Maybe he shouldnāt have told her how old Spider-Man was. She was probably kiddingāhopefully. Dating Spider-Man would definitely get her way too close to finding out his identity. He a soft, involuntary choking noise, and afterwards, he tried to smooth it over by clearing his throat. āYeah, um, dudeās pretty young.ā
āWell, you donāt have to worry about people hacking into the hospitals to find out about him. He rarely goes to the hospital. Just about the only times he ever goes is when heās knocked out and the emergency response teams take him.ā Aunt May and Peter couldnāt afford to pay that many hospital bills, so even if he really needed it, he often skipped out and hoped his slight healing factor would work its magic fast. āYou canāt actually see this, so many people donāt know itās one of his⦠uh, powers, but⦠he has this healing ability? He heals faster than an average human.ā
He hummed in thought. What else to tell her? āUm, he can do a full split?ā Peter found that out when he fell into one while trying to track down Sandman. āAnd⦠he used to be arachnophobic.ā
Peter blinked. "I have no idea what you just said, so I'm going to pretend you didn't say anything." He only knew bits and parts of a good handful of languages, and it didn't include Polish.
"I guess bullying is the word, yeah." Of course it was the word. He just had a habit of making things out to be a lot less significant than they actually were. He didn't like that his bullying problem actually got to him. It most certainly shaped a large portion of his personality, and he abhorred that. "And uh, it's not--it's not really that much of a problem anymore." He shrugged. Flash had pretty much stopped, but every now and then someone had it out for Peter. Most of the time, when he got punched at school nowadays, it was because he was defending someone else.
"Okay so, Spider-Man. Let's see... well, there's this one hotdog vendor that he always goes to next to the Dairy Queen and the Kohl's. He sits on the top and talks to the workers for hours. If you can't find him, that'd be a good place to look." They had some of New York's best hot dogs; he'd fight a man about that. "And um, the guy actually isn't twenty-something like a lot of people think. He's... around my age." He shot a quick, subtle glance at his bag. "You know what, um, what do you WANT to know about Spider-Man? Cause uh, I could ramble all day, but... let's just say... if you have a question about him, I probably know it."
He gawked at her for a moment. "Nope, can't fly. That was cool, though. I'll admit it." No matter how many mutants or super-people he's come across, everyone's individual abilities will never cease to intrigue him. "Though, you might wanna work on sticking the landing." Enjoying their snark fest, he did a backflip off the side of the roof and continued on his way.
They were getting really close to the point where they had met. It was still unknown to him if it was safe for either of them to be on ground level, so he stopped on a nearby rooftop. "How do you propose we go about this anyway?" He hung his head over the side of the building for a better look. "I'm thinkin' we might need to get closer to hear what everyone on the street is talking about. See if something's up. But uh, I don't know how close we SHOULD get, if you know what I mean."
"Cab it is!" he nodded. As long as his company was comfortable, he didn't care how they got there. He only wished that cabs were faster. "I'll meet you at the bottom of this building, kay? I'm guessing you probably don't want to get down MY way, so... the fire escape or the elevator inside are your options." He waved her a temporary goodbye and leaped off the side of the building.
At ground level, Peter leisurely hung off the side of a street lamp. The building they had landed on wasn't extremely tall, so the trip down shouldn't take her too long. Hopefully, she took the elevator. Short building or not, that was a lot of stairs.
// i've been reading the collected version of spider-verse all day and i love spider-woman and spider-gwen so much
"Well, I mean, you can, but I wouldn't have a clue as to what you're saying." He laughed and dropped the hug. He's glad she's gotten help.
"So um, you wanted to hear about the whole... glasses thing?" He knew she hadn't forgotten about it, so there was no point in trying to avoid the storyāno matter how much he wanted to. "Well, I um, got punched. In the face. A lot." His eyes shifted around, still attempting to elaborate the least amount possible. "Glasses and fists don't mix. Especially like... cheap glasses. I switched to contacts after my vision improved... exponentially, to say the least. I hardly need contacts or glasses now. I still like to wear glasses sometimes because... well, I get punched in the face a lot less now," when he wasn't being Spider-Man, that is, "and I like the weight of glasses. That probably sounds. Really weird. But I've worn them for so long. It's something you get kinda used to?" He readjusted his glasses. Yep, that sufficed for his not-actually-that-detailed explanation.
"I promised Spider-Man trivia. You ready for that?"
Nothing relieved him more for his friend than the fact that her aunt was locked up. He wondered how many of those seven years were left.
Peter looked down at the scars she made on herself and then back up at her. Not knowing any wise words to say in this situation, he pulled her into a full hug. It had been four years for her, and that was good. Peter just hoped she never did it again. He could be empathetic about that kind of thing. He's never physically hurt himself, but he's aware that he tends to beat himself up on the inside quite a lot. He wasn't sure if it was fair to compare the two things, so he felt a little guilty when his mind made the connection.
"Um," he kept her in a hug, "you can speak Polish?" He attempted to lighten the mood, "how come I didn't know about that? That's awesome."
āGet back! Iāve got soap, and Iām not afraid to use it.ā ((hello))
Steve looked at Peter, brows furrowing in confusion. He looked him up and down a moment before speaking.Ā

