard Cody.
But that made sense—this was a more artsy bar. And Cody was… well, artsy.
“They always start late anyway… Can I have a drink of that? It doesn’t have Vodka does it, because that stuff hasn’t done anything for me since I was fifteen.”
Another guy walked past their table, two drinks in hand. “Here ya go, Cod.”
Cod? Nick thought to himself. Someone calls him Cod?
“Have I mentioned I love you lately?” Cody asked someone—presumably the guy who had just carried two drinks past them.
“Nick, that’s your friend. That’s Cody!” Kurt leaned over the table. “Turn around.”
“No thanks.” Nick said, suddenly feeling very anxious at the idea of seeing Cody in public with nearly his entire family present.
“You should say hi. You’ve got a huge crush on him anyway. And he’s wearing some pretty tight pants. I figured he was skinny but damn.”
Blaine, who had been looking at his email on his phone, perked up. “Who is skinny and in tight pants?”
“Dad, you’re twice the age of the older person in here.” Zach looked horrified. Not quite as horrified as Nick was.
“I hate being old.” Blaine sulked and returned his attention to his phone.
“Say hi. Come on.” Kurt leaned over again. “Before your father over here beats you to it.”
“I don’t know him well enough.”
“Blaine, it’s the one that came to visit the day after Nick was in the hospital. Remember I told you about him? And his country accent?” Kurt had to speak loud over the music, which conveniently quietened seconds into Kurt’s last sentence.
“Oh my God.” Nick covered his face. “I knew I should have stayed at home with Sophie.”
“The blonde one?” Blaine questioned, not even hiding the fact that he was trying to figure out who Kurt was talking about.
“Yeah. Red shirt. Isn’t he adorable?” Kurt asked.
Sarah, who was sitting next to Nick, patted his leg.
“Please don’t look.” Nick pleaded.
“I won’t.” She promised as Zach craned his neck to look behind them.
“He knows how to down a glass of alcohol.” Zach muttered.
“Well he’s from Georgia. Country boys start drinking when they’re 14.” Kurt said as if he knew all about young country boys in Georgia and their drinking habits.
“Can we please talk about something else?” Nick begged. “Or I’m going to get a taxi home. I’m serious. Please don’t draw attention to me.”
“Usually you want all of the attention.” Zach retorted.
“The whole eating disorder put a stopper in that, alright?” Nick was clearly mad at his point.
“Come on. Let’s just eat and wait for the show, okay?” Blaine looked at everyone at the booth. “Yes?”
“Sorry I brought it up, Nick. But I really think you should say hello to him.” Kurt leaned over again.
“I told him hello this morning at therapy.” Nick frowned. “I’m going to go home.”
“No!” Sarah exclaimed. “I’ve barely seen you at all since Christmas and we wanted you here!”
Nick, who had always had a soft spot for Sarah, sighed and nodded.
“Can you let me out?” Blaine asked Kurt. “I want a drink.”
“Can’t you just wait for someone to come?” Kurt asked as he stood.
“With these kids packing in, I doubt that will be an option. Anyone want anything? Nick, Zach, Sarah?” Blaine asked, pulling his wallet out.
“Nothing we can legally have.” Zach retorted, making Nick crack a smile.
Blaine rolled his eyes and headed towards the bar. He didn’t need to ask what Kurt wanted—he always knew.
Five minutes later, Blaine had barely sat down before someone said his name.
Or, rather, squealed it. It was one of the girls behind them.
Kurt arched his eyebrow as Blaine sat down, looking very confused.
Nick turned his head to look back. A girl was struggling to get out of their booth and his eyes locked with Cody’s.
Fuck.
The girl made it over first, thrusting her hand towards Kurt who had let Blaine in.
“You are a genius. Both of you are. And you have the hottest— oh my God. It’s the twins. Oh my God.”
Cody stumbled down followed by the guy who had brought Cody his drink earlier.
“Becca, come on.” The guy said, attempting to pull her back. “There is a such thing as personal space.”
“I wrote my college entrance essay on you guys and how influential you are in the gay community. You guys are so awesome. You’ve donated so much and you make appearances and you have the perfect family.” The girl, Becca, gushed. “I can’t believe I didn’t believe him when he told me he’d met you in the flesh. Oh my God. Am I drunk and imagining this? You’re so quiet.”
Cody covered his face, shuffling awkward on one foot.
“It’s nice to meet you too.” Kurt said kindly.
“I’m sorry to interrupt your all’s dinner but, seriously, thank you for everything you all have done. You’re the best and if you all had a reality TV show, I’d watch it nightly… okay, bye.” Becca bustled back over to her table, looking embarrassed.
