"It appears that our dear friend here has decided to drown his senses in liquor the night before the first meetingâŠ" France said, yanking England back and spinning him around to face America... (cut)
America almost panicked when he had an armful of Englandâhis body wasnât expecting the direct contact and it made him momentarily dizzy with the blood rushing to his face. But once he got a hold of himself, he held the drunk nation securely against him. His face was still bright red.
"England," he whispered, glancing around the lobby and spotting onlookers at their comical displayâa drunk man clinging to his buddy at only eight-thirty in the evening. "I donât know what made you drink this much, but youâll definitely regret this in the morning."
Slinging Englandâs arm over his shoulder, America made his way to the elevator. He placed one hand on Englandâs hipâonly to support him, of course. His fingers felt the noticeable jut of the drunk Nationâs hip that America quickly slid his hand upwards to hold Englandâs waist instead.Â
They started walking to the elevators. He didnât want to think about Englandâs jutting hips, or how the shorter nationâs body was pressing nicely against him.
It took England a moment to realize that he was being led away from the bar and the nation cast the area a glance, wanting to protest but too inebriated to truly manage it, "I didn' wanna stop--" He began, but then he suddenly realized who it was that was holding him and a surge of envy washed through him as he realized that the warmth at his side was very much claimed by another nation who had been deemed more worthy than him.
"Aren' you s'pposed t' be with Japan?" He said acidically, but then there was a strange crack in his voice that he really wanted to deny had ever even been there.
Nonetheless, he didn't push the other nation away. Just because he couldn't have him, it didn't mean that he couldn't at least enjoy this brief moment of contact.
Completely drunk, he leaned heavily against him, indulging in the warmth. America smelled faintly of sweat and something deeper. "Mmn..."

As Arthur sank into the cool, familiar ocean, he looked up at the human, feeling mildly perplexed... (cut)
Alfred smiled as he watched the merman swim towards the deep sea, and finally losing sight of him as the sun rose. His water-soaked sweatpants were making him cold so he quickly walked back to dry sand. Now that Arthur was gone, all of it seemed surreal. Yet he just kept on reminding himself that they would meet again tomorrow. Â Alfred thought perhaps he should bring something that would intrigue and interest Arthur, that way they would have a lot to talk about and also distract Arthur on criticizing him further. With that final thought, he decided to go home and change, it was far too late in the morning and he needed to get to his job.Â
Alfred sat in his lifeguard chair, thankful to the umbrella above him as it sheltered him from the scorching summer heat. There were a lot of people in the beach today so he kept his guard up for anyone drowning. His binoculars scanned the whole beach right to left and back for anyone in distress, though the occasional blonde head always made his heart race. He was unusually eager for the day to pass, wishing the next morning would come sooner so he can talk with his new merman friend again.Â
The rest of the day had Arthur searching for the perfect gift for the human whom had so thoughtfully saved him. Even if it wasn't necessary, the merman wanted to repay him if only because the idea of debt was unsettling to him. He didn't like owing anyone-- let alone a human.
It took him a long time but, eventually, he found the perfect item.
The next morning he swam up near the shore around dawn, searching for the familiar figure with blond hair.
Alfred laughed, forgetting all about Ivan for a minute. "It's not an all-Omega class, Arthur. It's an elective, at the beginning of the semester we chose between Home Ec and Computer Science. I guess there was only room in one of them, so you didn't get a chance to choose. You'll be with me, though. I'll finally have someone to pair up with."
"You chose home economics?" Arthur said, tilting his head slightly. It seemed an odd idea when Alfred had just explained that he had had other options.
Mostly Arthur was trying to distract himself from the fact that his skills--or lack thereof--would not exactly be appreciated in a class that had days dedicated solely to the culinary arts...
"You're still new, they'll go easy on ya." He said with a forced smile and a shrug. "What classes do you have left? Maybe we have one or two together." The Omega added hopefully, then took a bite of toast, getting Nutella and crumbs all over his mouth. Not that he cared, he already looked like a hot mess, with a black eye, a broken arm, and a backpack that still smelled faintly of garbage, even after half a bottle of Febreze.
"Let me see..." Arthur pulled a slip of paper out of his pocket. "I appear to have... economics, physical education, and..." He wrinkled his nose, "home economics? That can't be right..." That was an Omega class.
He frowned. "I suppose I'll visit the office before homeroom to see if I can't get that sorted out."
The French nation hummed pleasantly, âGood evening, lâAmerique.â... (cut)
At that, America stood up straighter. England was with France? He felt his heart clenched for a split-second, but it was enough to make him breathless. âYeah, sure. Iâm coming down.â He then pressed the end button.
