I’ve been reading a lot of Stephen King and, while I do agree with a lot of criticisms about him/his work, what really strikes me about his stories is just how sad a lot of his monsters are.

Carrie? An awkward, sheltered kid who was abused by her mother and the kids at school and simply had enough of it.

Cujo? A former gentle giant of a dog who was simply unfortunate enough to be infected by a rabid bat.

Gage from Pet Sematary? A toddler who died in a horrible accident and was brought back as a monster by the father who couldn’t cope with his death.

*points* I’ve been saying this for forever. The tragedy and horror of it is none of these characters are made monsters by their own doing. None of them. It’s the concept someone could hurt you and you’d be the ‘monster’ in the end. Stephen isn’t a perfect writer but that concept resonates.
