“Tea, please.” Luna tried not to let the compliment go straight to her head like champagne bubbles, but it didn’t quite work. As the cook went off to prepare their order, she sent a somewhat shy smile across to Crowe. “So,” she murmured, resting her chin on her hand, “do you talk to all of your charges like that, or am I special?” She kept her voice low, just enough for Crowe to hear.
Crowe turned to her, her arm propped at the elbow so that her head could fall to rest on it, and she laughed. “You’re special. Really. I didn’t know what to expect when I was sent to rescue you, but consider me pleasantly surprised, Lulu.”
“Truly? I admit that I had no idea what to expect, either. I only received word a day ahead of time, that I would be met by someone His M--our friend trusted.” She took a sip of the tea that appeared in front of her, relishing the floral taste. “I admit that you exceed my expectations. I feared I might be led around by some big brute of a man with more muscles than compassion.” She shrugged. “I would not complain if that were the case, of course--a rescue is a rescue, after all--but I am much happier with my current situation.”
Where was this confidence and flirtatiousness coming from? Luna almost couldn’t believe herself. She should be thinking ahead to the journey that awaited her. For the astrals’ sake, she was going to meet her betrothed!
And yet, she heard herself saying aloud, “I am already looking forward to seeing where the road takes us, Crowe.”