The tall nation turned to Japan and with an apologetic smile, he said, âI have to goâFrance just called me to say that Englandâs with him and needs my help. I donât know what kind of help that is, but yeah. Have to make sure heâs all right.â
He knelt beside Japan and clapped his shoulder. âKiku, I would need lots of your help in making England like me just a little bit more,â he asked, a little embarrassed by the admission. And then, âThanks, bud.â America grinned, and he added, âIâll just leave the consoles here! See you, Kiku!â
As he made his way to the lobby, he spotted France trying to restrain an obviously drunk England as the shorter nation made a ruckus.
"France?" America looked at the sober nation, silently asking what happened to England.
"It appears that our dear friend here has decided to drown his senses in liquor the night before the first meeting..." France said, yanking England back and spinning him around to face America.
England peered up at the taller nation with something akin to surprise, but it didn't last very long as, suddenly, he was pitched forward into America's arms by an eager France.
"Help him get back to your room, will you?" The Frenchman said, fleeing the scene before America could even answer him.
Alfred grinned and waved when he saw Arthur. "Yeah. Really well, actually. How 'bout you?"
Across the cafeteria, Ivan glared at the couple possessively. Alfred had been promised to him since birth, and now some other Alpha was going to step in when he only had two more months left to wait, and steal his mate? No, he'd have to make it clear who the Omega belonged to, and soon.
Alfred noticed Ivan's stare and gulped slightly, but did his best to hide his fears from Arthur. If he knew how possessive Ivan was, he wouldn't even think about coming near Alfred.
Arthur rolled his shoulders in a short shrug. "I slept well enough." He said easily, delicately lifting his tea to his lips and blowing air over the steaming cup. He sighed. "I have yet to attend the second half of my classes. This may be a rather tiring day for me." He admitted, some humor in his voice as he took his first sip of caffeine.
It was a little over an hour later that France decided that England had probably had enough, mostly because the man was making a show of trying to fight him at the bar... (cut)
"Oh shit, oh shit, Iâm gonna loseâFUCK!"Â America exclaimed, gripping the controller tight against his chest as a monster that looked as real as his modern horror movies came and ate his character.
He sneaked a glance at Japan, who had this impassive look on his face as he flawlessly controlled his character. He had to wait for his character to respawn and he slid just a little closer to the Asian nationâof course to keep him company and to not let monsters come closer to him, thatâs all.
The room was filled with screams and shrill noises, all coming from the game they were playing when a different noise began joining the shrieking contest. The tall nation yelped and almost clung to Japan when he realized that it was his phone that was ringing.
Sheepishly smiling at his friend, America took his phone out and glanced at the screen. Unusual for France to call him, he thought, and he vaguely noticed Japan muting their game. Nodding his thanks to the other nation, America finally answered the call.
"Yeah, France?"
The French nation hummed pleasantly, "Good evening, l'Amerique." He greeted warmly, watching England drape himself over the bar, oblivious to the phone call. "You are rooming with l'Angleterre, non? It seems he is a little... indisposed, if you would, and needs some, ah... help getting back to his room. Might you be so kind as to come down to the hotel lobby and pick him up?"
Alfred was there first, though, knowing all the shortcuts since he'd been at the school for so long. He went through the line and filled his plate (scrambled eggs with cheese, three strips of bacon, and toast with Nutella) before taking a seat at one of the dining hall's smaller tables, which seated four. He sipped his iced coffee as he scanned the room for Arthur.
When Arthur arrived, he ended up with a small plate containing buttered toast and a breakfast pastry along with a steaming cup of earl grey. It didn't take him long to spot the Omega and so he made his way over, feeling dissatisfied for showing up later but smothering that feeling back as he sat down.
Looking at Alfred, he offered something of a fond smile. "Sleep well?"
Japan looked up at the other nation slowly, very carefully regarding this question for a moment... (cut)
Americaâs head quickly snapped up, his eyes almost unbelieving. âReally?â Hope was rising in his chest. Japan knew things he didnât. He trusted Japanâheâs the only one he could be honest and open with his feelings.
America felt himself smile. "Thanks. Thatâs a relief to hear." At least this time he would try to see if England was really âpassionateâ about him. And maybe, just maybe, he wouldnât have to stay too long in Japanâs room. Maybe he could invite England for a chat or a drink sometime soon.
Feeling hopeful and lighter than before, America picked up the consoles and handed one to Japan.Â
It was a little over an hour later that France decided that England had probably had enough, mostly because the man was making a show of trying to fight him at the bar.
And by 'fight', he meant lightly hitting him before getting teary-eyed and saying this or that about America as he bawled his eyes out.
With a sigh, France flipped open his cell phone, being unable to figure out from the Englishman himself where his room was. Additionally, it looked like the man didn't even have his key card on him.
