ﾟ･:*｡  ARIEL  SHRUGGED  WHIMSICALLY  ,  the  edges  of  her  ultramarine  eyes  crinkling  .  next  to  winnie  ,  she  wasn’t  sure  that  there  was  anything  sunnyside  loved  as  much  as  its  gossip  ,  and  the  boy’s  name  had  breezed  off  enough  tongues  after  he  had  led  the  detective  team  to  the  beloved  bakery  owner’s  badge  .  she  could  still  remember  the  way  that  her  father  had  even  muttered  it  over  morning  breakfast  and  his  daily  read  of  the  paper  as  he  reminded  her  that  boys  like  that  were  beacons  for  trouble  .  ❝  more  or  less  .  i  don’t  know  most  strangers  names  .  ❞

                  “ YOU DIDN’T MEAN to touch a random stranger’s scars ? “, the guy asked, his tone remaining rather flat as he finally tore his gaze away from his scar in order to fix it on the red head. it was pretty obvious from the blush on her features that she felt busted, and jim couldn’t help but feel a sting of guilt go through him – he didn’t want to embarras her, or put her on the spot. he simply wasn’t big on getting his personal space invaded. when she pulled her hand back, the guy let out a silent sigh before letting his hand touch the scar himself. “ just an accident from when i was young. “, he replied, keeping it short. there truly wasn’t much more to say. he had plenty of small scars, all of them because of his clumsy young ass falling down or getting into fights. 

ﾟ･:*｡  ARIEL’S  MOUTH  HAD  opened  and  just  as  quickly  shut  in  response  .   his  flat  tone  had  caught  the  small  girl  off  guard  and  if  it  weren’t  for  the  glimpse  of  herself  reflected  in  his  eyes  ,  she  would’ve  thought  she’d  melted  right  then  and  there  in  a  puddle  on  the  pavement  out  of  sheer  embarrassment  .  her  fingertips  drew  into  her  palms  after  displaying  them  in  that  universal  gesture  of  i  mean  no  harm  ;  i  come  in  peace ,  hands  tucking  towards  her  sides  like  they’d  been  burnt  from  the  way  he’d  called  her  out  and  challenged  her  impulsiveness  .  if  daddy  could  see  me  now  ,  she’d  thought  .  would  he  tell  her  that  he’d  told  her  so  ?  ❝  you’re  the  boy  who  made  those  town  headlines  .  .  .  ❞  she  had  finally  found  her  voice  and  that  was  what  she  thought  to say ? not  even  that  he’d  helped  her  out  with  her  display  a  few  weeks  back  ?  someone  put  a  shoe  in  this  girl’s  mouth !  ❝  -  -  maybe  you’re  not  as  random  of  a  stranger  as  you  think  .  ❞

                   JIM WAS USUALLY one to be kind of prone on his personal space. he was taken off guard, though, when he suddenly felt soft, warm fingers trail across the scar he got on his forearm. he had attempted to hide it with one of his inks but apparently, the person near him must’ve discovered it. looking at the scar before looking over at the smaller red haired girl standing next to him, jim cleared his throat in an attempt to get her attention and hopefully, shift hers away from the scar. { @wcnderinfree​ }

Typically, rolling up to the shops was far from Lock’s favourite chore - but there was something about the sudden splashes of orange and black, coupled with cardboard cutout witches and ghosts thrown up in every storefront, hanging from the ceilings, that made topping up the family’s groceries not only bearable, but appealing. Halloween was the one holiday where he was willing to turn a blind eye to the fact everyone who could was taking advantage of the occasion to make money and instead just revel in it, for the sake of nostalgia if nothing else - though he was still far from giving up on celebrating, it had been the one night of the year that he’d always been able to look forward to no matter what other bullshit was going on around him as a kid, and it was that exact attachment that made him nothing short of furious when he took a glance into the person in front of him’s shopping basket at what they’d stocked up on for the night. “Jesus, is that really all you’re handing out?” he scoffed with a slight shake of the head, making sure to nudge their shoulder to grab their attention. “It’s like you’re aiming to make kids miserable.”

Headphones in, Jane jogged down the street at an even pace. Sunnyside might not have been exotic, but at least it was peaceful. The sun shined, the sky was blue and she could have sworn a few people actually smiled at her as she passed. I was strange to think that this was the same town with such dark rumors surrounding it. Having just moved there, she didn’t know the full scope of everything that had happened, but she knew enough from whatever idle gossip she picked up from the local ranch hands. Someone had disappeared and it had left them all in shock. She slowed to a walk and took in a deep breath, checking her time on her watch. When she spotted a wisp of red hair in her peripheral, she tugged one of her ear buds out of her ear and frowned at her. “I’m sorry, what?” She said, still taking deep breaths. She smiled at the display. “Wow, that’s pretty. Were you saying something?”

ﾟ･:*｡  ARIEL  GIGGLED  IN  response  ,  a  friendly  smile  tugging  upon  her  lips  .  ❝  asked  something  ,  actually  ,  but  you’ve  already  helped  me  heaps  with  that  compliment  .  .  .  thank  you  for  that  ,  by  the  way .  i  wanted  to  spruce  the  look  of  the  window  up  and  was  a  little  worried  i’d  made  a  mess  of  it  ,  ❞  she  explained  ,  carding  her  fingers  through  the  length  of  her  fiery  locks  .  she’s  suddenly  acutely  aware  of  the  way  the other  seems  to  be  catching  her  breath  ,  realizing  she  must’ve  caught  her  at  the  tail  end  of  some  exercise  .  it’s  with  another  glance  ,  however  ,  that  she’s started  trying  to  put  a  name  to  the  face  but  quickly  coming  up  short  .   ❝  you  know  ,  i  don’t  think  we’ve  met  before  .  are  you  -  -  you’re  not  from  around  here  ,  are  you  ?  ❞  even  without  a  name  ,  she’d  always  been  pretty  skilled  at  remembering  faces  she’d  seen  in  passing  around  town  .

               THE GIRL’S TEASING caused a hint of red to appear on his cheeks as he felt called out. he wasn’t sure how to reply, so instead he just brought his hand up to rub at the nape of his neck as he cleared his throat. luckily, she quickly cut to the chase causing jim to turn on his heels in order to fully face the window display. “ oh. “, the guy let out eventually. “ it looks great. very, erm… inviting. “, he explained with a firm nod before turning his head back to look at her.  “ so – you work here ? or are you just hired to take care of the window display ? “.

ﾟ･:*｡  BITING  DOWN  ON  her  lip  ,  ariel  suppressed  any  little  giggle  that  dared  to  come  out  as  she  caught  the  way  his  cheeks  grew  rosy  from  her  light  teasing  -  -  wanting  to  spare  him  from  any  further  embarrassment  .  ❝  really  .  .  .  you  think  so  ?  ❞  she  asked  ,  peering  at  the  guy  a  bit  more  intently  and  searching  for  any  hints  of  uncertainty  or  deception  she  might  find  in  his  resolute  expression  in  any  kind  effort  to  spare  her  feelings  .  but  either  he’s  a  hard  read  or  she’s  found  none  ,  optimistically  deeming  it  the  latter  and  smiling  a  bit  more  confidently  at  her  handiwork  .  ❝  as  much  as  i’d  love  to  boast  that  sort  of  professional  creativity  ,  i  work  here  and  had  really  just  a  little  too  much  time  on  my  hands  ,  ❞   she  sheepishly  admitted  .  ❝  have  you  ever  stopped  in  ?  because  you  know  if  you  like  this  .  .  .   the  inside  ,  it’s  sort  of  -  -  wondrous  .  ❞
