Harry’s concern for Ginny during the Chamber of Secrets ordeal

It’s so adorable that I’m getting a cavity.

First of all, Harry’s sole focus in on Ginny from the moment he walks in the room.

He literally begs her not to be dead, something we never see him do with anyone else. 

“Ginny!” Harry muttered, sprinting to her and dropping to his knees. “Ginny — don’t be dead — please don’t be dead —” He flung his wand aside, grabbed Ginny’s shoulders, and turned her over. Her face was white as marble, and as cold, yet her eyes were closed, so she wasn’t Petrified. But then she must be…

“Ginny, please wake up,” Harry muttered desperately, shaking her. Ginny’s head lolled hopelessly from side to side.

Notice that he’s so distracted by Ginny that he even flings his wand to one side. And Tom/Harry exchange several lines of dialogue before Harry realizes that Tom isn’t there to help and gives Tom his full attention.

For a second, Harry wondered how it [the diary] had got there — but there were more pressing matters to deal with. 

“You’ve got to help me, Tom,” Harry said, raising Ginny’s head again. “We’ve got to get her out of here. There’s a basilisk… I don’t know where it is, but it could be along any moment… Please, help me.”

When Tom starts talking about Ginny writing in the diary, “Harry’s fists were clenched, the nails digging deep into his palms.” A few lines later, Harry’s having trouble keeping his voice steady because “anger was coursing through him.”

But look what happens when Ginny wakes up:

Then came a faint moan from the end of the Chamber. Ginny was stirring. As Harry hurried toward her, she sat up.  […] She drew a great, shuddering gasp and tears began to pour down her face.

“It’s all right,” said Harry, holding up the diary, and showing Ginny the fang hole, “Riddle’s finished. Look! Him and the basilisk. C'mon, Ginny, let’s get out of here —”

“I’m going to be expelled!” Ginny wept as Harry helped her awkwardly to her feet. “I’ve looked forward to coming to Hogwarts ever since B-Bill came and n-now I’ll have to leave and — w-what’ll Mum and Dad say?”

[…]

“I’ll explain when we get out of here,” said Harry [to Ron] with a sideways glance at Ginny, who was crying harder than ever.

“But —”

“Later,” Harry said shortly. He didn’t think it was a good idea to tell Ron yet who’d been opening the Chamber, not in front of Ginny, anyway. “Where’s Lockhart?”

“Fawkes,” said Harry, “isn’t an ordinary bird.” He turned quickly to the others. “We’ve got to hold on to each other. Ginny, grab Ron’s hand. Professor Lockhart —”

“He means you,” said Ron sharply to Lockhart.

“You hold Ginny’s other hand —”

So Harry, his voice now growing hoarse from all this talking, told them about Fawkes’s timely arrival and about the Sorting Hat giving him the sword. But then he faltered. He had so far avoided mentioning Riddle’s diary — or Ginny. She was standing with her head against Mrs. Weasley’s shoulder, and tears were still coursing silently down her cheeks. What if they expelled her? Harry thought in panic. Riddle’s diary didn’t work anymore… How could they prove it had been he who’d made her do it all?

Instinctively, Harry looked at Dumbledore, who smiled faintly, the firelight glancing off his half-moon spectacles.

“What interests me most,” said Dumbledore gently, “is how Lord Voldemort managed to enchant Ginny, when my sources tell me he is currently in hiding in the forests of Albania.”

Relief — warm, sweeping, glorious relief – swept over Harry.

It’s not that Harry’s doing an amazing job comforting Ginny. It’s that he’s paying attention. He’s not thinking about the basilisk or Tom, it’s about Ginny.

When Ginny wakes up he rushes over despite the fact that his head is still spinning. He helps her to the entrance and avoids giving details because she’s upset. He instructs Ginny to grab Ron’s hand rather than telling Ron to grab Ginny’s hand. And when he tells Dumbledore the story, he tries his best to leave Ginny out of it and “panics” at the idea that she would be expelled.

what she says: i’m fine.

what she means: how dare the Harry Potter movies misrepresent both Ron and Ginny Weasley’s characters so badly. Book!Ron is such a support to Harry and an indispensable character who is chronically under-appreciated but consistently rises to the occasion to help his best friends defeat the most evil wizard to wield power since Grindelwald. Movie!Ron is relegated to cheap humor and annoying side plots with a totally out-of-nowhere romance with Hermione. Book!Ron and Hermione have a strong relationship built on years of trust and mutual attraction, but the movie just throws it at you expecting you to understand the completely underrepresented buildup. Book!Ginny is a boss bitch: she kills at Quidditch and understands Harry’s pain and anger at having Voldemort in his brain because she LITeraLLY was possessed by Voldemort herself and she is really the only one who could empathize with what he goes through. Sure, she has a crush on him, but she isn’t an awkward little mute with no personality apart from adoring Harry from afar. She is feisty and smart and a powerful witch, but the movies mostly just show her pining after him and don’t show how she lives her own life. How dare they do that to her. Oh and don’t get me started on how the movie had HER ASKING WHO VIKTOR freakINFGSD KRUM IS??! SHE KNOWS who he his, she’s a giant Quidditch nerd. Who do yOU think you’re fooling

She shook her head, not falling for his act even for a moment. Almost unconsciously, he reached up to gently brush her bangs from her cheek and continued, “I’m surprised we even made it to the library, actually.”

“No thanks to you. You realize I’ll blame you if I fail my OWLs?”
