We’ve got songs we’ll be playing from all different areas of my life, all different things, all different times and memories. Some of these songs are about my life, some are about fictional characters I created, but my hope is that at the end of the day is that these are songs you think are about your life, and that you feel genuinely are about your life, and the song we’re going to play next, well, its just a love song, you know?”

Taylor Swift Carefully Reimagines Her Past on 'Fearless: Taylor's Version'

This re-recording of her breakthrough 2008 album is at points even more moving than the original.

“I lived, and I learned,” Taylor Swift sings 85 minutes into the expanded, rerecorded version of her breakthrough 2008 album, Fearless. Less than two years ago, Swift announced she’d be redoing her back catalog to reclaim ownership of her early material after the master recordings of her Big Machine discography were acquired by industry mogul Scooter Braun. The goal of this ambitious undertaking is plain enough. To borrow a phrase from “Tim McGraw”:  When you think Fearless, Swift hopes you think “Taylor’s Version.”

Musicians rerecording their back catalog following behind-the-scenes label disputes is an age-old music industry story. But there is little precedent for an artist undertaking the endeavor in as high-profile a manner as Swift, who has leapt into this project with the big-budget ambition and creative fervor usually reserved for a blockbuster album. In doing so, she’s positioned unromantic industry pragmatism as a retrospective celebration of her creative life: part die-hard fan treat, part legacy-artist archival reissue — think: The Bootleg Series (Taylor’s Version) — and part told-you-so pet project.

“‘Don’t You’ is a song that I wrote with Tommy Lee James, who is a fantastic writer. We wrote it about the idea of seeing someone at you used to have a thing for, and seeing them out in public for the first time after you’ve heard that they’ve moved on and that, you know, your life is kind of in shambles, and they have moved on and they’re really happy. And it’s almost like, even them being nice to you hurts you, because you’re like in such a state of pain and you haven’t moved on yet. So that was a really fun song to write because that’s just a wellspring of emotion to draw from, and Jack Antonoff produced it, and I think he did a really, really beautiful job of kind of highlighting sort of the melody and letting it just be really airy and sort of like a dreamscape.”