“Er, sorry. She likes you guys a lot.” The other guy said, giving an awkward wave and grabbing Cody’s drink from his hand before heading back to his own booth.
“I am so sorry… Your parents are very, erm, popular at Tisch.” Cody said, eyes not having left Nick since getting to the table. “And I didn’t know you were here or I would have warned you… She’s not crazy, I promise.”
Kurt got up, hugging Cody. “Don’t blush; it’s fine. I tried to talk Nick into going to talk to you but I think he was intimidated.
“Oh my God, Daddy.” Nick groaned.
“Hey, are you hungry? They’ve got awesome grilled cheeses and I can’t eat a whole one. Plus, every time more than 4 of us come here together it gets so loud and I look for excuses to get away from the yelling… Well, their yelling.” Cody returned his attention to Nick, blushing a bit.
Blaine chimed in from the table, “I helped make him. Do I get a grilled cheese too?”
“Hi, I’m Cody.” Cody blushed a bit, holding his hand to shake Blaine’s hand.
“This is Zach and Sarah.” Nick gestured.
Cody waved bashfully.
“I’m part two of the twins.” Zach grinned. “But I think you already knew that.”
“Uhm, yeah… I… yeah, I did.” Cody blushed even more.
“Oh my God, he is adorable.” Blaine said, looking between Nick and Cody with a silly lovesick kind of face. He then hissed, “Go and get a grilled cheese sandwich.”
“Go on.” Sarah elbowed him gently.
Nick stood, taking Kurt’s offered wallet.
Cody absolutely beamed. Nick was pretty sure the alcohol had a part to do in his being relatively calm because he knew Cod to be a very shy person.
“Sorry I didn’t say hi.” Nick said over the loud talking in the club.
Cody stopped and ushered Nick in front of him so he wouldn’t lose him. “I wouldn’t have either. They’re all very loud and intimidating. It took me a long time to go out in public with them myself.”
“I can see that.” Nick grinned a bit. Why had he been afraid to say something to Cody? Talking to him was always easy.
“I hope this isn’t awkward to say but your dads are so adorable together. Blaine’s exactly how I’d imagine him being.” Cody got in line to place their order.
“Yeah. I mean people come up to them a lot in the city but not as… excitedly as Becca.” Nick laughed.
“Becca’s… Becca.” Cody explained, leaning close so Nick could hear him. “She’s excited about everything. She’s so happy it’s kind of alarming. Do people always call you and your brother ‘the twins?’”
“Yeah.” Nick nodded. “Although we don’t look anything alike.”
“I can see it a bit.” Cody gestured with his hands. “The eyes and the, uhm… body. I said that out loud. Oh my God.”
Nick bit back a grin.
“Mainly the eyes, though. They’re very pretty. I said that out loud too. Oh my God.” Cody covered his face. He looked ahead when he lowered his hands. “Hey, what do you want to drink?”
“Sweet tea… but I’m getting it.”
“No, no, no. It’s the least I can do for being a babbling idiot.” Cody got to the counter. “Can I get a large grilled cheese sandwich, a sweet tea, and a Dr. Pepper?”
Nick looked down, biting his lip to keep from smiling. He’d never had another guy buy him dinner before.
“You got it.” The guy put the order in and ran Cody’s card.
“Thanks.” Cody backed up and gestured for Nick to follow him to an area just to the right of the bar. He then sat at a small table that had two chairs. “They’ll bring it to us.”
“Okay.” Nick nodded.
“Why are you here?” Cody asked, leaning closer to him so he could hear him better.
“Sarah likes the band that plays.” Nick responded, scooting closer to him. “Sarah is Zach’s girlfriend. They don’t get out much more. They’ve got a one year old.”
“Aww.” Cody cooed as the guy brought them their sandwich and drinks. “Do you like the band?”
“I haven’t really kept up with music since I went to UCLA.” Nick admitted after thanking the man and taking a sip of his tea.
“Same, but since junior year. It’s hard to keep up with stuff between schooling, interning, working, homework.” Cody took his half of the sandwich—and he was right, it was huge.
Nick took a bite and his eyes widened. “It is good.”
“Told you.” Cody took a huge gulp of his Dr. Pepper. “I’m glad I got to see you tonight.”
“I’m glad I got to see you too.” Nick smiled at him.
Cody smiled back and looked around. “If I wasn’t buzzed I’ve be having an anxiety attack right now.”
“Why?” Nick asked, alarmed.
“It’s so packed. That’s why we always go up with the tables. I hate being in highly populated areas. It’s always scared me.” Cody admitted.
