ummm okay but please don’t assume I know where this is going or anything. Takes place … a while after Rubies, long enough for Will to have grown his hair out a little more.
Will poured hollandaise sauce over the poached eggs and ham and licked the spoon clean — one more taste before he served it, just to be sure. It was good, and he was smiling as he took it out to the courtyard.
Hannibal rose to take the tray from him and kiss him. “It smells delicious. You’ve outdone yourself, my dear.”
He could’ve been reading off a script, but the feeling behind the words was real. It shone in his eyes and passed from his skin to Will’s with every touch. Hannibal untied Will’s apron for him and held his chair as he sat down.
It was only then that Will noticed the Canadian passport next to his place setting. “What’s this?”
Will opened it. When he saw the picture, the world stopped for a second. He remembered letting Hannibal take it. He’d put on the pale pink lip gloss he’d worn for their wedding and tried eyeliner for the first time. He’d combed his hair out around his face. Hannibal had told him he looked lovely, and that was how he had felt. He’d never thought of the photos again except to wonder if Hannibal still looked at them.