Mon dieu.
Tapping through his contacts, he pressed down on America's name and held the phone up to his ear as the call started to go through.
Even with a broken wrist, Alfred slept better than he had in months. Dreams and images of Arthur filled his mind, keeping a faint smile on his face all night long. And when his alarm woke him, he wasn't cranky and overtired, but excited, since morning meant another day with his Alpha. Of course, he'd never admit to such sappy and cliché feelings aloud, but he didn't have to, they were written all over his face as he dressed and made his way to the dining hall.
Arthur didn't exactly sleep as peacefully as Alfred had, but the gnawing sort of anxiety he expected to feel for being truant half the previous day never came to him, instead replaced by a soft contentment that made him feel at ease. That, in and of itself, was unusual for him, but as he dressed in his uniform, he felt a giddy jump in his heart at the idea of meeting the Omega for breakfast, and so he was quick to leave the Alpha dorms, hoping to arrive before Alfred did.

Arthur let his hand be shaken, confused, cocking his head at the simple motion with a frown... (cut)
Alfred rubbed his temples and let go a small sigh. I thought mermaids and mermen were supposed to have beautiful voices, but this oneâs just giving me a headache. After Arthur finished his rant, Alfred stood up and easily scooped Arthur in his arms. âYou know, if you just wanted to be put back in the water, you can just say so. But you do have a point, you may not think Iâm your hero, but believe me when I say I only have good intentions.â Alfred gave Arthur his brightest smile, thinking maybe the merman just wasnât good with expressing himself.Â
He felt his sweatpants become heavier as the water soaked through it up to his thighs. He gently lay Arthur down hoping it was deep enough for the other to swim in and go wherever he needed to be. But before removed his arms he couldnât help but ask, âHey, I know I said I wouldnât ask payment⊠But I was wondering if I could see you again. I always pass by here during my morning run, so maybe we can meet here if you like, maybe tomorrow? Or whenever youâre free. Iâll always be here, same time.â He let go of Arthur, bringing his arms back to his side.Â
He wouldnât blame the other if he just swam away right then and there and never see each other again, but he hoped Arthur would reconsider his offer. Because for some reason, Alfred didnât want this to be just another  crazy dream.
As Arthur sank into the cool, familiar ocean, he looked up at the human, feeling mildly perplexed. Somehow, he hadn't expected the man to release him so easily, suspecting him to have some sort of ulterior motive. It was not unheard of for the humans to demand tribute for the act of saving a merman or maid and, despite what he had said earlier, Arthur suddenly felt rude and guilty for not promising some sort of payment. He was grateful, truly, but he had let his agitation flow freely, bitter, biting words all that had left his lips up until this point.
So it was with some sincerity that he looked at Alfred and said, "I will be here tomorrow, then."
And with that he dipped down into the water with not so much as a splash, darting away into the expanse of the sea, cuts stinging in the murky salt.
He had to find the perfect gift for the human who had just saved his life.

The merman snuffed indignantly. âI have never heard of a âheroâ before.â... (cut)
Even though Alfred could see they were different, the thought of how different they were exactly hadnât sunk in yet, not until Arthur mentioned he didnât know what a hero was. It was just so easy to forget when Alfred focused more on the mermanâs upper half than his lower fish half. âLetâs just say a hero is a really really good person.â He hoped that was simple enough.Â
He watched amusingly as Arthur seemed lost on what to do with his hand and finally took pity on the poor thing. âHere.â Alfred positioned their hands correctly and gave it a firm shake. âYouâre welcome.â He felt the webbing between Arthurâs fingers and used his other hand to feel the texture, smooth and moist. âSo what happened to you? How did you get stuck in that net?â
Arthur let his hand be shaken, confused, cocking his head at the simple motion with a frown. It seemed very strange to do this, all things considered, and he was fairly relieved when it was over, massaging the hand with his other.
"Isn't calling yourself a really, really good person a little presumptuous?" Arthur pointed out, hell bent on being difficult. "How are you a good person? To whom? For what reason? It's all relative, isn't it? Perhaps you save me--and that makes you a good person--but then this would not continue to be so if you brought me further ashore or, say, kept me out on the sand instead of putting me back in the ocean..." His scales were beginning to dry out and it itched like crazy. "And perhaps bringing me ashore made you a good person to others as that would benefit them. Perhaps you are a hero, but the real question is: are you a hero to me?" He peered up at him with faintly glowing eyes, the irises shimmering a supernatural shade of green.
"And it matters not how I became trapped in that net, for I am now free."
"I think it's pretty cool, I mean, not everyone gets fireworks on their birthday." He grinned as he listened to Arthur, picturing the two of them going to parties in couples costumes, cuddling while they watched scary movies, getting lost in corn mazes...
