Clantember Day 5: Special Ranks
The Clans did have some specialized ranks in the early days! Eventually they all got folded into the “Warrior” rank, but there is still a sense that a warrior may have any combination of several roles, and no warrior is required to fill all of them. In that sense, while it is not very common, it is perfectly fine and allowed for a cat to choose to specialize, becoming a full-time caretaker or a patroller but not a hunter, as long as the clan’s needs are met.
Lorekeeper
The lorekeeper is a role that’s existed at times both officially and unofficially, but is always present among the Clans. The Clans take their oral history quite seriously, and so although every cat will partake in storytelling at one time or another, a few cats will tend to take particular interest in telling the Clan’s stories engagingly and accurately. These cats are instructed on how to do this well, and may devote large amounts of time to memorizing and reciting the tales. Often, secrets not known to any other Clan cats live on with the lorekeepers, should that knowledge ever be needed again.
Senior Caretaker
The senior caretaker, also called the matriarch when that language applies, is a role present in almost every group of cats, not just the Clans. Usually, this cat is the most experienced caretaker, having had multiple litters of their own, but occasionally they are a cat who has gained experience through helping others with their kittens. They may be an older warrior or even an elder. The senior caretaker often aids in births and keeps an eye on the nursery, acting in concert with the healers.
Healer Archetypes
Healers come in all sorts, but there are two particular types that pop up again and again, after which the two medicine cat suffixes are made. Herbalist type healers (-leaf), are very clever healers. Their encyclopedic knowledge of herbs allows them to work seamlessly and intuitively, and they are even prone to experimentation when they feel it is safe. Oracle type healers (-berry) are faithful and highly empathetic. They tend to be more focused on the spiritual aspects, but their deep empathy for their clanmates grants them their own skill at caring for their patients.
Tunnelers and Moor Runners
Though there isn’t a rank distinction between these in modern WindClan, there is a sense that a warrior will tend to be best either at running down prey on the moors, or following it down the tunnels. These of course correlate with the “deer” and “rabbit” body types. There was some minor work on the tunnels a long time ago to expand them a bit, but in modern times they are left quite well alone except for clearing out debris at the entrances.
Clantember Day 4: Unusual Traits
Curly Fur: The Selkirk Rex allele can be found occasionally in the Clans, having been introduced from a lineage of barn cats. At the start of our story, it is most common in WindClan, as the elder Flyfoot passed it down to his offspring.
Polydactyly: Polydactyly happens sporadically in all clans. ShadowClan seems to more commonly get the “paddy-foot” variety, while ThunderClan mostly gets mitten-paws.
Bengal Patterns: As of the start of Four Fates, Bengal patterns are found among a certain lineage of RiverClan cats, brought in by Troutclaw, a snow Bengal who was sold off as a pet due to poor typing and who subsequently escaped from his owner.
Colorpoint: In the Clans, point is associated with kittypet ancestry. However, as the former signature pattern of SkyClan, it also may indicate a cat has SkyClan lineage - though not many living cats recall that. Mink and sepia are much rarer.
Clantember Day 3: Clan Looks
ThunderClan
ThunderClan cats are the largest out of all the groups, and cobby in type. Overall, they are very similar to British Shorthairs, with similar broad muzzles and general chonk. Short fur is more common, as it’s less liable to catching on the undergrowth. The bigger and buffer a cat is, the better, and putting on extra weight easily doesn’t hurt either.
Color wise, dark tabbies are the most common, and most frequently are mackerel or broken mackerel. Low amounts of white spotting are reasonably common, with higher amounts being less so. Eyes are typically in the amber to light hazel range.
RiverClan
RiverClan cats are medium-sized and sleek. Though shorthairs are more common, there are also some longhairs, with both types having very smooth pelts due to having very little undercoat. Though well-muscled, they are usually medium-typed to more delicate in build.
Dilutes and silvers are common, and come in all sort of patterns, though classic and spotted tabbies are particularly favored. White spotting is the most common here, and tends to skew toward higher amounts. Red is particularly uncommon. Eyes tend toward lower pigmentation and higher refraction, so a lot of cats have “blue” eyes even without white spotting.
