There are a couple of equations that have a 4th power in them, which is either amazing or terrifying depending on if you’re a scientist or an engineer.  An example I deal with irl is that the thermal energy radiated outwards from a hot object is proportional to the fourth power of the temperature.  So, an object that is twice the temperature will radiate sixteen times the heat (2^4 = 16).

Think about a piece of hot metal, like the electric heater on a stovetop. Hold your hand a few inches away, and you will feel much more radiant heat as it starts to warm up.  That might be a fun science fact, but it becomes a real design challenge when I’m trying to make stuff work at crazy high temperatures. 

Actually, one of the key concepts in fusion research is another fourth-power law:  The available energy output in a fusion reactor increases to the fourth power of the magnetic coils’ field strength.  If you double the strength of your magnets, you get 16 times the fusion power!  This is why research into high-field superconducting magnets is so important!
