- “There is no problem. If what you desire of me is a more formal introduction… it is only logical. I shall give you what you desire.”
[There was this odd, eerie feeling that came from the man he was speaking with. One that if he was any weaker than he was… would probably trigger inside Kaleb an unusual urge to run away screaming. He was dealing with something dangerous, something more powerful than the things he was used to…
… but the king showed no fear. He was not allowed to. What kind of man, what kind of a ruler would he be if he cowered every single time he met a strong, dignified opponent? Although Lucile was far from being something like that for the meanwhile.]
- “I am the king of Tartarus, a place humans call the Abyss. With that, you already know I am not human… even though you are something far from one, either.
Hospitality and such shall not be necessary, although I shall say that I appreciate the concern. I am not allowed to stay away for too long. Any desire that I harbor of visiting another realms are fueled by my selfish curiosity. But beneath that I am still a king. I cannot allow myself to stay away from my own world for too long, no matter how interesting are the things that I see.
… I hope this was a satisfying answer, Lucile.”
[An adviser and protector to the king, then? He could think of someone in a similar position to him… in his case, a bit more extreme than someone who would merely watch over the ruler of this country. Kaleb kept his composure and answered the question without any change in his tone, polite but cold. He already gave out his name, and now his position. There was no need and no advantage for him to hide such things, at least not to this man.
This could prove to be an interesting conversation, after all.]
- “…In other words, I am the king of demons. Does this sate your curiosity?”
A king, yes, but of lands he had never even heard of, even with the help of--well, his pool of ill-garnered knowledge had turned out to be much more limited than expected. Lucile kept his smile rigidly in place despite a mix of curiosity and irritation; any unknown who could pose a potential threat to the king of Roland was someone to be watched closely.
The man's words had given him reason to be on guard for any signs of aggression or animosity, but at the same time he detected no emotion other than cool indifference and mild curiosity.
"Tartarus... I've never heard of such a place before." Hell: the first association that came to mind was hell. Wherever it was that people went when they died, Lucile wasn't sure and wasn't terribly concerned. "And you are its ruler? A position of power indeed."
It was, if nothing else, good conversation to while away time and perhaps learn something new and of value to himself and the... grand scheme of things.
"I understand. My own king would likely be preoccupied with other business and unable to attend your visit. Unfortunate that you arrived in the middle of night..." Lucile bowed. "But I will do my best in his stead."
Gesturing down the darkened halls behind him, Lucile remained, as per usual, emotionless beyond his fake smile.
"If you'd like to discuss matters further while you are able to remain, I should at least offer you someplace to sit." He turned slowly. "A demon king is something I am indeed curious to hear about. Anyway, if you would follow me."
Well, if nothing else, Kaleb Blackwood was an interesting visitor.
arcana imperii.
- “It is not a problem.”
[There was something odd and funny about visiting different worlds. Ones would be welcoming, others harsh. There were times when his presence went by completely unnoticed, which was fine for him. Sometimes he would have to deal with hostility - resulting in such unpleasant relationships. Potential worlds to conquer, possible allies, people that he should be mindful of, places where he should not even consider touching — he sees them all and goes back to his world where time goes by painfully slow for his own good. This man would undoubtedly fall into the ‘people to be aware of’ category, although Kaleb never changed his expression - or lack of as his voice showed up again, unemotional as ever. Truly a perfect ruler, one who has absolute control of his emotions, one that would make everything go according to his wish——]
- “It would be a shame if a visit like this would go unnoticed, to be you rather than it being no one… my name is Kaleb Blackwood. I should apologize for appearing so abruptly, and if I am interrupting anything I will take my leave.”
[And the same oddity could be sensed again, coming from this blonde man whose beauty seemed to far surpass anything the demon had seen up until know. He was strong, so there was no reason for a challenge. It would be a waste of time to be disrespectful, he was in foreign lands after all.]
- “If not, I would like to know your name.”
[A name was but that. A name. What or who exactly he was… was another question completely.]