“Let’s go back up.” Nick insisted, standing up immediately. “You’re finished with your part of the sandwich and I’ll eat mine up there.”
“But I want to see you.” Cody didn’t stand up, looking at Nick with bright blue eyes. He tilted his head adorably.
“You’re uncomfortable.” Nick weakly argued. “Can we at least go outside?”
“I’m fine.” Cody promised.
“Please?” Nick asked.
“Okay.” Cody hopped up, again making Nick walk before him so he wouldn’t lose him. The place was getting packed as the show drew nearer. “Oh my God.”
“What?” Nick asked once they were outside.
“Your dads. They’re so adorable.” Cody pointed.
Kurt and Blaine were across the street, sitting on a bench and holding hands while they talked.
“I want to introduce you to my dad so you can actually talk to him.” Nick said. “Is that okay?”
“Yeah.” Cody smiled and crossed the street with Nick.
“Hey, honey.” Kurt stood, ruffling Nick’s hair.
“Dad, this is Cody… he’s my friend that I met in therapy. He’s interning there.”
Blaine grinned and stood, shaking his hand. “I’m Blaine.”
“Cody. Hi.” Cody waved, slightly bashfully. The alcohol seemed to have worn off a bit.
“What kind of art do you do?” Blaine asked.
“Well personally I draw and sometimes paint,” Cody said. “But I’m getting two degrees. I’m studying art and public policy at Tisch. NYU.”
“Oh? What are you going to do with those? I assume you’ll use them together.” Blaine asked interestedly.
“I’d like to do art therapy with kids. That’s how I ended up with the internship at the office Nick goes to. They let me help with the little kids. It’s great because of the experience and being in the atmosphere in general.” Cody explained. “The rest is pretty boring but it’s always better when I get to see Nick.”
Nick blushed a bit, refusing to make eye contact with Kurt who was beaming.
“Do you like this band?” Blaine asked.
“No. Well, I guess I don’t really no.” Cody admitted. “But sometimes it’s nice to go out with people that I know from school. All of them are pretty much doing what I’m doing at Tisch now… and the tall one I went to high school with at Riverdale.”
“Riverdale?” Blaine coughed. “They went there. The boys, I mean.”
“It’s a small school. You two probably had classes together and didn’t even know it!” Kurt exclaimed.
Blaine smiled at Kurt’s excitement, leaning over to kiss his cheek.
“Are you okay?” Kurt asked Nick suddenly.
“Yeah,” Nick, who had been staring ahead and wishing he wouldn’t have to go back into the crowded bar, looked at his father. “I think I’m just ready to be home.” Nick admitted, taking a sip of his iced tea.
“Honey, we can take you home and pick Sarah and Zach over later.” Kurt put his hand on Nick’s arm. “It’s okay.”
“Ooh, me. I can take him home.” Cody said. “I already know the way.”
Blaine snorted loudly.
“I promise I’m not even tipsy. It takes a lot more than that to do anything.” Cody reassured them. “If that’s okay with you? I need an excuse to leave anyway. It’s a win for everyone.”
“Okay.” Nick nodded and bit his lip. “Yeah, okay. Is that okay?”
“Just be safe.” Kurt hugged Nick. “Thanks for coming out at all. I know Sarah really wanted you here with us. I’ll tell her you weren’t feeling up to it anymore. She’ll understand.”
“C’mere.” Blaine hugged him and kissed the top of his head. “Love you.”
“Love you guys too. Thanks.” Nick looked to Cody. “You ready?”
“Texting Josh… and… yep, let’s go. I’m parked a few blocks down but I know a shortcut.”
“Be careful!” Kurt called after them.
“Would you rather go home or go see a movie that will be way better than the concert?” Cody asked as they made it to his car.
“What movie?”
“The first Thor movie. I have a huge crush on Chris Hemsworth.” Cody opened the passenger door for Nick.
“I’ve never seen a Thor movie.” Nick admitted.
“That’s changing tonight.” Cody got into the driver’s seat. “Your life changes tonight, actually. You won’t be able to turn back. I hope this is a commitment you’re willing to make.”
“To Thor?” Nick laughed as he buckled his seatbelt.
“To Thor and all of the beautiful heroes in the Marvel universe.” Cody pulled out of the parking lot. “The very, very beautiful heroes.”
Nick smiled, relaxing against the passenger seat. The night had turned out much better than he thought it would.
Twintuition
“I can’t take it. Talk to your sons.” Kurt blurted the second Blaine walked through the door.
“Hello to you too, my love.” Blaine grinned. “They’re only my sons when they’ve annoyed you. Sophie is always our daughter.”
“Yeah well they’ve been particularly annoying since you left on Wednesday.” Kurt sighed.
