the work is mysterious and important

My favorite part of Severance is how it weaponized the suspension of disbelief. A big aspect of allegorical speculative fiction is the woo factor. You, as the audience, are trained to excuse a certain amount of ridiculous science if it fits the themes. You don’t have to understand how the tech works, you take the jargon at face value. But half the point of Severance is that Lumon is a cult. So the audience has to question all their technology—is their four humors-esque categorization system meant to be legit within the universe or is it total nonsense and the brain chips and personality sectioning work for some other reason. Are we meant to believe that Woe is a valid categorizational tool? How much of their in-universe medical technology is scientifically sound and how much is are we supposed to think is chicanery and snake oil? The Eagans draw on the rich visual language of both historical and modern American quackery (dieting, devices to measure nebulous energies, crit sessions) but mix it with elements of retro and modern sci-fi. Because it’s in a story where the audience is primed to accept a bit of pseudoscience it takes a while to double back and question their scientific bonafides.
