What Went Right, and What It Got Wrong
Mercury Is in Retrograde
Frida Kahlo identified particularly with the culture and clothing of the women of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in Oaxaca, Mexico. This video, made by the Mexican government to promote its culture and customs abroad, features the vibrant dress that Tehuana women are known for including the richly embroidered huipiles (tunics), floor-length enaguas (skirts), and starched resplandors that Kahlo incorporated into her own style and art. Kahlo’s choice to don Indigenous clothing was motivated by political, personal, and artistic considerations. Dressed as a Tehuana, she affirmed her identification with Mexico and its artistic legacies. #FridaKahloBKM
