This is a very good question. If fact, you could swap in any number of genres there, like:

WHY is there all this magic trick art?

WHY is there all this hot springs art that was not in the hot springs episode?

(Eva had a hot springs episode, right? That was required by law in the 90s)

WHY is there all this badly drawn fetish porn of underage characters?

I'm kind of blowing a wad here, but none of these scans are big enough for me to clip out and focus on anything in particular. The answer to your question, which is already well-represented enough on this tumblr to have its own tag, is a very early attempt at whoring the Eva license called Shinji and Good Friends. Shinji and Good Friends was a set of PC puzzle and card games that had ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with Eva as such, except that it had insane artwork of Eva's characters all over it which is all stamped with GAINAX trademarks, which means I get to put them on my tumblr. I am pretty sure that is also the law.

I have no idea if these games still exist in any form (they were released for Windows 98), and I'm almost positive they weren't released outside of Japan, but ha ha when has that ever stopped anyone from playing bad porny 90s Japanese PC games.
