Here in Australia, this is what has been happening over the past few days. The media is largely ignoring it, despite it being one of the largest protests in this countryâs history. My state has also just passed laws that will come into effect in September that put restrictions on protesting which could lead to two years imprisonment. Our Prime Minister wonât even acknowledge that this has been happening.

Please get this circulating. Australian media refuses to cover it and the government is pretending it didnât happen even though there were people on their doorsteps at Parliament house. People in Australia are discontented with the way asylum seekers are treated like criminals, indigenous people are still being treated horribly, that our prime minister is a racist, sexist, homophobe who appointed himself as Minister for Women, that our health care is threatened, that our environment is being treated as a commodity, that our university funding is being cut, and that our Prime Minister doesnât âbelieveâ in climate change and that this country now only caters to the rich and conservative. And that barely scratches the surface.
What this government does is not in our name and we need to get the message out there, loud and clear.

They donât want you to see this, because for years successive governments have been de-humanising asylum seekers, they have been characterised as  âillegalsâ and worse. The government dosnât want you to see this letter, or any like it, as it does the opposite, it humanises our asylum seekers, it serves to put a human voice to the suffering our government is inflicting.
The contents will break your heart. If you donât already, it will make you question everything the government is doing in our name.

23 year old Iranian asylum seeker was killed this week on Manus Island under Australian care.
Contractors on the island described him as a 'gentle giant' and he was 'known to be a joker'.
He helped out daily in handing out medical slips and appointment slips to his fellow detainees, wanting to keep mentally active.
He also worked out daily and encouraged his friends to keep fit and healthy.
The contractors met him nearly every day and helped him learn English by reading him children's books.
âHe used to always pick up bugs and moths off the ground and put them back in the garden, worried that someone would step on them. (The guys used to feed the moths to cane toad frogs around the compound for fun... There wasnât much else to do...) He used to try and stop them.â

In Focus: Bloody Battles in Kiev
Flames engulfed the main anti-government protest camp on Kievâs Independence Square as riot police tried to force demonstrators out following the bloodiest clashes in three months of protests. The iconic square turned into a war zone as riot police moved slowly through opposition barricades, hurling stun grenades and using water cannon to clear protestors. At least thirteen people were killed and scores injured today, as protestors took back control of Kievâs city hall just two days after vacating the building.
