Given  his  choice,  Gale  is  not  one  for  mornings.  He  prefers  the  warmer  and  more  golden  hours,  the  later  hours.  But:  there's  not  much  for  choice  out  here,  not  with  the  ground  unforgivingly  hard  and  even  the  best  bedroll  a  poor  substitute  for  a  proper  bed.  (  ——  he's  grown  used  to  comfort.  He  wouldn't  deny  it.  )

And  so:  he's  commonly  one  of  first  awake,  and  so  has  taken  on  the  responsibilities  of  getting  a  hot  kettle  of  water  going  over  the  fire  for  tea,  and  also  putting  together  whatever  oft-meagre  offerings  for  breakfast  they've  managed  to  scrounge.  He's  excellent  at  making  do,  and  enjoys  doing  it,  besides.

His  smile  is  humored,  taking  the  cuff  with  grace.  "  Ah,  but  is  it  the  sadist  who  drags  one  out  of  bed  so  early,  or,  "  and  a  haunt  of  a  more  teasing  smile,  a  wag  of  a  finger,  "  the  masochist  who  lets  their  breakfast  grow  cold?  "  He  tuts.  "  Up,  up,  now,  it's  a  good  morning.  With  quail  eggs  and  tomatoes  with  wild  basil.  Delightful,  utterly.  "

It’s  not  as  though  he  plays  at  secrecy  for  any  calculated  reason,  much  less  any  nefarious  one.  Part  of  it  may  be  buried  in  embarrassment  —  or  guilt  —  to  be  certain,  but  there’s  also  the  blunt  truth  that  he  has  been  isolated  for  so  long  that  certain  social  skills  have  slowly  eroded,  and  perhaps  he’s  come  to  get  used  to  the  idea  that  the  one  around  him  most  knew  him  better  than  he  knew  himself,  most  days.  

"  Well.  "  And  he’s  a  little  unsure  what  to  say  to  this,  but  he  tries  a  small  smile  regardless.  "  We  all  have  our  secrets,  I  suppose,  do  we  not?  "  The  hungry  knot  within  his  chest  feels  like  a  burning  anchor,  and  though  that’s  no  secret  anymore,  there’s  some  rueful  humor  in  the  unintended  implication  —  and,  in  the  wag  of  a  finger,  an  unintentional  misdirection  and  simultaneously  a  fine  example  of  precisely  what  she  accuses  him  of.  "  I  like  to  imagine  I  have  shared  much  of  what’s  going  on  inside  of  me,  to  my  initial  chagrin.  "

For  a  heartbeat  or  two,  he  says  nothing  ——  and  then  he  rallies!  And  he  also  tuts,  mildly.  "  Were  oranges  named  for  the  color,  or  the  color  for  the  orange?  Ah,  chicken  and  the  egg,  the  eternal  conundrum.  " 

He  smiles,  easily,  warmly  ——  and  also  with  just  a  shade  of  concern.  He  pauses,  then  starts  to  say  something  ——  starts,  stops,  tentatively  starts  again:  "  ——  have  you  ——  ah,  indulged,  per  chance,  in  those  mushrooms  in  our  stores?  If  so,  perhaps  some  nice  tea  and  some  warm  buttered  bread  would  do  you  well.  "

There  is  a  certain  reservation  he  must  have  in  public  — removed,  polite,  familiar  without  intimacy.  It’s  a  balance  to  be  had,  but  it’s  one  he  walks  with  relative  grace,  and  it’s  equally  one  he  lets  fall  as  soon  as  they  are  behind  closed  doors.  It’s  like  being  able  to  let  go  of  pretenses  —  let  go  of  carefully  constructed  cautionary  mannerisms  that  become  more  and  more  difficult  to  layer  atop  one  another.  And  he  handles  it  with  grace,  he  does,  but  even  so  ——  it's  like  setting  down  a  great  and  vast  weight  when  he  is  able.

"  Oh,  I  have  many  magic  abilities,  "  he  grants  with  a  smile.  "  But  I  do  not  believe  that  to  be  one  of  them,  for  as  much  as  it  would  be  a  convenience.  "  He  comes  close,  then,  not  presumptuous  —— rather,  it’s  inviting,  gently  so,  a  hand  offered  for  the  other  to  take  and  be  drawn  close.  "  And  I  think  you,  "  he  teases,  softly,  fleetingly,  just  a  little  flirty  ——  "  Do  that  more  than  you  know  already.  "

i don't think i ever addressed this post-epilogue reveal, but i will say my canonical ending for this blog is gale surrendering the crown, and becoming a professor at blackstaff, with or without a romantic interest.

i do like to think everything that happened stirred a bit more of an adventurous spirit in him, though, and he's more apt to go on little adventures and excursions that are lower stakes than the end of the world.

note: i am not terribly interested in writing other endings ( god-gale, mostly ) currently !!

The  first  winter  has  descended  upon  them,  it  should  seem.  They  had  the  fortune  — if  one  could  call  it  that  — of  all  this  beginning  in  the  summer,  and  so  the  weather  has  held  and  the  days  have  been  pleasant.  Now,  however  — the  chill  has  settled  in,  and  there’s  even  a  few  wisps  of  snow  blowing  through  the  trees.  It’s  sticking  here  and  there,  ghosting  the  lands  'round  in  a  gentle  frost.

By  morning,  it  will  be  knee  deep,  no  doubt.  The  fire  is  burning  heartily  — in  part  by  diligent  tending  by  the  others,  in  part  by  a  keenly  sparked  cantrip  here  and  there  when  it  grows  low  — but  it  only  serves  to  keep  the  worst  chill  at  bay.

It's  something  that's  challenging  for  him,  he  thinks:  living  in  the  moment.  While  now  the  past  anchors,  it  was  once  the  future  that  was  just  as  binding  —  the  future  filled  with  promise  and  endless  possibility.  Possibility  that  was,  ultimately,  not  terribly  grounded,  truly,  but  possibility  regardless.