WindClan
WindClan cats tend to come in two distinct types, the “deer” and the “rabbit” type. Deers are very long-limbed and suited for running along the moor. Rabbits, though still on the thinner side, are much smaller, able to chase actual rabbits right down their burrows. Face-wise, they aren’t quite as exaggerated as purebred cats of their type, but they do tend to have lengthened muzzles and larger than average ears. Though they have a mix of longhairs and shorthairs, the longhairs are not very fluffy.
They tend toward pale colors, with lots of chocolates and lilacs, in either solid or ticked tabby. White spotting around the bicolor level is most common.
ShadowClan
ShadowClan cats are average in size. They are compact and agile, muscular but in a wiry sort of way. They have larger than average paws, which helps them not sink into the mud of the marsh, and large eyes as they are the only fully nocturnal clan. Their faces tend to be distinctly square,
Their pelts are dark, though tabbies are slightly less favored than in ThunderClan. Tabbies come in all sorts, but most common is classic. Eye colors are generally also dark, ranging from orange to moss-green.
SkyClan
A bonus! SkyClan, when they are present in this timeline, are nearly as large as ThunderClan, muscular and extremely fluffy. Their signature pattern is colorpoint, so a point cat in the Clans is almost certain to have some SkyClan heritage. They favor lighter colors with white spotting, and when the eyes aren’t blue they tend to be in the high refraction aqua/green range.
Clantember Day 2: Distinctive Philosophies
ThunderClan
ThunderClan is probably the Clan that takes being “warriors” the most to heart. They are both very good at battling, and have very particular ideas about what constitutes a good and honorable battle. They are more likely to resort to battle than most other Clans not just because they’re good at it, but because they are very stubborn. The suffix in honor of them, -storm, is all about standing firm on your beliefs, after all!
RiverClan
RiverClan cares the most about grace, beauty, and artistry. While other Clans may find beauty in their environment, RiverClan will be the ones to wax lyrical about it, and to collect items that they find interesting or beautiful. This is both because the River provides a relatively stable food source, and because they have to worry very little about attacks from the bordering Clans unless they choose to get themselves into trouble.
WindClan
WindClan cares a lot about tradition and history. Though all Clans have strong oral traditions that mean they have a decent general account of history (if somewhat biased), WindClan is the most particular with the accuracy of these stories. While in other Clans it’s expected that there may be some embellishments for entertainment value, especially if you’re talking to kittens, WindClan considers embellishments of this sort as tantamount to lying. Because of this, WindClan has developed a style of storytelling similar to epic poetry, where certain important stories are memorized and recited with little variation.
ShadowClan
ShadowClan, cloistered in their square of Thunderpaths, is a very interesting bunch. They are very traditional and pious, but they also tend to come off as very rude to other Clans, as they have a strong culture of “respectful disrespect”. Teasing and namecalling is normal and expected in ShadowClan, and is put away at only the most sacred moments. As you may imagine, this clashes pretty terribly with the more formal cultures of WindClan and ThunderClan.
Clantember Day 1: Territories
ThunderClan
ThunderClan’s territory is ancient woodland comprised largely of oaks, but also with ash, beech, and elm mixed in. There’s a good mix of clearings and areas with denser underbrush, suited to a variety of hunting styles. There aren’t any human walking paths, but there are a variety of deer paths.
To the North is the Thunderpath, their border with ShadowClan. Because of the inconvenience of crossing, ThunderClan has little contact with ShadowClan except at Gatherings. Technically ShadowClan also owns a small strip of forest between the Thunderpath and Fourtrees, but it is not commonly used unless the extra hunting grounds are sorely needed. The Snakerocks are found along this border, and the Sandy Hollow is due North from camp.
To the East is the edge of the Twolegplace. It is a large town/small city, the portion that borders ThunderClan territory being a peaceful residential area. Most kittypets in the area are indoor-outdoor cats that go in for the night, and most are smart enough not to venture into the woods but instead hang around the yards or in Treecutplace.