āOh I um, never take off the mask while working. So nobody recognizes me. Itās kinda weird too, because even my closest friends donāt recognize my voice.ā He continued working on getting the boxes out of the way. The truck was still toppled over, blocking out a good portion of the road. āGuess they just canāt believe that tiny olā me would be Spider-Man.ā He grinned under the mask.
āHey um, could you help me get this truck up on its wheels? I could probably do it myself, but I donāt wanna push it. Itād be better to play it safe and get help, y'know?ā
Wow, she was loud. "Hey, um, I dunno if you can hear this over your screaming, but can you please stop screaming? I'm gonna be deaf in this ear." It probably was a good time to let her down. Yeah.
He stopped on one of the many rooftops of New York City and released her from his grip. "'M sorry about that. Sometimes I forget that that can be a little scary for people that don't do it every day. Wanna take a cab instead? We're almost there; it'll just take a little longer than webs. I'll pay for it 'n all. I owe you for... scaring the crap outta you just then." His ear was ringing a little, and he's certain that he was talking a tad louder than normal. It'd wear off soon.
He winced when she described how she got burned. Peter was well aware of how painful burns were. It was his least favorite kind of injury. For lack of a better phrase, what she had to put up with was fucked up. Peter leaned in to his friend almost protectively out of instinct.
"No one said anything!?" He sounded surprised, but at the same time it wasn't surprising. It was just more appalling and disappointing than anything else. "God, I'm so sorry. That really... that really is shit. You deserve better." He wondered if the student who had clapped her in the back had noticed that she was hurt, but he didn't want to ask. The answer was probably obvious anyway; his hopes for humanity were probably a little too high.
Again, he found himself at a loss for words. He never was incredibly good at comforting people. He was just as lost as everyone else was in times of tragedy and suffering. "Your aunt... she's notāshe doesn't live anywhere near you now, right?" Peter's never met the woman and never wants to meet her. That lady should stay as far away from New York as possible for everyone's sake.
"Hey, whatever you say. I dunno what kind of powers you have, but if you're sure you don't need a cab." He kept up a sarcastic tone. She actually joined in on the banter. That was awesome.
"Like I said, I can manage. I put in a new web cartridge. Not running out this time. It's smooth sailing from here." And with that, he gave her a casual salute, shot a web, and swung across, landing on the next building.
"I bet I'm going toĀ beat you there!" Peter shouted at her from across the street, hoping she heard.
āGet back! Iāve got soap, and Iām not afraid to use it.ā ((hello))

"Oh. Well, um. Thank you for helping, sir. Even if you weren't doing anything important. It means a lot." He smiled politely, forgetting for a moment that he was wearing a mask. He had so many things he wanted to say to Steve. He looked up to him. "Um, y'know, I always wanted to know... since you're Captain America, how many people actually recognize you? Cause you're like. A celebrity. Kind of." Small talk was about all he was good for, being too nervous to tell the other how important he was to him.
He was positive that he was most certainly not the cutest, but he wasnāt going to argue with her any further. She seemed to be adamant on her opinion.
Peter intently listened to Kaziaās story, face painted with empathy when she got to the bad parts. He wasnāt quite sure what to say; it frustrated him that he couldnāt find many comforting words. It frustrated him that she had to go through that. Like he said before, Kaz was an incredibly good person at her core, and he didnāt think she deserved what she had been dealt. Nobody should have to go through that.
He frowned when she showed him her scar. āThatās⦠ouch.ā He considered faceplaming himself after that poetic comment. Something inside him boiled over the fact that she couldnāt remember getting that large scar.
He wrapped his good arm around Kaz in an attempt to be comforting. āYou really donāt have to continue if you donāt want to, but you know Iāll listen. Itās whatever you want to actually elaborate on. Um, cause⦠Whenever you tell someone about something you had to go through, you kinda have to⦠relive the moment. In a way. So. Uh, yeah,ā he exhaled a quiet laugh, āI guess venting is also good. Um. Wow, Iām sorry, Iām going to accidentally derail this whole conversation with⦠just ignore me. Continue only if you want to. Thatās what I mean.ā
āI donāt know what a speedster is, but it sounds really sci-fi. And cool.ā Jakku must be extremely far away from this planet. āI asked because weāre taking webs.ā He carefully grabbed her and shot one of his webs, whisking them both off. āSorry if I didnāt give you enough warning, I uh⦠this is the fastest I can travel without paying a cab.ā He raised his voice against the air moving quickly around them. āHey, weāre guaranteed to not run into any traffic this way, though. Thatās a plus.ā

"Hey, you don't have to be big to kick as--butt."
"I'm not cute!" he hid his face again, "You're making it worse; I can feel my face heating up just from this. This is the worst. No. Not cute."
He only moved his hands away when he knew his face wasn't red anymore. "Wherever you want to start, really. Just, whatever you feel comfortable telling me, ok?" He was certainly willing to listen to anything she wanted to tell him. The story could be hours long, he didn't mind. But if that happened, he couldn't promise he could stay awake that long. He'd sure try though. "Also, do you really want me to elaborate on the glasses thing after your story? It's kinda... sad, too. I guess. We'd be. Double sad."