“Annoying? When isn’t Nick annoying?”
“Blaine, that’s mean.” Kurt gave him a look.
“You’re the one saying he’s been annoying. I just walked in the door.” Blaine pointed out. “What are they doing?”
“They’re being weird.” Kurt sighed. “I don’t know.”
“…Weird? Are you feeling okay?” Blaine tilted his head.
“Listen to this. Nick fell down three stairs last night—he’s okay! But Zach and I were in the attic looking for something or other and suddenly Zach cringes and grabs his elbow like he hurt it. He even cried out.” Kurt explained.
“That is so cool!” Blaine gasped.
“No, it’s really not. Because yesterday morning they both made themselves bowls of cereal and it was freaky. Zach’s using his left hand to pour, Nick’s using his right. They reached for the bowls at the same time, got their spoons at the same time, sat down at the table at the same time across from each other, and it was like a mirror image but opposite except for the fact that they look nothing alike. And I brought it up because it’s like some creepy twin horror moving scene or something and they act like I’m the crazy one.”
“They’re pulling one over you.” Blaine laughed.
“No, Blaine, they aren’t. Because Sophie’s noticed it too.” Kurt shook his head. “They’re being fucking weird. I thought they were messing with me at first too but even a teacher called because Zach was doing a problem on the board and Nick finished the problem out loud at his desk!”
“They are obviously trying to freak out you and the teacher.”
“They’re not. I swear to you, Blaine, they’re not!”
“Kurt, my love, they are. Have you met your sons?”
“Alright, yeah, Nick likes to mess with me sometimes but Zach? They don’t exactly have the same sense of humor.” Kurt groaned. “Do you think they’re really just messing with me?”
“Wouldn’t surprise me one bit Soph was in on it too.” Blaine smiled brightly as Nick entered the rom.
“In on what?” Nick looked confused. “Why are you so happy after a work trip?”
“Well played. You and Zachy have driven Kurt crazy since I left.”
“What did I do? I’m not the one hatching a snake in there.” Nick looked genuinely confused.
“It’s not a snake!” Zach called from upstairs.
“HOW DID YOU EVEN HEAR THAT?!” Kurt yelled. “HOW DO YOU TWO KNOW THE CONVERSATIONS THE OTHER IS HAVING WITHOUT EVEN BEING IN THE SAME FLOOR OF THE HOUSE?!”
Nick, who was already at least three inches taller than Kurt, went to hug his dad. “Are you working through the night again, Pops?”
“Do not call me Pops!” Kurt exclaimed as Zach came in.
“What is going on? I have done nothing, I promise.” Zach held up his hands, looking straight at Blaine.
“You two doing the twin thing!” Kurt said, looking pretty worked up. “It’s driving me crazy and it’s not even real! It can’t be real! Good lord I know you two had that language made up when you were babies but this is out of hand and I’m under a lot of pressure here so I need you guys to quit messing with me!”
Zach tilted his head, looking concerned. “You okay, Dad?”
“Blaine, make them stop!” Kurt threw his hands in the air. “I need it to stop.”
“Kurt, they’ll quit.” Blaine promised.
“Quit what?” Zach asked. “I’m not doing anything, Daddy. I promise.”
“I always thought you were going to be the one to go crazy, Dad.” Nick said happily. “This is wonderful. You let us stay out later.”
Kurt covered his face, groaning into his hands. “Twins. Twins. Seriously, twins.”
Zach walked over slowly, arm going around his father’s shoulders. “I know. I find it very stressful too, Daddy. I don’t even look anything like him and sometimes people will come up to finish conversations they had with him.”
Kurt lowered his hands.
“No, that is my bad.” Nick grinned. “Sorry, I thought it’d be funny… and it is. It still is after ten years.”
“Quit mouthing the word ‘dick’, Zach.” Kurt snapped, not even looking at his son.
“So… you two have not concocted a plan to finish each other’s sentences, to feel each other’s pain, and to synchronize eating cereal this week?” Blaine asked very calmly, beginning to wonder himself if Kurt had lost his mind.
“No.” Zach bent down, scratching his left leg.
“Freaking mosquito!” Nick slapped at his own leg.
“SEE!?” Kurt exclaimed. “Nick just got bit and Zach felt it! This isn’t normal!”
“Your leg itches?” Nick asked Zach eagerly.
“Oh, like that’s a good thing.” Zach looked confused.
“We do have the twin thing!” The both said together about fifteen seconds later.
“No, it’s totally a myth.” Zach shook his head. “Totally a myth.”
“But I’ve always wanted the cool twin thing!” Nick protested.
“We’re fraternal not identical.”