Like a grinning phantasm, the blonde seemed to nearly glide across the floor, so smooth and fluid was his gait. This man was clearly no human, as delicate as his features might make an unobservant bystander think otherwise. And, another oddity, the man did not have that air of unease that most who had the undesirable opportunity to meet with the head of House Eris seemed to bear so openly upon their faces.
Any sort of urge he had to dispose of this visitor from the castle had all but vanished, and the smile upon Lucile's lips could very nearly be mistaken for genuine smile, were it not for rigid set of his face.
"It would be a terrible shame for someone of... obvious high stature to simply pass through quietly and without welcome." Lucile tilted his head slightly to the side. "Considering your rather unusual entrance, I would say that His Majesty would most definitely be open to at least offering you accommodations and a modest welcome."
A sort of muffled chuckle nearly tumbled from his lips, stifled to a low hum by practiced restraint. It had come from a rather odd sense of... well, it couldn't be called humor with Lucile, more an awareness of irony--and oh, was it ironic to have visitors at such a time like this, with war on the immediate horizon. His king would likely attempt some sort of hospitality but given that nigh on every matter in Roland required his attention at this point it was likely that he would not be able to spare himself for polite chitchat and potential interrogation for long.
"My name? Lucile. I serve the king of Roland and answer to him alone." Stepping forward and slowly closing the distance between himself and the man with silvery-white hair, he opened his eyes.
"I would ask that you extend me the same courtesy as I have given you with my name." Not a question but a statement.
—arcanum {lucile&ferris.
A response she had known too well would surface.
Features hardened as eyes narrowed, falling upon the newly materialized figure that now stood within the center of the dojo. Unnerved, muscles flexing as she clenched teeth together at his visible presence. Always that etched smile openly displayed, like a clown grinning at the most minuscule misfortune it could discover; amplifying it to the entertainment of the rest of the crowd.
Speech uttered from him was always a bother. “Mn? What concerns my partner concerns me. That is what partners are for.“
A sentiment this doll like woman had come to learn in time. This blade had only bitten into those who threatened her own, solitary existence. Until circumstances brought this man who lead such a lonesome life as she to her; akin to a soulmate, bound by a strange cycle. Whether the odds may not be in their favour, neither would abandon the other.
Protecting this man until the bitter end.
And to accomplish this, she would sacrifice what she must.
“… I cannot be there for them like this, not without knowing. Not without understanding what my partner and that King are enduring. Even if I cannot comprehend it all at once… even if it hurts, I will bear it. For my partner — for my friends.“
Soles tread forward, enough to close the distance until an arms length of this strange apparition she conversed with. Adamant to remain, as if she were but a mountain unwilling to move until she had obtained what she sought.
There were times when Lucile could not distinguish that the woman who he called sister was even a child, once upon a time. Instead there was a young lady, face wrought in an expression of stone, gazing at him with eyes of clearest blue. So very close to him now, and yet still... So very far away.
Long ago, perhaps he would have reached out to her and--mm, what was it that he used to do? Memories of such times seemed to be thousands of years into the past, just out of reach.
Just like everything else.
"Still, there are some things even those we are closest to are not meant to know, yes?"
To increase the distance between them--slowly, very slowly, so as to perhaps conceal it from her gaze--Lucile used a very simplistic illusion. To stand so close to his sister in this light was... unfitting.
Her concern for that alpha stigma bearer was unfitting as well; while Ryner was close to her, he would never be able to actually be anything for her. He made a suitable friend but ultimately... ultimately he would bring about nothing.
And his majesty? That Ferris called him friend was concerning, but, in the end, unimportant as well. She would never be able to comprehend the man or his woebegotten destiny--rather, she needed to be shielded from all of this.
"Ferris, I am afraid I cannot tell you. Aside from the obvious damage it would do you, do you not think that they would have told you of their plights themselves if they had wished you to know?"
arcana imperii.
