Based on this information, I can only assume the top center drawing is Freija passed out after using all their goo to make a cute rabbit outfit, leaving them anemic and dazed.

Can people who have been exiled remember living in the City, or all those memories gone? Can they recognize someone who they once knew inside? Does it depend on the person?

ok funnily i did think of that same thing

and exiles generally have extremely vague piecemeal memories of the inside, like barely remembered dreams producing glimpses in vague snapshots.

there are lifts built into the wall at a number of locations, occasionally opening to reveal new exiles heaped on the floor, unconscious or dead. lift-tenders take it upon themselves to live in shacks constructed around the lift doors (often set high up in the face of the wall, implying there was once architecture meant to receive them even before the shacks and scaffolding). the lift-tenders wait and care for new exiles (who can be of any age from children to the elderly) during a grace period in which they try to nurse any wounds/ailments and teach them fundamental aspects of living outside. after this, prospective guilds and employers and so on have a chance to take in desired individuals.

those who aren't wanted by anyone (such as Freija) are left to the mercy of the streets and the slavers, organ harvesters, and other unpleasant parties prowling about.

there are of course a number of glaring issues in this system.

also, notably, no one has succeeded in getting the lift to take anyone into City. they seem to possess sensors and refuse to budge until completely emptied.

this also leaves a great deal of speculation as to the nature of City--walled off for over a millennium--and its society, most of it not very good, though it remains entirely a mystery. despite this, many believe it to be some grand utopia or even a strange afterlife.
