This is only the beginning. Our country has not only entered a new decade, it seems a new dawning era as well, because this flaming apocalypse doesn't show any sign of stopping any time soon.

And you know what saddens me? I've never seen Australian tragedies trending here on this website. I mean it's been going on for months and only now does it seem to really be getting recognized, even if it is only at #9.

And I'm going to be honest with you here - the internet, and media in general is so American centric, this website being no exception. You'd think that an entire continent being on fire for several months with devastating consequences would have more recognition, but no, it really doesn't. The most notes I've ever seen on a post about the Australian fires is at least a few thousand, and that's about it.

So just... please. If you can, with this post or any other post in regards to the fires going on down here, reblog. Because the only thing that should be spreading like wildfire, is a post about a burning country...

The area burnt in New South Wales alone at the moment is equivalent to the entire area of the Netherlands. I'm too tired to link sources on that but yall can google, i was out working in the smoke for 14 hours on NYE so like... I'm kinda wiped out. The smoke is constant in Sydney. This has been our lives for like over a month now.

I don't live in Austrailia, but I have been wanting to raise awareness about this. This isn't how the media shpuld respond - it's cancelling out everything that has nothing to do with America. I'm British, personally, and I would much rather see a charity page going around Tumblr for the Austrailian Wildfires to help fund for fire services, external support, search and rescues for both animals and people, help to emigrate and evacuate, all that. I want to see that. Not whatever the fuck is happening in America. I don't care. People are dying and I want to give all my money to help fund that. Even if I don't have much, I want to help, because a whole continent? In flames? Is stupid. If every World Leader put their heads together, they would have thoight 'oh Austrailia needs our help, let's actually help them instead of letting them suffer with a media blackout!'

And what really ticks me off is taht if America started helping, then the issue would be spread around and people would know - so clearly a whole part of our country being on fire isn't enough to qualify for help apparently.

My best wishes goes to those in Austrailia, having to suffer these wildfires. If I could help, I would, but I'm only a 17 year old in England, there's not much I can do. But please, signal boost this and spread it around! This needs more notes than it has!

i was tempted to reblog the post but I do Not have the energy for drama but what I do have is a masters degree in an adjacent topic and a phd-in-progress in another adjacent topic.

When people say ‘oh how lonely our queer ancestors were, all alone and with no words for their identities’ what they’re doing is spouting nihilistic, ahistorical nonsense.

Yes, the words we use now are a largely modern invention, and the rest are possibly late victorian. We had other words before that. And other words before those, and other words before those. We will have new words in the future. “Didn’t have the vocabulary” is a nonsense statement. “We don’t know what vocabulary they used” is a better one. “Largely, for much of western history up until the late nineteen-hundreds, what we would now call sexual identity didn’t culturally exist” is a far better statement. Yes, you had queer folks. of course you did. They may well have thought of their sexual lives as an inherent part of their identity - some of them must have, to get that political ball rolling (everyone say hi to Edward Carpenter as we roll past). However, by and large, sexual identity, culturally, wasn’t a thing. Everything was behavior, not identity-based. So, as much as they will most likely have had the vocabulary, they wouldn’t necessarily have needed the same kinds of vocabulary as we do now. because they didn’t think of it the same.

And maybe some of them were alone. Maybe, to quote one of the most bigoted comedy double acts that I can personally remember because fuck you david walliams, they were the only gay in the village. But you know Molly houses existed? You know people whisper and explore and find communities, find people and connect with them? Whole chains of queer people, connecting up between countries and generations? That happened. That has been happening.

Yes, unrecorded history is a thing. It is very much a thing. But Eleanor Rykener existed, and, from what I’ve gathered, had a community of queer folk around her. William Shakespeare and half his friends? Queer. King James? Queer. Anne Lister found many a girlfriend. James Barry? Trans. Had a boyfriend. Throw a stone from 1800 to 1910 and you’ll hit a queer person (and get their number). Walt Whitman was so gay that ‘does he read Walt Whitman’ was code for ‘is he gay’. Rent boys were picking up men outside the courthouse after testifying at Wilde’s trial.

The classical world was wildly queer. We know this! People have always known this! Always! 

Look, yes, there are whole acres of unrecorded history. Yes, there are many lost and lonely queer folks across history, and mourning them is natural and I get it, I do. My whole academic career is built on that. But we have a history. We have always had community. Always. Not everyone could access it, for sure. But to paint our history as a constant isolated misery is to write over our actual history.

I just finished watching HBO’s Chernobyl, better late than never. I admit that I had both time and mood to watch it before, I just lacked courage because I know how sensitive I am when it comes to suffering and injustice. But I did it. Every time, I both did want and didn’t want to watch the next episode. And I started the last episode telling myself I really don’t want to see any more of this but I have to finish it. 

Someone already said that in the end, the reality is the scariest genre. Chernobyl didn’t need monsters or ghost or zombies or whatever, to be the most horrific, upsetting, chilling thing I have ever watched in my life. I have seen my fair share of horror movies that end and you just tell yourself… it’s entertainment, it’s fiction. Chernobyl was naked reality. Some of it even toned down. 

It also shed light on the egocentric, selfish and straight up fucked up regime of the Soviet Union, which is something very close to me because as slovak person I grew up listening to all about it.  Final review? It’s a good series. As a big fan of history and all adaptations of past events, I call it a damn masterpiece. But it’s not going to make you feel good, you won’t be glad you’re watching it. You’ll be glad it’s only five episodes and you can start getting over it. It will stay with you for a while, trust me. And you can’t even tell yourself that at least it isn’t real and that makes it even worse.

Hello, college grad that actually wrote an award winning paper on this topic! Here’s some knowledge I’d like to share: There’s actually been studies as to why it’s usually white kids, a large conclusion amongst the criminology community is that those that often have more privileged lives (white kids in our society’s case) are less adept to dealing with stress and denial. Whereas minorities and others are more likely to cope and function normally despite stressors because of the constant stressors that come from systematic racism and/or other platforms of more limited priviledge.

TL;DR: It’s usually a white kid because their privilege incacipated their ability to learn how to handle stress/ denial/ whatever without acting out. The less privileged are done used to the bs and thus typically dont turn to extreme measures as coping mechanisms.