In midnight hours, the halls of his majesty's castle resembled something horrifically frightening--not unlike a children's fairy tale that had been twisted into something terribly, terribly wrong. Shadows crawled across walls and floors and stretched into nightmarish figures. Doors became caverns from which unearthly denizens could crawl, and the halls seemed fit for the dead to rise and roam once again.
Darkness transformed the ordinary lay of the castle into something entirely phantasmal, a netherworld in and of its own.
Lucile would not have referred to it as a "comfort," to exist in this darkness and keep watch while his king rested, no. It was more of a feeling of belonging, of having no other place in which he could live without upsetting some natural balance in the world.
Him, existing as part of something "natural"... that was laughable in and of itself.
The unnatural, however, was easily within his realm of understanding; a flash of soundless light and a thump brought about a, while unexpected, relatively normal-looking person. Relative was, of course, the key descriptor here. What a strange force, the energy that radiated from this man. Inhuman, one could call it.
White hair, and clothing of ebon and crimson--and eyes of the same red.
That smile wrought in ice never left Lucile's lips.
"A visitor at these hours? How unusual--and no one about to greet you save for me.
"...Unfortunate, really."
Lucile allowed a hand of his to trail across the wall as he approached the man who had come from seemingly nowhere.
"I would suggest you introduced yourself quickly."

Zephyrs swept along the dirtied streets within the city, drowning the dwindling noises into nonexistence. Vibrant orange faded into darkness as the setting sun departed beneath the distant horizon. Carmine and pink lights which bathed the lands of Roland hiding behind the blackened clouds that threatened the peace for this night. A storm setting close as the woman finally stepped her first foot within the vicinity of her home.
Months had passed since the swordswoman had returned to these origins, golden locks framing her porcelain visage. Cerulean optics exempt of emotion belonging to the familiar sister that the head of this clan cherished so. Split from her partner, she felt it only appropriate to delve into findings of her own. Unfortunately, this research involved exchanging speech with the one person she had grown to dislike.
… the man who had changed from her brother to an undeniable stranger.
Boots sounded over the gravel, winds escalating as her frail frame found the way to her destination. Double doors which harboured the entity whom she looked, a few digits trailing gently over as if reconsidering this action. Had she not come this far only to find disappointment if she were to turn and walk away? Lips curled downward, slender arms exerting effort to unblock her path.
“Brother.”
Vocables echoed throughout the seemingly empty dojo, the entry shutting at the wind’s mercy. Hands curled into fists as the young Eris stood silently, letting eyes examine each wall before staring straight ahead to continue on.
For now, it was certainly too late to retreat. “I am not here to fool around. Tell me, what’s wrong with Sion? I want to know what you keep hidden from me.”
So very few people paid visits to the head of the Eris clan that it would have been considered pitiable by the standards of most of Roland's noble class.
Pitiable, yes--but for whom?
When not shadowing Roland's king as an ever-present phantasm of a bodyguard, Lucile haunted this place. It was reminiscent of a crypt, this site of his parents' death; a place where none but the souls of the formerly living roamed eternal. It was only fitting, after all, that a man--if he could even be deemed such any more--like himself reside in the shadows.
Like a proper monster.
Even then, he rarely made himself visible to the imagined dead souls that wandered here, choosing to wrap himself up in the darkness within the dark, observing all but seen by none.
No matter how far Lucile could see, he had not expected this particular event: the return of his beloved sister.
As the door slammed open he chose to remain hidden from human eyes--or would have, had Ferris not approached that, of all subjects. Like a horrific apparition in the guise of a human, he appeared in the center of the cavernous dojo, a frosted smile permanently painted across his face in mocking affability.
"Ah, my dear sister has returned home unexpectedly, mm? If I had known I would have perhaps been more prepared to greet you."
"You come asking of such grave matters that don't concern you and aren't worth your time in worrying."
--and, with the same even, eerily calm tone--
"If you knew, you would rather you hadn't, and I wouldn't wish that on my sweet sister."