"Oh, yeah." His gaze fell to the sidewalk as his grin faded, and they walked up to the door in silence. "I'll look for you at breakfast." He murmured, and after a moment's indecision, looked up once again and pressed their lips together for a brief, sweet kiss, then pulled away and disappeared inside the dormitory before he could be mocked for doing so.
Arthur stared after the Omega for a long moment, finally exhaling a laugh as he shook his head and murmured to himself, "Isn't that supposed to be my role?" He gave the door one last fond smile before turning and starting back for his dorm.
There were many things that Arthur had thought he would experience on the first day of class, but...
Getting into a fight, skipping half of his classes, going on a pseudo-date, and agreeing to become someone's mate had not been on that list.
Somehow, he didn't mind any of it.
Life suddenly seemed to have a lot more color.
America seemed quite intent on not discussing the issue, so Japan politely let him have that wish, handing him the game... (cut)
"Woah, you got it pretty lucky here, Kiku! We can totally play as much as we want!" America grinned at him, his pearly white teeth showing. "Awesome," he exclaimed, standing up as he took the game and look at the cover and then read the synopsis at the back. Grabbing his bag, he took out the appropriate console and immediately went to set up the system.
As America worked out the AV cables to connect to the TV, he wondered what England was doing right now. He could be unpacking his suitcase. The old man did pack a lot this time, he thought fondly. A frown came to his features as he remembered that England wasnât happy rooming with him.
When he finished plugging the last of the cables, he stayed still for a moment and then spoke, âSay, Kiku.â He paused again, trying to find the right words to deliver the question plaguing his mind for quite some time already.
"Do you really think England hates me?" he finally asked in a small voice. It was obvious that he was affected of how England had treated him more than he let on. Liking a person who hated him was tough.
Japan looked up at the other nation slowly, very carefully regarding this question for a moment. And then, "No. I believe England-san is the type to ignore that which he truly hates." It was a profoundly presumptuous statement, but it was what Japan felt to be most accurate. "From what I have observed, he is quite passionate about you in particular, so, no, I do not think that he feels hatred for you."
While this was a bit more direct than he was usually comfortable with being, the conclusion was left open for America to draw for himself.
Japan stared at the other nation for a long moment, calculatingly, before he turned back to his own suitcase and very carefully extracted from it what was obviously a new game... (cut)
Americaâs face quickly brightened upon seeing the unfamiliar cover, his hand already reaching out to take it. He briefly wondered why Japan didnât give the game to him immediatelyâ
His gaze shot up to Japanâs upon hearing his question, eyes widening for a moment before he deflated. âWhenever I sneak a glance at him, he always has this angry look on his face, as if my mere presence in our room has offended him greatly,â America shrugged, looking down as he fiddled with his thumbs.
He looked back and grinned weakly at Japan. âSo yeah, thatâs why Iâm here. Hope your roommateâs okay with us playing loudly?â
America seemed quite intent on not discussing the issue, so Japan politely let him have that wish, handing him the game. "It is a new horror simulation I have developed." He said, a very subtle gleam in his eye. "It is based on your more western tastes. I thought, maybe if my creatures were too cute, I could try my hand at recreating yours. I would like your opinion on it."
And then he hesitated, looking at the single bed in the room. "I was roomed alone. It seems to have been a mistake, but the hotel staff has apologized. They refused to let me pay the appropriate price." Japan looked uneasy at the refusal of his money however, frowning only just, but it passed as quickly as it had come. "Although I suppose that is... fortunate for you." A very slight smile. "You may stay as long as you would like."
.
"Are you sure you want to drink this much, l'Angleterre? This seems a little excessive, even by your standards..."
"I thou' I tol' y' t' sod off!"

"Why would it be temporary? That would be a silly waste of such powerful magic." Arthur quipped, shifting uncomfortably on the damp sand... (cut)
Alfred rolled his eyes at Arthurâs cynicism, though a smile could still be seen on his lips. âI donât want anything in return okay? A hero doesnât help people to get recognition or awards, a hero helps people because itâs the right thing to do.â He puffed out his chest proudly. âThough I would appreciate it if you shake my hand. Letâs try this again. Itâs a pleasure to meet you, Arthur.â He beamed at the merman, knowing the other would have no choice but to comply.
The merman snuffed indignantly. "I have never heard of a 'hero' before." Was it some new type of creature? It seemed a bit excessively noble to be a new race of some sort and this Alfred looked suspiciously human if he was one. Was he lying? It was very much like humans to lie, after all...
"I, um..." Arthur frowned openly at him for a long second, uncomprehendingly, and then, slowly, he extended his own hand, placing it on the human's. "Like this?"