“So? I totally did an essay on this in seventh grade debunking it because I’m a twin and it’s not true but what if I was wrong? Oh man, I have to go and tell Mr. Smith that I should have gotten an F on that paper because I was wrong.”
“You have all three lost your minds. I go away for three days and come back to a house full of psych ward patients.” Blaine shook his head.
“Swear to God, Dad, I have not made any of this up. The cereal thing is obvious, though. I’m left handed and Nick’s right handed. Obviously, we’d be doing opposite.” Zach tried to reason.
“He’s got a point there, Kurt.” Blaine looked at Kurt.
“I’m going crazy. I need a vacation. I need to get away from all of you people because you’re driving me crazy.” Kurt shrugged. “I just need to admit myself to a psych ward.”
“Explain the mosquito bite and you itching at the same time.” Nick urged. “How’s that a coincidence?”
“Twintuition?” Zach suggested.
“Yes, that’s the twin thing we’re talking about.” Nick scoffed.
“Okay well that’s just not possible. All of you are thinking into this way too much and making yourselves see stuff that isn’t there.” Zach shook his head.
“I think you guys have gone nutters.” Blaine shrugged, walking out of the room.
“Blaine, come back in here! This isn’t funny! They’re acting freaky!” Kurt exclaimed, following him.
“You are going to come into the kitchen, you are going to have some wine, and you are going to go take a nap.” Blaine put his hands on Kurt’s shoulder. “You need sleep.”
“I don’t need sleep. I need my children to stop messing with me. I’m having nightmares of them mutating and just… Twins. I knew this wasn’t going to end well.”
“I find that very offensive!” Zach called as he walked up the stairs.
“What he said!” Nick chimed in.
“I just live here.” Sophie, who was sitting at the counter and eating an orange, shrugged.
“Me too, Soph.” Kurt sighed, taking a glass of wine from Blaine. “Me too.”
Double Date
“Look at the couple back together for two official months and looking so very in looove.” Alec cooed when Kurt and Blaine walked up to he and Eric.
They both grinned.
“Hike, hike, hike.” Eric hopped up. “Come on. It’s getting late.”
“It’s ten in the morning.” Kurt snorted.
“Have you decided which one we’re going to do yet?” Blaine asked.
“He wants to do a nine-mile hike but I put a stopper in that one really quickly.” Alec sighed and Eric pulled him up off the ground where they had both been sitting. “You’re both welcome by the way.”
Kurt’s eyes widened in horror. “How many miles is the… shortest one?”
“The shortest one he’s willing to ‘settle for’ if he ‘has to’ is four miles.” Alec sighed. “I did warn you, Kurt.”
“It’ll be between 3.5 and 4.5 hours.” Eric chirped. “Let’s head out because we don’t want the whole thing to be in full sun. We usually leave at 7 in the morning and finish around 2.”
“It’s the only thing that lasts close enough to a half day at the hospital.” Alec whispered, walking up between Kurt and Blaine.
“Wes, David, and I have done 10 miles so I’m good.” Blaine shrugged.
“Since when?” Kurt questioned, looking at Blaine like he’d grown a second head.
“Ever since we first because friends when I was fourteen. We used to a lot more when we were in Ohio but we still do when we’re all together and have nothing to do… What, do you think we just sit around and stare at each other when we hang out?”
“Well yeah. That’s what you do when you hang out any time I’m around.”
“Kurt… have you ever hiked?” Eric asked, looking slightly amused.
“Well, not exactly… I take long walks, though.”
Alec glanced down. “Okay, those shoes are not going to work. I mean you can wear them but you’ll probably be crying in pain within an hour.”
“And once you’re a bit into the trails, you can’t really turn around.” Eric added. “Alec found that out the hard way.”
“It was a very hard way.” Alec sighed.
“We wear the same size and I drove. I’ve got an extra pair in my trunk.” Blaine nudged Kurt. “Come on, we’re taking my car anyway, right?”
“I call shotgun because if I don’t, I’ll be carsick the whole way.” Alec said. “If that’s okay?”
“The less vomit in my car, the better.” Blaine began leading them all to his car.
“Ramapo is probably going to be the easiest option for Kurt.” Alec said.
“For Kurt or for you?” Eric joked as Alec climbed into Blaine’s front seat. “Alec isn’t the biggest fan of outdoorsy stuff. I have a feeling it’s because his family spent 2 years in the boonies when he was little. Wasn’t your dad based at Fort Knox?”
“You’re thinking of Georgia and please don’t tell the story.”
“I have to tell the story.” Eric said from the back seat. “This is before his dad was higher up in the ranks, right?”
“Ranks of what?” Blaine asked.
