“Really? Cause you look shorter than the last time I saw you.”
“Ohh,” Wendy reacted, almost offended she had been called short. “So just because you’re tall, you get to talk to me that way? Sorry not everyone can be a mountain, Daniel.”
“Oh. S-so sorry. I thought I was alone. I didn’t mean to disturb you.” She smiled apologetically, backing away and settling back to her place behind the tree.
“Nah, it’s alright,” Wendy brushed off,”You were actually rapping to the beat of this game I’m playing, and honestly I’m just glad you’re not butchering Nicki Minaj’s rap.”
The blonde girl was sitting down outside reading a magazine she had recently bought. Happy to have some time too herself she was started out of her peaceful moment when she heard a voice. Looking up from her magazine apology was written over her face. “I’m sorry but I got absolutely none of that can you repeat it?”
“Sir -- sir! Excuse me! You left your --” Wendy called out as she tried chasing the man who just left the restaurant to no avail, “--phone.” Taking a moment to catch her breath, she decided to head back to the restaurant instead. “If you don’t want it back then fine,” she mumbled to herself, intending to maybe check for any emergency contacts on the phone. What she didn’t intend to do was be overheard, which unfortunately happened with a by-stander. “Oh, sorry -- I wasn’t talking to you. I was trying to catch up with some guy who left his phone.”
“See, you were wrong and honestly, when are people gonna stay woke on electronic music? In my defense, they’re both a part of pop culture now so people must have at least know them by name or by song. I don’t like club music, I love it. And for the record, we call it electronic dance music.”
“I was not wrong,” Wendy corrected, “I made a mistake because both DJs decide to use a freaking X in their names that it’s inevitable to switch their names in the same sentence.” There should be a part in Wendy that knew better than to pick an argument with her friend over something as petty as music. Unfortunately, it didn't exist. "Well, people have to be woke to stay woke. And if electronic dance music isn't their jam, you can't force them to love it as much as you do. You just have to accept that neither DJs have made as big a mark on people or pop culture as you've expected."

She rapped, thinking she was alone on her spot under the tree by the park. But she was so wrong.
“Excuse me,” Wendy butted in. “I thought you should know you’re rapping out loud -- not that I have a problem with that,” Wendy pointed out, “But I don’t know if you intended this to be a quiet, internal thing.”
hi guys! i just got home from celebrating my cousin’s birthday so i’ll just clean myself up before being around for replies and plots. if we haven’t plotted or are in the middle of doing so, hmu. also if you have a starter you want me to reply to, just like this and i’ll search the tags :)
“To the ears of those who hasn’t been long in the music industry, it is. But Skrillex has some iconic beats of his own. That’s true but some people just don’t know them at all. I’m so frustrated at them.”
At April’s reply, Wendy realized her flub and quickly corrected herself. “Shit, I meant Skrillex has more iconic beats than Garrix. Case in point, Skrillex practically resurrected the pariah that was Justin Bieber and his career. And it’s a tall order to expect everyone to know who they are, April. Some people just don’t like club music as much as you do.”
“When do you need it by?” Reagan asked the other as she lent forward on her elbows, smiling lightly. She was already in a runt and her to-do list grew by the second, but how could she say no to a face like that. “Not that I’m in a rush-” The redhead quickly interjected, her eyes growing wide before pulling back, “I just want to make sure this painting is in top quality for you, that’s all.”
“Aw, thank you,” Wendy told the girl, giving her a rare, genuine smile. “Does two weeks count as a rush? I’m in charge of giving Christmas presents this year for our business, and we have one partner who really appreciates art and self-portraits.”
“Kinda have to partly agree and disagree. Sure, Skrillex has more recognizeable beats but Martin Garrix too, has a few recognizable beats. But they’re both amazing and I’m glad that you actually know them.”
“Yeah, but were Garrix’s beats more iconic than Skrillex’s though?” Wendy pointed out, “And of course I know who they are -- you don’t hesitate to name drop them whenever you hear their beats drop.”
He slumped in defeat and disappointment as his friend mentioned getting the same delicacy from another seller. “Wendy,” he whined, brows knitted together in frustration. “That’s not fair. Way to help a friend.”
Wendy had to backtrack for a second, slightly perplexed that he missed her joke. “You do know I was talking about your mom, right?” she clarified.
“C’mon, ma’am— okay, okay, I’ll give it to you, three packs for one hundred pesos.” He struggled to carry his small basket of masareal as he followed the woman, who was visibly trying to ignore him despite his efforts. He had just gotten off work, the sun setting low on the horizon and tourists already heading back to their hotels. He took the opportunity and ran with it. “It’ll be good to support your local businesses, and you won’t find these in your Island Souvenirs or whatever new shop just opened up. They’re really good! I- ma’am? Ma’am!” He sighed in exasperation as the woman quickened her pace, walking further and further away from him. “Kaluya man san ako business.” He chuckled to himself, a short, fleeting thought if anything, before he saw another potential customer. “What about you? You wanna buy some masareal?”
Wendy had to stifle a chuckle as she watched Kreiger try and fail to make a sale. It’s the tourist’s loss though because the masareal his mom makes were delicious. As soon as the tourist fled, Wendy approached her friend, only for him to turn around and offer her some of the nutty goods. She gave him a smile, before she pretended to consider his offer. “Hm, I don’t know -- I already get them for free from this really nice lady, and she makes really good masareal.”
“Just for science, which do you think is better skrillex or martin garrix?”
Some science, Wendy quietly thought to herself as she pondered on the question regardless. “I prefer Martin Garrix because his style is less intense than Skrillex, but Skrillex pumps out more recognizable beats.
wendy is half-chinese, half-white. her paternal grandparents migrated from china to the philippines in the 60s and started their own restaurant in cebu.
her dad went to canada for college and eventually worked as a stock broker. it was there he eventually met and married her mom, who was a photographer.
wendy was born in canada, but her entire family moved back to cebu when she was seven in order for her dad to help with the family restaurant.
in school and among family, she sort of felt left out because she felt like she was never fully anything -- not chinese enough, not white enough, not filipino enough. surviving through school built up her FIGHT ME attitude.
despite getting into trouble for fighting kids, wendy’s intelligent, enough for her to gain scholarships in the country’s big universities and pass for ones outside the country.
her dream was to take biology in the national university of singapore, and though her family was supportive, money had been tight due to the restaurant going under renovations. she ended up studying in UP instead.
before she could even begin finding a job after college however, her parents roped her in to working in the family business, something she is incredibly bitter about.
PERSONALITY
wendy is ambitious -- she knows what she’s capable of and what she wants in life. she’s willing to put in the work, so it incredibly frustrates her that her family isn’t supportive of her to achieve her dreams. as much as she wishes she could just defy her family, she actually doesn’t have the heart to do so because family is #1 in her heart.
she has a tendency to be mean and sarcastic, mostly because it’s her instinct after putting up with years of bullying. she isn’t exactly a ray of sunshine either because she sees herself as being cooped up in cebu.
underneath the roughness, wendy i think is just a little broken and beaten down because she doesn’t fit in anywhere, and where she hopes she could carve her own path, she doesn’t get the chance to explore it because of family obligations. she just wants to travel, see the world and study it, hoping to make it a better place, but she’s loyal to her family to rebel against them.
