Central, South ready to resume Westerville rivalry
After a two-year hiatus, Westerville Central and Westerville South will resume their rivalry with both teams coming off Week 1 wins that had far different endings. The Wildcats controlled play for most of a 30-7 win Aug. 19 over Olentangy in a game played at Westerville North as a field-renovation project at South was nearing completion. Meanwhile, Central pulled off a hook-and-lateral for a touchdown on the final play to beat North 23-20 win.

Westerville Central’s long winning streak in its series against Westerville North, which resumes Aug. 19 at Central, isn’t something that’s on the mind of first-year Warhawks coach Ed Miley. Central has beaten the Warriors in 12 consecutive games — including 14-7 a year ago — since the Warriors won the first matchup in 2008.

Moments after the Westerville North baseball team won its first district championship in 34 years, Aiden Dickinson thought about the Warriors’ time inside the school as well as their efforts on the field.
“It’s just something we’ve dreamed of. We’ve brought it up in classroom sessions,” said Dickinson, a junior second baseman and pitcher. “We have a board where we write our goals, and this is the latest one we had to check off. (My teammates) have helped me all the way through.”

“I went back and forth on it, I just labored on it for a long time and had discussions with the people I love,” he said April 29. “It was a tremendously difficult decision because it’s been part of my life for so long. I enjoyed it so much, but there are reasons, obviously. I thought it would be a decent time because there’s a lot here still.”

He loves the sport, but saying it was time for a change, Crooks has stepped down as coach of the Wildcats, ending his second tenure with the program. “I thought about it all year long,” he said. “The main reason is I just can’t get kids. I just have to step away and hopefully the next group can get some kids and get things going again. You want people there, you want to do well and you want to have a good team and I just couldn’t get it together. That’s the bottom line.”

As the Westerville South softball team continues to battle injuries, senior Kayti Williams has filled in at multiple positions and provided leadership while also leading the Wildcats offensively.
“I know a lot of the younger girls really just want to play, so I’m not necessarily taking them under my wings, but I’m definitely giving them all the advice and knowledge I know,” Williams said. “I like that challenge. I want to see all these girls succeed.”
