The blogger behind this account may be better known for a certain European equivalent, but I started out doing Japanese swordsmanship first. Lately, I've been getting back into it, studying the footwork, and looking for resources that approach a basic practical approach to kenjutsu. For those interested, I would be happy to share the above, run by a well known fencer, making adapting a basic approach to Japanese swordsmanship possible!

Quick review of The Sword and the Mind.
Your mileage may vary as to whether or not Munenori was as good a swordsman as all that, but his book is full of astute advice for any fencer.
Firstly, his book is about 1/3rd fencing techniques, and 2/3rds philosophy. To understand his swordsmanship, you will need to review visual elements such as videos of Shinkage practitioners to really make sense of his techniques, but when you combine with his writing, it makes a lot of coherent sense.
His philosophy itself is fascinating. He observes at the time he writes that swordsmen are essentially past their usage date, as the Edo period sets in. His book becomes his form of maintaining relevance in a changing world, justifying his existence. But interestingly, his book is mostly about his philosophy of "either kill no one, or kill one man to save hundreds". Elements of this pop up in his combat doctrine: he recommends targeting the opponent's hands to deprive them of their weapon in most instances (something that will harm them but not slay them, and deprive them of the means to harm others), but also includes a handful of lethal techniques for when this is not sufficient. Additionally, he includes some techniques meant to confuse and thwart skilled fencers by unorthodox methods.
If you have any interest in samurai, kenjutsu, HEMA, or Japan at the start of the Edo period, this book is well worth picking up.

A New Path for the Collective Public Discord
Having existed since 2018, the discord server has gone through a variety of phases and purposes. It has come to the point where in our growth we have developed beyond the original intention of an attachment of the tumblr presence. The question has been asked of whether the server and it's members are served well by the current attachment, and a referrendum of our server members has decided with overwhelming majority that is it time for us to fly the nest and strike out on our own. we will not be removing the collective fully from us - the collective was our origin and home and the origin of everything we have built, but is it my opinion that it is time for us to spread our wings and become something in our own right.
We hold no ill will to the Collective, and we’re grateful for all our experiences there as our foundation for this, and for the friendships we made through it. However, numbers wise, we see some distinction as our discord server has grown in community beyond what isolated tumblr blogs could. For the creative freedom and community of us and our server members, we will be severing official ties to the Collective, in the spirit of freeing our own creative decisions to grow our space going forwards. The server will not be removing our collective members, nor will it become an unwelcome space for those of you who have joined us or will join us - it will simply be becoming a space of it's own, tied to nothing but itself. Fortunately, you can obtain your own!
As the Samurai is also the Knight of @we-are-knight , I have a bias toward weapons of a length greater than a standard katana, so I have been loving this sword so far. The length is more familiar to a longsword (if actually longer than my longswords), and extremely light for what it is. The flex is incredible for full contact fighting, too.
Since I started my fencing career with Kendo, it's been a dream of mine to use a nodachi, and might have been part of my reason for taking up the longsword. Now I have my own, and I am ✨thrilled✨.
