Ok, I know this has been going round some time. So I thought why not add more fuel to fire.
Asa and Anthony will never be Aziraphale and Crowley.
" Ohh but Anthony who is a professor who loves astronomy and Asa who gives around saying tickety boo and loves boo. They are literally their essence-"
Let me stop you right there and elaborate.
The entire point of og good omens is that it is not who you are or your past that defines you but what you choose. I could go around psychoanalysing everything but I will just give you one big example
Adam
He was the essence of evil, bought to earth to end it. He was the son of Satan ,sought out to destroy everything. But he grew up as a normal kid and wanted to go back to that. And his choice is what defined him. He was not good,no , but he was not evil either. He was just a kid who likes to play with his friends ,loves his family and wanted a dog.
And no occult forces,no soul of his was the reason of Armageddont .
And that is the exact reason why Asa and Anthony will never be Aziraphale and Crowley. They both never had to spend 6000 years circling around each other. Never had to go through various years, forming an "us". They both never had a choice to form the Arrangement, and go around justifying to themselves the reason for it. They never saw humans starting from nothing and slowly build to what they had become.
Their essence could never substitute for their experiences and the years they lived on earth , in very much accordance to even the core idea of good omens.
I do think it's bitter sweet some kind of version of them got a happy ending. But Asa never did hoard books for centuries and Anthony probably never had a Bentley and screamed at his plants.
They will never be a substitute for the angel and demon that was always beside humanity and sacrificed themselves for it. And it is important we see it like that instead of this soul thingy people keep bringing up.
Coz that's just insulting to their memories.
The choice they made were in character, but don't try to soften it by saying they are the same as their human substitutes. That is just plain hurtful.
