reylo started off with a staunchly negative first interaction with two individuals with completely opposing world views, one of whom was a nazi. namor, while stern and clear about his demands, comes off as a neutral adversary with different methods but an almost identical goal with wakanda: protecting his people. already, shuri and namor have a lot in common, parallels are immediately drawn, and the audience has a very clear understanding of why namor wants to get rid of this scientist, he even explains it directly to us.
shuri and namor trying to find a middle ground before the death of ramonda can absolutely be read as romantic, so much so that to me it seems somewhat intentional. perhaps letitia and tenoch just had mad chemistry like that, but i noticed it immediately. the romantic chemistry between rey and kylo doesn’t feel solidified to me prior to the last jedi, perhaps in a hateful sense (which is more sexual tension imo), but you never get the sense that they would be romantically interested in each other before 8th episode (imo)
now, it’s arguable that the chemistry between shuri and namor is squashed because namor killed ramonda, but the potential continuation of that romance seems to be what drives ppl to compare this to reylo because suddenly namor is the evil bad guy, intentionally hurt the person he wanted to rule with, etc. but the major differences are: there was chemistry before ramonda died AND ramonda’s death canonically pushed shuri closer to agreeing with namor and he knows that! there’s hardly anything in the sequel narratives that gives rey motivation to turn to the dark side (besides vague curiosity) and it never shows her doing anything dark (besides trying to figure out what the dark side is about).
on the surface of these two relationships, they’re both enemies to lovers, but in reality, namor/shuri feels like it has a lot more depth and complexity that makes it a lot more interesting, tragic, and sensical than reylo is
Agree with this. No offense to the Reylo ship but that ship was carried heavily by Adam Driver. Rey as a character is super weak. So much potential with The Last Jedi but got snuffed out because of Rise of Skywalker.
Plus Shuri is a way better written character than Rey in ALL aspects.
If there is any kinda vague similarity with Namor+Shuri Im going to throw in Galadriel+Sauron here. Another ship where they became “friends” first. (Although Sauron knew she is hunting him down but humored her and stick with her. Only problem is there is no way a romance is gonna continue with Dark Lord+Elf.)
Ok but have we talked about the fact that Sauron must have fallen asleep WHILE HE WAS LOOKING AT GALADRIEL:
Galadriel's face is turned towards him as well, but his head position is unnatural for sleeping on one's back.
And that's not a coincidence because it looks the same in the concept art:
They were just throwing romantic trope after romantic trope at this pairing and then they have the gall to say they don't know why people are shipping them