To the South is Treecutplace. In this area of England, junipers are the only native conifers, and the rest are only found where cultivated. Here, lodgepole pines are planted for timber, and there is little undergrowth as they are regularly harvested. ThunderClan’s border markers end at the edge of Treecutplace, but they sometimes hunt here when the humans aren’t too active.
To the West is the River, which marks their border with RiverClan, and Fourtrees more to the Northwest. The Owl-tree is not far from Fourtrees, marking the end of ThunderClan’s territory in that direction.
RiverClan
RiverClan is mostly dry heath, with lots of alder and silver birch along the river. The river itself is relatively slow-moving along much of the territory, and therefore safe to swim in so long as one is careful to stick to those parts. There is also a large stream running through the territory, around which the camp is built.
To the North, the River cascades down forming the Falls, into the Gorge that divides their territory from WindClan. The steep, sandy slopes are navigable provided one is careful, but falling over the edge unprepared spells almost certain death.
The river curves around, flowing from the North down to the East border of the territory. The river is the calmest here, safest for swimming and fishing. When Sunningrocks was an island, it was a favored spot for swimming, fishing, and relaxing, and it still is, provided RiverClan can keep a claim over it for any length of time.
To the South, the territory is cut off by a small Thunderpath leading to the Farmhouse. It’s a small family farm of several acres, containing a Twoleg den, a handful of assorted livestock, pastureland, and some actively planted fields. RiverClan keeps a friendly relationship with the few barn cats.
To the East, there is more free heathland. RiverClan doesn’t always bother to mark this border, so there is no hard line on where it ends. Though they could claim more of this territory, it is not especially fruitful for hunting and so they usually consider it more trouble than it’s worth to head all the way out to hunt and patrol. The Flood-camp, the backup area RiverClan evacuates to in case of heavy rain or meltwater, is located East of the main camp.
WindClan
WindClan is comprised of lovely heath and moors with very few trees and shrubs. The elevation increases steadily from Fourtrees, transitioning smoothly into the mountains north of the territories.
To the North, WindClan borders on the Thunderpath. Past the Thunderpath is the mountains, which are definitely on the smaller end for mountains, with fairly smooth slopes. The mountain closest to the territories is often referred to as “the Mother”, supposedly because the top resembles a mother cat and her kittens when viewed from the right angle. “Mothermouth” is the entrance to an aborted attempt at a mine, within which lies the Moonstone. Cross-the-Way Barn is a bit south of Mothermouth, and it’s where Barley lives.
To the East, WindClan borders on Fourtrees and on the edge of ThunderClan’s forest territory. The first large slope past Fourtrees is named Runner’s Hill, after Windstar herself. The Outlook Rock lies just East of camp, allowing a cat to survey a large portion of the territory at once.
To the South is the Gorge that borders RiverClan. WindClan cats, having little reason to go down to the water, tend to mark their border well away from this so no cat accidentally runs too near the edge.
To the West is largely farmland, though the area immediately around the River continues uninterrupted for some way. Though WindClan will hunt upriver in times of need, they don’t claim this territory for the same reason RiverClan doesn’t - it simply isn’t worth is most of the time to stray so far from camp.
ShadowClan
ShadowClan is largely valley bog and alder carrs, though the elevation varies enough therein that it can usually be traversed without getting muddy. The bog supports a variety of birds, reptiles and amphibians for the cats to prey on.
The North, South, and West borders are all demarcated by the Thunderpath, and to the East is the Twolegplace. Though they’re bordered on all sides by Twoleg activity, ShadowClan’s territory is usually left quite well alone because of how difficult it is for humans to traverse and build on. However, this also means that in times of scarcity they do not have any additional areas to expand to.
To the South is the border with ThunderClan, and also where they have the driest and most densely forested area. The Burnt Sycamore resides in a clearing near this border.
Carrionplace is located to the Northwest, and cats will hunt here occasionally. Other areas are usually preferred, but Carrionplace rats are often turned to when other prey is scarce. Contrary to the stereotypes, they do not eat crowfood, but hunting parties do often come back smelling like it.