Eric looked at Kurt. “You don’t know?”
“Nope.” Kurt looked confused.
“His dad is a Lieutenant General in the marines. He meets with the president all the time.”
“It’s not all the time. Generally, every 3 months.” Alec argued, turning to look at Eric. “He makes it sound cooler than it is.”
“Alec, most people don’t even meet the president once.” Eric said. “Anyway, so they were in Georgia for that.”
“He wasn’t in that high of a rank then.” Alec cut in.
“Tell the story yourself if I’m not doing a decent job.” Eric raised his hands in defense.
“Long story short it was in the country and I ran down a hill, which I thought was a mount, sobbing because a bear was behind me.”
Kurt’s eyes doubled in size.
“It was a pregnant twenty-pound dog.” Eric cut in before bursting into laughter.
“Har har har. It’s so funny.” Alec threw a Kleenex at him.
“Isn’t that the second highest ranking though?” Blaine asked. “That’s kind of awesome.”
“I guess.” Alec shrugged. “Let’s tell them about your father’s career.”
“My dad is a highly renowned brain surgeon.” Eric waved his hand.
“His dad invented a thing that has changed brain surgery and the lives saved by thousands.” Alec corrected. “And he’s dirt rich.”
“Your dad makes close to $17,000 a month, Alec. Let’s not bring up dirt rich.” Eric scoffed.
Blaine glanced in the rearview mirror, meeting Kurt’s eyes. Kurt gave him a small smile.
“Point of the story is I’m not fond of nature.” Alec said. “And the reason Eric got on a job in New York so fast is his last name.”
“Hey, I am very good at what I do.” Eric scoffed. “What do your parents do?”
“My dad is a pediatrician.” Blaine said in an apathetic tone.
“My dad is a mechanic.” Kurt responded. “He’s got his own shop.”
“That’s a good skill to have, though. I wish when my car acted up, I could just call my dad.” Alec said. “The only reason my dad’s job will help me is if there’s a zombie apocalypse.”
“Or war on our soil. No big deal there.” Blaine laughed.
“Okay, Kurt. Let’s listen to this. Eric’s mother—.”
“Please, for the love of God, don’t bring this up again. One of these days I’m going to take the ring back.” Eric groaned, covering his face.
“Wants to have a wedding with 5,000 guests.” Alec said. “I have, like, two close friends. One of them is you.”
“Woah.” Kurt’s eyes widened and he looked at Eric. “Is your mom insane?”
“My mother has been… very well taken care of—”
“Cough spoiled cough.” Alec interrupted.
“Okay, spoiled. She’s been spoiled her whole life.” Eric agreed. “And she likes people to know it… plus, my family is Greek so… everyone’s heard of My Big Fat Greek Wedding.”
“And Alec has two close friends. No cousins, no aunts and uncles. Grandparents on both sides and parents.” Alec said. “Kurt and Blaine, would you two have a wedding that huge?”
Blaine began coughing in shock.
“They’ve been back together a little over a month. Don’t kill him.” Eric said.
Kurt reached up, patting Blaine’s shoulder. “I can safely say we will not have a wedding that big. We’ve got small, tight knit families.”
“Yeah, that.” Blaine nodded.
“I want to elope. Literally just go to Hawaii or something, get married, come back, and tell everyone it’s handled and done.” Alec continued. “Or just close family and friends with us.”
“I think that you two should do what you want to do. It’s your day.” Blaine said.
“Thank you so much for agreeing with the normal people in the world.” Alec said.
“I think Alec should just let me handle my own mother.” Eric sighed.
“I had to run her off when you were throwing up and having seizures because she was too busy shopping to take care of you!” Alec exclaimed. “This wasn’t that long ago.”
“I remember hearing all about that.” Kurt chirped.
“Do you guys have this issue?” Alec asked.
“My parents are really… accepting of us. Or me in general.” Blaine admitted.
“My dad butts into everything… but it’s not as bad as what you two go through.” Kurt added. “He pretty much considers Blaine his own son. I think he likes Blaine more than me half of the time.”
“I think we have more in common.” Blaine argued. “That being sports, food, and Kurt.”
“So how long have you guys been dating?”
“My senior year of high school and his junior year. I moved in with Kurt in my senior year.”
“But didn’t you go to UK?”
“The attack.” Kurt, who had already told Alec about it some months ago, cut in. “He took care of me.”
Eric looked at him, curious, but didn’t ask for elaboration.
“But I went back to UK the next year, got caught up, and still graduated on time. Ant then… Harvard.”
“You’ve got to meet up with my best friend that went to Yale. I’m sure he could give you tips on anything you’d need. He’s super friendly, too. I can start a group chat on Facebook and then you can add him and you guys talk.”
