Beware potential Etsy scam!
I received an email asking if I had something in stock: this is weird! Normally I wouldn’t respond to something like this, but it wasn’t MY item and I wanted to know how they got my email. I found the item they inquired about on Etsy, and the shop name is the same as my shop email address. My shop’s named after me, so it’s not an unlikely coincidence there’s another out there.
Assuming Betty is just confused and possibly elderly, I reply back about how that’s not my shop, but I understand the confusion. I politely explained that she can chat with the seller on Etsy directly, and sent a link leading back to the correct shop.
IMMEDIATELY I get a “you made a sale!” Email with a link, instructions for shipping, Etsy logo, all that good stuff. I’m trying to be kind to what I suspect could be a scam and decide MIGHT be someone genuinely confused, decide to do the nice thing, and am rewarded with whatever the hell that link led to! I am TIRED.
And I genuinely wonder- Is anyone actually getting anywhere by scamming artists? Like the only thing most of us have to lose is intellectual property, and that’s not even safe if you want to have a platform. Especially on sites like Etsy.
I tried looking up Etsy alternatives, but not knowing about them as an artist almost certainly makes the consumer base much, much smaller. Especially for things like stickers and prints. The sites that host and distribute for you take entirely too much profit, and it’s so difficult to build your own platform in an economy built on attention and scarcity. I’m not saying it’s not worth trying, but the whole thing is so disheartening. Being an artist is really, really hard right now. More exhausted and inspired than ever 👍
this wasn't a particularly good rant and I dont WANT to bring attention to it, but flagged mature?? I guess I said what the hell but y'all say fuck every other word and thats cool? Thanks tumblr lol