Clantember
Cutting it close here, but here is one question for each day of September! For the most part these should work for AUs, fanclans, or other clan-adjacent groups. Could also be done as an ask game.

Bonuses (sub out for any day):
One background character who may not get much spotlight in the actual story.
A tradition.
A myth.
Hey all! For anyone wondering how this project is going, I've actually been working on it a bunch behind the scenes! I've written little scenes here or there for practice, but I'm actually getting close to having everything set up enough to start writing proper!
I'm going to try to get a big ol chunk of writing done during NaNoWriMo, so I'm thinking that each day of September I'll post a lore tidbit of some sort. I'll prep the list of things I'll be covering ahead of time and posting it to sparrowminder, so anyone else can answer along with me!
For some reason the links in worldbuilding aren't working for me, it might just be my kindle, but if it isn't so you have think you can fix it?
I actually just haven’t linked anything there yet, I believe all links will be styled as underlines once I actually...do that.
I will put it on my to-do list!
Where are the allegiances I can’t find them
The allegiances have been taking down. I had them up earlier, but enough things needed to be reworked that I decided to wait until they were absolutely, for sure, 100% final before posting them again.
Finally finished this, and goodness it took forever. It’s the map for Four Fates! Most of it is just canon with added landmarks and minor changes, but my other goal was to show a decent sense of scale, since I don’t think the canon maps really accomplished that. Individual trees, houses, and landmarks are still considerably enlarged, but hopefully it gives a better idea of how big the territories are!
Since multiple people asked over the course of working on this, yes, I’m happy to do map work on commission. This is by far the most detailed one I’ve done, and would be pretty expensive, but I have done simpler ones in the past!
I’m interested in seeing you do justice to the queens- I love the vast majority of them, and I trust that you’ll give them more personality and not, y’know, pull an Erin Hunter and kill one off because she’s just “a baby maker” (still salty that happened)
Yeah! Admittedly I’ve noticed I’m a bit lacking in headcanon material for the ItW queens but I’m really excited to write the ones in Four Fates! I’m working on getting little character profiles ready to post so you’ll be able to see some of that soon!
did you change the families of the main protags from four fates ?
There have been some changes, mostly for story purposes.
Laurel (baby Tall) is clearly not Sandshade’s bio kit, which has a pretty large effect on his story, but his mother is still the same and Finchkit still existed and died.
Soot (Yellow) is now the only flat-faced cat at the time of her birth, rather than inheriting it from Brightflower. Brightflower mated with a Persian kittypet who is still unnamed and may or may not ever show up. She’s still close to her grandma Silverfang.
Blue and Snow are littermates, but technically half-sisters - Snow’s sire is Stoatfang (Sunfall) and Blue’s is Stormtail. Stormtail and Stonepelt are gay and asked Mothflower if they could sire a litter and help with the kittens, and she agreed. So Blue and Snow get three dads!
And Crooked’s family is totally unchanged. The family dynamics will remain largely the same as well.
Does BluexOak still exists in your AU ?
Yep! I’ve waffled back and forth on having it be BlueCrooked instead but currently BlueOak is planned.
Are there any nonbinary cats? If so, how do the clans handle it? Do they see it as normal?
Yeah, there are some where I could fit them in! They aren’t particularly common, but there are usually a few per clan at any given time and it’s considered normal. Most of them will be cats without a specified canon gender/described both ways at different times/ones who died as kits in canon, but there are a few that are just because I said so.
Hello! What's a silly background fact of Four Fates that you likely won't be able to cover in the main series? Gorsetail/Beechfur type stuff!
Lionheart is TC’s local gay dad! He and Whitestorm are lowkey mates, Whitestorm is bi and also with Willowpelt!
I would also like to note that if people do guess right about certain things that I haven’t revealed that aren’t actually huge plot spoilers (parentage, who the five souls cats are, etc) I will tell you! If you’re in the Feline Fiction server, no cheating please!