“Really?” Blaine asked. Seeking help on his own had only led to a sexual assault attempt. He was sure Eric wouldn’t be best friends with anyone like that.
“Totally. He’ll call or video chat or whatever. He just passed his Bar exam in February so he knows exactly what you’re going through.”
“That’s great but… I’m pretty sure we’re lost.” Blaine looked at his phone that was trying to reroute them through a river without a bridge.
Alec turned around and mouthed ‘thank God’ to Kurt.
“I saw that!” Eric groaned. “Why do you hate me?”
“I don’t hate you. I hate nature.” Alec shrugged. “What do you say we just find an ice cream shop? Or, better yet, a bar.”
“I could go for that.” Blaine said eagerly. “I haven’t drunk in so long.”
“I can’t with the medicine I’m on so I guess I’ll be the DD.” Eric groaned.
“Yes, but you’ll get to see Kurt drunk and it’s the best.” Alec clapped his hands.
“Why has everyone but me seen you drunk?” Blaine pouted as he turned the car around.
“Obviously he has to wait until you’re married to show your true colors.” Alec, who was looking back at them again, nodded solemnly.
“For someone who gets carsick so much, you sure do look back here a lot.” Eric pointed out. “Kurt, he doesn’t trust us alone.”
“No worries there. He’s very into me.” Blaine grinned.
Kurt rolled his eyes. “You’re exhausting sometimes, babe.”
“But you wouldn’t have me any other way, right?”
“Something like that.” Kurt smiled and leaned up patting his shoulder.
“They’re so much cuter than us. You’re right.” Eric sighed sadly. “We’re so cute, though. How do you compete with them?”
“You don’t.” Blaine grinned again.
“What he said.” Kurt gave an impish smile as well.
Moving Out
Blaine looked up from his computer, seeing Nick standing just outside of his ‘home office’ and shuffling his feet anxiously.
“Nicky? You okay?”
“Uh, yeah.” Nick walked in. “Hey, Dad.”
“Hey. I didn’t know you made it home. Did you have fun at Cody’s senior show tonight?” Blaine smiled.
“Yeah, it was awesome. He had a lot of great stuff… everyone did. But people really liked his stuff.” Nick nodded, plopping down in one of the extra chairs in front of Blaine’s desk.
“Everything okay?” Blaine tilted his head a bit.
“It… It is, I just…” Nick sighed a bit, looking like he was trying to talk himself into or out of something. “Dad, when can I end the guardianship? I mean not for now, but uhm…”
“Nick, we can give your rights back whenever you think you’re ready but I’m not convinced you are.” Blaine watched Nick’s reaction carefully. “What’s really going on?”
“I know it’s only the end of April but… in August Cody’s lease on his apartment is up. You guys saw the building last winter when we had the bad storm and we brought him to our place for Christmas since the power was out. It’s a shit hole. They don’t take care of it, stuff is always going on with the place and it takes days for them to even answer emergency calls.” Nick babbled. “I haven’t talked to Cody or anything because this seems like it’s coming out of nowhere—I know it does; you don’t need to tell me— but I want to get a place with him. We’ve known each other less than a year and I know it sounds crazy but I just, I don’t know, know, you know?”
“Despite how much my English degree is crying, I do know what you mean.” Blaine smiled a bit. He remembered the first time realizing one day he wanted to live with Kurt. How the idea had sounded so strange at first but how the more he thought about it, the more he realized that nothing had ever made more sense.
“When I stay the night, I don’t want to leave.” Nick sighed a bit. “This last year so much has changed but ever since I met him… I never want to be away from him. It’s like I’ve been looking for him all along. It’s like moments without him…”
“Are meaningless?” Blaine questioned.
“Yeah.” Nick’s voice was softer than it usually was. He swallowed.
“Nicky… I know how you’re feeling. I’m not telling you not to do it… I’m just telling you there is a substantial difference than living in a dorm room and in your own place with your partner. There’s more pressure, there’s not really any moment to yourself unless you’re using the bathroom. Everything’s out there, everyone’s flaws come out, you’ll argue over cleaning out the fridge and letting out the dog in the rain. Stuff breaks, you spend so much more money on things…”Blaine trailed off.
“Are you trying to tell me I shouldn’t move out with Cody?” Nick asked, looking sad.
