"Much of the reason we hold ourselves back isnât lack of will, talent, or abilityâitâs lack of follow-through, says Canning. We become disorganized or run out of time to take the steps necessary to realize our goals. "You can get incredibly lucky or you can be very well connected. But for most people, it comes down to refining your intentions, getting incredibly organized, and setting up some sort of framework for consequences in the event of failure," he says. Lean on your network to keep yourself accountable and ensure youâll follow through on the things that you say youâre going to do."

"Commit to nothing and get distracted by everything." Nothing else matters but what you're committed to. No matter how long something takes, if it's part of your dream, do it.

Next time youâre telling yourself youâre going to do it tomorrow, or you start convincing yourself you miraculously sprained an ankle, just read this.
âThe best mental tool is to relax when youâre thinking about going. The next thing is bucking up to that fear of failure and that self-protection (which is why people donât do things) and not looking for excuses for why not to do it. Looking honestly at what youâre afraid of helps. Try to be constructive with yourself. Have certain cues, whether itâs trying to improve your technique or form, or just getting through a routine, and use self-talk. Focus on breathing, just trying to relax and settle down, so you can actually focus on execution as opposed to getting distracted by the results and by the idea of not being good enough.â
"There are three laws of the universe: there will always be pain; there will always be uncertainty; and life will always require effort. Anybody that says you can be exonerated from these laws is lying."
ORGANIZED PEOPLE PROJECT THEMSELVES INTO THE FUTURE Using a two-person mind-setâpresent self and future selfâcan help you stay organized, says Lorie Marrero, founder of the Clutter Diet, an online organizing program. She likes to think of her future self when she takes care of small tasks right away. "If I walk through a room and see a mess, I will say, âI bet if I do those dishes now my future self will be so much happier later," she says. "That motivates me to do those favors for my future self." Marrero says organized people also think into the future when they add activities to their calendars: "They ask: âWhat could I do before, during, or after this appointment to improve it?â" she says. If they need to prepare for it, bring something to it, or follow up after it, they schedule it now and put it on their task list.
