What do you think Janna's thoughts are on Marco and Jackie being a couple?
My guess would be that she doesn’t have any thoughts on the matter, but not in a good way.
Janna has always struck me as a rather smart and clever girl, but the thing about being smart is that it also means that one is better at deluding oneself. It seems to me that Janna just doesn’t want to even think about Marco and Jackie as a couple, and is doing a good job keeping herself from thinking about it.
Deleting a picture on another person’s phone is actually a rather intrusive and disrespectful thing to do. Though Janna has a reputation for being intrusive, her intrusions before this have always been directed at Marco, while her treatment of Star has always been as a good friend and with considerable respect. But in this case, Janna really does not want to think about it, and is willing to delete a picture on another person’s phone to keep things that way.
The Sad Janna Interpretation is that she has feelings for Marco and knows she has no chance with Marco against Jackie, and instead of letting herself feel bad about it she would rather not feel anything at all.
Yet even for those who insist that Janna has no romantic feelings for Marco, there is still a variant of the Sad Janna Interpretation for the whole matter. Even if her feelings for Marco are not romantic, she probably still has strong platonic feelings for Marco. There is much to suggest that Marco is special to her even if it is not in a romantic sense. In this case, Janna would consider Marco a close friend and know she will lose her close friend as he becomes closer with Jackie.
This should all sound similar to the debates over whether Star’s reactions to Marco and Jackie were due to jealousy or fear of losing her best friend. Janna is, in many ways, like a darker counterpart to Star. Her interactions with Marco are like a darker version of Star’s interactions, replacing the trust and confiding with stealing personal information breaking into lockers, replacing the hugs with bottom slaps. As @skleero and others have pointed out Janna could have been the heroine had the series been a different genre.
In light of this, it is so tragically easy to imagine Janna as a failed Star: someone who tried to get close with Marco, possibly for many years since childhood together, only to fail and lose out to a relative newcomer who suddenly appeared from another dimension and became Marco’s best friend with remarkable ease.
And Janna, as a failed, darker Star, would react in a different sort of way than Star to Marco and Jackie. While Star might obsess over Marco and Jackie and make herself miserable, Janna would do the smart thing and bury her feelings, romantic or platonic, and just not think about it.
And it’s working. Look how happy she is.