“I’m not saying that. What I’m saying is that since UCLA… your whole life has been planned to the t. Therapy for your feelings, nutritionist for your evolving diet, visits with David to make sure your body is adjusting okay, going to the gym and trying to stay healthy, lists you have to stick to, responsibilities that all together are making you how you are now. As stress free as Kurt and I can make your life until… until we know that you’re not going to relapse. Moving on your own is stress. Moving out with someone else… that’s a whole different ballpark. Sleepovers with Cody and living with Cody would be two completely different things. And you’ll have to come up with a whole new routine… not to mention you’re wanting to go back to school part time this fall which is going to be even more stressful.” Blaine took a deep breath.
“I haven’t talked to him about it yet. I don’t want to do something that’s going to cause me to relapse… I don’t want to put that stress on anyone else again because it turned everything upside down.” Nick chewed on his lip. “Everything is still upside down actually…”
“You’ve worked so hard to get where you are today. I couldn’t be prouder.” Blaine smiled.
“I think we’re meant to be. I can’t imagine life without him. He’s going to school for a graduate program too and I’m afraid we’ll fall apart…”
“He looks at you like you hung the moon. You two won’t fall apart.”
Nick blushed a bit.
“You know what the right decision is in your heart… and if you don’t know yet, you will. If you decide to move out with him we can cancel the guardianship or we can keep it and you can still move out. Kurt and I don’t want you to feel like you’re in a prison. We just want to make sure you take care of yourself physically and emotionally… It can take up to a month to cancel it… but we might be able to speed that process up, too.”
“Am I insane?”
“I moved in with your father and now I’ve got four kids between the ages of seven and twenty. You tell me who is crazy in this room.” Blaine gave Nick a big smile.
“I think I want to talk about it all with Cody and see what he thinks.” Nick stood.
“That would be a good idea… and don’t forget that Cody does camp and that he goes to Georgia for the summer… I mean, if you guys did move in do you feel comfortable enough where you are to stick to your routine? To eat three meals, four snacks, not portion stuff out, not overwork at the gym? I know you don’t want to think about still struggling in a year but… but it’s possible that you could be. It takes a long time to recover from an eating disorder. And the depression and anxiety… I don’t mean to bring up this stuff and make you doubt your capabilities. I just think you need to think of how it will affect recovery. I will feel comfortable with you moving out if you have gone over every possibility in your head.”
Nick chewed on his lip.
“But understand that I said I would feel comfortable with you moving out… because it’s your decision. Kurt and I won’t keep you from doing it and, like I said… we’ll get the guardianship cancelled as soon as you want it cancelled. You’re an adult and we both trust you to make the best decision for you… We also trust Cody to take care of you.”
“He takes care of me now. When I’m with him he makes sure I have all my meals and all of my snacks, he doesn’t let me overexert myself or anything like that.”
“I know.” Blaine smiled and went to hug him. “Cody’s your person.”
Nick hugged Blaine back tightly, smiling when Blaine kissed the top of his head.
“We love you so much and we’re so happy you found someone that treats you right, takes care of you, and loves you the way you’ve always deserved to be loved. Because you’re an amazing person, Nick, and you only deserve the best. You’re so very special.”
Nick tightened his hug. “Thank you for always being supportive no matter what I want… and thank you for trying to help me at home before sending me away to the anorexia center… I know I was so mad and I said some horrible things but… I know it was a last resort and you tried so hard to keep from doing it. And I know Daddy threatened to divorce you if you wouldn’t let him take me and… and I’m sorry to have put you in that position. But it meant so much when you tried to do what I wanted instead of just shipping me off.”
“I’ll always do everything in my power to make you feel safe, comfortable, and happy.” Blaine pulled back. “And Kurt was never really going to divorce me. Sometimes when I’m worked up he has to get my attention.”
Nick rolled his eyes. “You do have a temper sometimes.”
“I’ve heard.” Blaine hugged him again when Cody walked up hesitantly. “Hey, Cody. Feeling better? I heard you had a sinus infection the last few days.”
“Yes, sir.” Cody smiled, stepping in. “Hey, Nicky.”
Nick smiled. “I’ll see you later, Dad.”
“Yep. Text if you’re going to stay over, alright?” Blaine smiled.
“I’ll make sure he does.” Cody promised.
“I’ve got something possibly exciting to talk about tonight.” Nick said as he led Cody’s out of his office. “You might think it’s crazy but I want you to promise you’ll listen to the whole thing before you form an opinion.”
“Every third thing out of your mouth in crazy, Nick.” Blaine heard Cody say before the front door opened and closed.
You’re going to cry when I tell you about the conversation I just had with our son, Blaine texted Kurt who was still at work.
Did he propose?
Other son, Blaine typed back.
Did he bite that bratty girl again?
Other other son.
Yeah, I know he wants to move in with Cody. I heard him talking about it with Zach last week.
You never tell me anything anymore.
