So I won’t put words in Taylor’s mouth but this is what I got out of secret sessions when she explained it (cause otherwise I wouldn’t have gotten it either tbh)

She opened that analysis with “there’s a reason I don’t have parties for the Fourth of July anymore” lol

This country has a weird thing with being obsessed with high school and Friday night football and blind patriotism… She tried to explain it to her friends in London and they didn’t understand what she was trying to say when she said they had a whole thing for homecoming and all that in high school. Americans are taught to have a blind patriotism but that’s not really comforting when there’s a lot going on in our country. So like in the state of everything right now, you kind of have to find that one person who will just sit under the bleachers with you during the football game everyone is obsessed with and wait it out and getaway from everything with. She wanted to make this song like a huge metaphor
